Nigel Adkins should not get all the blame, says Southampton captain Adam Lallana

SAINTS captain Adam Lallana insists Nigel Adkins shouldn’t shoulder all the blame for the club’s poor start to the season.
Saturday’s demoralising 4-1 defeat at Upton Park left yet more questions hanging in the air about the manager’s future at St Mary’s.
With just four points from eight games, and having conceded a Premier League-worst 24 goals, Saints are now entrenched back in the relegation zone.
That has generated further speculation that chairman Nicola Cortese could be about to give Adkins the boot.
Lallana was quizzed as to whether he thought the pressure the manager was coming under was unfair.
He said: “We’re all under pressure. We’re under pressure to get results, so is the manager.
“You can’t just look in his direction when we get a couple of bad results.
“We’re the players that are out there, so we’ve got to take responsibility.”
One player unable to take as much responsibility as he would have hoped on Saturday was Rickie Lambert.
The club’s top scorer was surprisingly dropped at the weekend, only making it onto the pitch in the 64th minute, with Saints 2-1 down.
Lallana was asked whether the decision – one that Adkins has come under fire for – had surprised him.

“Listen, Rickie’s one of the biggest reasons we’re here in the Premier League, on the back of his goals,” he said.
“I honestly can’t comment. It’s not my decision who plays, or whether he plays.
“I just get on with my job, as Rickie did when he came on the pitch.
“He’s a professional guy, he’s a top man, and it’s been a pleasure playing with him and it will continue to be a pleasure playing with him throughout my career.
“I’ve learnt a lot off him, and I look up to him massively.”
Lallana was at a loss to explain why Saints had coped so comfortably in the first half at Upton Park, yet crumbled so spectacularly once again in the second.
“Honestly, I don’t know,” he admitted.
“If I knew the answer I’d tell you.
“But lack of concentration comes to mind, obviously three minutes into the second half and two goals down you just can’t do it at this level away from home.
“You give yourself such a steep hill to climb.
“We’ve got to get together on the training pitch and stamp out these errors as a team.”
The midfielder, who revealed that his first Premier League goal meant nothing to him given the result, said the entire team must take responsibility for the problems at the back.
“It’s not just your back four and keeper,” he said. “Listen, you defend from the front.
“We’ve been working on that on the training pitch and we’ve just got to work harder. It’s not just individuals, it’s as a team.
“You defend from the front, and that means from Jay Rodriguez or Rickie Lambert all the way back to the goalkeeper.”

Make no mistake, staying in this league will be difficult, but guys we knew this well before the season started and we'll know this as we continue our campaign.
Adkins has done a wonderous job for us as has Liebher and Cortese. We owe them a lot, from League One to the Premier league in a short period of time will produce these kind of results for us, a steep learning curve for the team and the manager, we must stick with them as fans of the club and hope we can produce the results which I personally know we can! COYR!!

I sympathise with those that say a defensive coach would be an option.
Arsenal were a sensational attacking team last season, but let in too many goals to win anything. In the close season they engaged an ex-centre half of theirs' , Teve Bould to act as defensive coach. If it's good enough for Arsene Wenger, Nigel Adkins shouldn't be too worried.
Another point I would like to make is about the captaincy. I think it was a mistake to make Adam the captain. He should be concentrating on what he does best, getting in among opposition defenders.
Alan Pardew, didn't like the idea of Kelvin Davis being captain and soon appointed Hammond. In all my experience of playing and watchig football, the bt captains were either midfielders or defenders. They se the whole game around them. I would like to see Steve davis as captain. Lastly, leave Adkins alone. Stability is most important. There is still time to turn this around.

Anyway, surely NA knew full well where we needed to strengthen? But we need the right people who will fit in with this squad and the 'vision' of the 'Southampton Way' (don't get cynical now!). Bear in mind that Saints have a certain 'profile' of player that we tend to go for: young, ambitious, already good but with bags of potential. That type of defensive player might have been difficult to come by in the summer. We seemingly lost out on left-back Alexander Buttner at the 11th hour. Yes, we now have Nat Clyne and Maya Yoshida (the latter especially still to settle in, fair to say). And maybe at least one other centre-half was sought but fell through - we don't know. (Anyone know why Aaron Martin has been missing lately at Crystal Palace, by the way?!). You can be sure NA, the coaching staff and the players will work extremely hard to get things right. They need our support in the meantime.
Let's just all hold our nerve and we'll get through this tricky spell!

The defence needs seriously sorting. West Ham waltzed through unchallenged on Saturday and the back four were emabarrassing. Yoshida looks awful and Jose & Jos are under extreme pressure. I would put Seaborne back in but premiership experience at the back during the window will be essential if we are to have any chance of staying up.

I'm astonished some people have suggested Dalglish (that great defensive minded Manager) and Kevin Keegan (yet another) as Dir of football (I loved you Kev on the pitch).
If we lose the next 5 games, then fair enough question NAs tactical ability, but we will learn - the hard way as usual.

