SAINTS might have an academy
with a great reputation,
but Cherries boss Kevin
Bond believes kids can just
as good a footballing education
on and off the field at
League One strugglers
Bournemouth.
The latest products of the club's fruitful
youth set-up both made impressive
debuts as Cherries recorded a memorable
2-1 win over League One highfliers
Tranmere yesterday at Dean
Court.
Lymington's Josh McQuoid, a midfielder,
and Sussex-based defender
Billy Franks both played their part in
the victory before they were replaced
by fellow youth teamers Matt Finlay
from Ringwood and Joe Partington
from Fareham.
Cherries boss Kevin Bond paid tribute
to the work of youth coach Joe
Roach and his department when he
said: "Joe and his staff have played a
major part in a number of players having
their debuts since I've been here
and that is a great credit to them.
"They do a fantastic job.
"With respect, all the good youngsters
trundle off up the road to
Southampton to what they perceive to
be a bigger and better club.

"But the education, both on and off
the field, they receive here is no better
than they get there.
"They have helped develop players
who might not have had a shout of getting
apprenticeships at other clubs."
Cherries were given a dream start
when Tranmere skipper Ian Goodison
put through his own net after just 33
seconds before Jo Kuffour doubled
their lead in the 34th minute.
Ex-Saints coach Bond, whose squad
was ravaged by injury and unavailability,
added: "In all my years in football,
I don't think I've had many more
wins that were more rewarding or, in
some ways, more surprising.
"It was nothing short of an heroic
performance by the lads.
Asked about McQuoid and Franks's
debuts, Bond said: "They were excellent,
probably better than they could
have ever expected, I would imagine.
"They stood up to a difficult situation
and both came out of the game with an
awful lot of credit."
Victory saw Cherries reduce the gap
between them and safety to 12 points.
However, asked if a miracle could be
on the cards, Bond replied: "It's probably
unlikely.
"Once we went into administration,
we knew it was really an impossible
task.
"But to the players' credit, I don't
think anyone watching today would
have thought we had been docked
points and been adversely affected by
what has gone on because the lads
were tremendous."

I think that, on the small gates that Bournemouth attract, he is doing great, and if they had not gone into administration, would have survived in Div 1.
With the team playing as a team, they may yet prove the pundits wrong.

Never the less I will re-new my season ticket as I couldn`t really care which league they are playing in, see when I first watched them they were lower than they are now. Even surviving the drop this year will leave the club in the brown stuff, without a buyer we will have to take a ten point deduction early next term. I am tipping Barnsley for the drop.

[/quote] I have two young sons and I am a saints supporter (Had four saeason tickets that I gave up two years ago, as enjoyed seeing my kids play on a Sunday, more than what was being served up on the pitch and for how much it was costing me). I actually think that sailor Sams contributions to the echo Saints comments are quite valid and level. My youngest son was training with Saints academy, was offered to go to Bournemouth,Reading and Pompey, he chose Pompey. The problem we have at Southampton FC is complacency, no one has a God given right to be somewhere, you earn that. We have have agreed (Mum and dad) to put our kids through Pompeys academy, although have to say that Bournemouth was a strong candidate, this is over Saints (My club). There is a negativity that goes right through Saints FC at the moment, from the fans, stewards, players and right up to the management. Pompey has only just received academy status and their coaches are enthusiastic, great with the kids and at the end of the day my kid actually enjoys his football with Pompey, something he started to not do with Saints. It's called a feel good factor. Saimts have fantastic facilities coaches etc. I think there are new players of tomorrow at many clubs in the Uk and in all divisions. I hope that Bournemouth continues to do the good work it has been doing so far and that Saints pull off some performances that all the fans need and deserve. Says a lot when we see that two of our players are out on bail at the moment, considering our position was not so great when they went out partying in the first place! Prhaps it's the whole structure of UK football that's at fault (Ashley Cole/refs etc)

My ideal would be to see ALL the Hampshire clubs (Bournemouth is still an Honourary Hampshire Club) in the top flight but, other than Pompey, the only team 'on the up' at present is Aldershot, and good luck to them as well!

[/quote] No Sam, for my own reasons I did not go to that meeting, but I'm not going through all that again!! I'm too young to remember the floating bridge...
Good post by Paul TS, but it did make me sad that he feels his children are better off at the Pompey Academy. It shows Saints are in a sorry state of affairs at the moment. If our youth talent dries up then I fear more doom and gloom!!

A lack of team\'s competence, and customers that pay good money to watch performances that bear no comparison to what they saw a few years back!
I am not going to argue with that you are spot on. Never the less I will re-new my season ticket as I couldn`t really care which league they are playing in, see when I first watched them they were lower than they are now. Even surviving the drop this year will leave the club in the brown stuff, without a buyer we will have to take a ten point deduction early next term. I am tipping Barnsley for the drop.
I agree, I would support Saints even if they were in the conference, it makes no difference to me whatsoever. I am a SUPPORTER not a customer. If I were merely a customer I would have stopped going long ago as it is terrible value for money! A bit like watching Pompey at home eh Sam!?!
So Legend, you were one of the 'Supporters' who attended the much publicised meeting with the board of directors? Living in Woolston, you would not have had far to travel, even though the Floating Bridge is now just a memory! I can identify with what you say, because it was tough being a Pompey supporter when we went down to Division 4, but we survived! An interesting piece by Paul TS of Swanwick! He is confirming, something that I have been saying on these pages for months! Trouble filters downwards, not upwards! Trouble in the board room, rubs off on the management, who pass it on the the team and it goes on down the chain until it has a detrimental effect on the youth team! Same in the Navy. A good, competent, fair Captain, influenced the officers and crew. It was not how an Able Seaman performed! My ideal would be to see ALL the Hampshire clubs (Bournemouth is still an Honourary Hampshire Club) in the top flight but, other than Pompey, the only team 'on the up' at present is Aldershot, and good luck to them as well!
No Sam, for my own reasons I did not go to that meeting, but I'm not going through all that again!! I'm too young to remember the floating bridge...
Good post by Paul TS, but it did make me sad that he feels his children are better off at the Pompey Academy. It shows Saints are in a sorry state of affairs at the moment. If our youth talent dries up then I fear more doom and gloom!!
Paul TS made some interesting points. My view about youth football at the local professional clubs is that they are all too full of their own importance and put too much pressure on youngsters way too soon. The academy coaches are all under pressure themselves with cash strapped clubs looking at ways of cutting costs. A lot of young players are over-coached. This manifests itself in different ways. Although he isn't at a local club anymore Theo Walcott is a prime example. Since he went to Arsenal his natural game (what made him stand out from others) has been lost to some degree. Wenger made a very revealing comment not long after Theo joined Arsenal. He said soemthing like "It's not all about speed." Which suggests to me (along with Walcott's loss of form) that the coaches were concentrating on perceived weaknesses in his game and perhaps getting him to change the way he played. If not handled correctly this can come across in a very negative way to a young player and lead to a massive loss in confidence. I agree with Paul TS, a young player has to find somewhere where he is happy. Happiness comes first, development second. Not every club will suit all players but the fact that a particular player doesn't get on at a club doesn't make either the club or the player bad. My lad has been coached privately by Matty Holmes for years and now he is a little older he is coached at the Terry Wateridge Soccer Academy where he is very happy. I wouldn't send him to one of the clubs because of the pressure. I think it can have a very negative effect on some young players. I watched one Pompey academy side a couple of years back.