His quote on Saturday was ''we identified we needed to strengthen in defence in the summer'' that didn't happen, instead we spent millions on a player and play him out of position, we bought one unknown centre back and play him at left back, we loan out a promising youngster who plays at centre back and we are left with a shocking defence to start our first EPL campaign in years.
Everyone could see Fonte was struggling last season, Jos played well but made to many individual errors, Fox can cross a ball but can't defend for squawt, the only back four player to take any this term is Clyne, this is why we have a shocking goals against record, add that to using 3 different goalies in 8 games it doesn't bode well for the rest of the season.
You cannot say the chairman has failed to support the manager hence the Gaston, J Rod purchases plus Myuka and Steven Davis (quality midfielder) so where does the blame lay, for me it is fairly and squarely at Nigel's door.
Do I want Nigel Adkins gone? ask me at 10 to 5 on Sunday

What is fact is that we have a young, talented manager that we should keep and let develop himself and this team.
I don't want to see the instability and managerial merry go round that has plagued our great club in recent years; history shows it does nothing to guarantee improvement.
The facts are that we are shipping too many goals, our defenders, to a man, are not performing; they hold the key to getting results not managerial change.
I'm bored by the impatience of the many supposed fans on this site and frustrated by their lack of football knowledge, so much so that I'm going to refrain from reading any further comments re Saints until our results improve (they undoubtedly will) which will probably mean that the doubting, reactionary, clueless and drivel spouting morons may change their depressing tune.

...and 68% (of fans polled) still want to keep Nigel despite the loaded question, -I want to keep Nigel but didn't vote because of this silly question.
...and GDPrado (and BSharp) has contributed more to Saints than JRodiguez so far-stats who'd have 'em?
I do trust and believe that NA WILL turn this bus around, and remember that last season (and even the one before that) WE couldn't afford to be without our best players for most of the games...that's silly...and I believe stats will bear that out too...!
So Saints NA/NC defend as a team, recognise the faults and back en route please. Thank you

Worried though that he thinks possession is so important. Possession without an end product (i.e. work the goalkeeper.) is a waste of time.
Still think we should get someone to help the defence like Tony Adams.

We were the better team for the 1st 45, in fact at 2 - 0 down I expected us still to rescue a point, but our defence and probably the rest of the team are low on confidence the tough start we have had hasn't helped at all and we're looking shell shocked, you can question leaving Ricky on the bench but for the 1st 45 mins we were fine without him, had we not given away 2 silly goals I could see him comming on at 60 mins and us pushing for a winner, we'd all be saying well done nige! Unfortunately his master plan went out the window when we conceded 2 terrible goals, how did that free kick go in! Then the pass to maya put maya in a fix and he didn't help himself, he should have made it his and if needed put it into touch, can't afford to take risks at the back, I like to pass out from the back but sometimes you just have to get rid! Anyway as I see it were now 2 goals adrift but still in the game we get one back and could well have got somthing out of the game but then gave away a penalty! Some times were to lack lister sometimes were to aggressive, it was at this point I felt we could no longer get anything from the game, 3 costly errors, they lie firmly on the players shoulders and had nothing to do with formation or substitutions, the lads need to wise up fast, the back line need to stop committing suicide someone in that back line needs to step up and take control Once this happens and nerves settle we'll be fine, we need to attack the balls into our box not try and just pull there players back, it might work in the championship but not in the premier league when that ball came in some one should have got there head on it and sent it back the way it came, or at the least out for a corner. Start doing these things and I feel we will pick up more points, Ramirez returning will help us keep the ball, and play the forwards in, to often we end up playing back to the keeper and forcing him to kick long under pressure, it's no wonder the keeper and back line are nervous, they need to stop putting each other under pressure if in doubt put your laces through it and get rid! Midfield need to be in positions to recieve a simple pass from the back so there not always forced to go back to the keeper
That's my observations, I dont feel we need a new manager, I still think Nigel is the right man, he says in his interview he don't know how to remedy us conversing like we have or somthing to that effect, and I can see why, it's not a tactical thing it's mostly a mental thing in my opinion and until the players can get passed it all nige can do is keep training and going over his kpi's, and all we can do as fans is cheer them on and inspire some confidence in them

Adkins must be given time. It's far too soon to be considering a replacement.

Now at in terms of current form, beating spurs seems unlikely. With Adkins loosing his job. I don't want that to happen, he's done this club wonders, we've played attractive and successful football, we need to play to strengths and stick together. Breaking apart the manager and players would be disasterous for the club.
For example look at Coyle and Kean, they kept their jobs despite relegation and obviously poor form in the Championship cost them. I DO NOT want Southampton to become a short term job for managers, we need to retain some kind of consistency and team work and as fans we need to support the players and manager.

Saints have always been in finacial trouble due to constant overspending on "stars" according to the majority of local papers from the last two seasons.
We have been poor at the start of the season. Having very little show from difficult fixtures games like West Ham, Fulham and Wigan have suddently become must win games. We didnt get Butner in and we got rid of a relativly good left back
Everyone slated Dan Harding, but who on earth would you rather have Yoshida at full back?
Our problems start on the wings, come through the full backs and onto the center halves, its not just Jos and Fonte that are the problem, its just where it ends up.

Nigel says he is determined to keep to an attractive passing game and praise be for such a belief. Great for the fans BUT at some point Saints have got to shut the door. It's obvious that if you keep a clean sheet then you only have to score one goal.
May not be so attractive, but gets 3 points and will help to secure our real objective this year - 17th place!!
