Saints have been dealt a major blow ahead of Sunday's final day clash with Sheffield United with the news they will be without centre half Chris Lucketti.

The 36-year-old defender has taken the decision that he doesn't want to be selected to face his parent club in a game which could see Saints relegated or the Blades reach the play-offs.

Saints boss Nigel Pearson confirmed the club have tried to resolve the situation but without success and now plan for the match without him.

"It was a difficult situation and we've tried very hard to resolve it.

"We're not in a position to make him a permanent deal at this moment in time which is a shame and that would have been the best solution and one that we all wanted.

"It's a difficult situation at this moment in time."

Can't blame Lucketti for doing this. I think one of the above comments is grossly unfair. He is a good pro, he's not on the scrapheep and let us not forget the Blades have been paying him for 90% of the season not 10%.

Either way he would be perceived as having devided loyalties.

He has a blinder, then returns to the Blades then how will that make sense, he may have done his own employers harm. He has a stinker and the Saints are going to accuse him of something dodgy.

The only way around this would be for Saint to agree to buy him regardless then at least he knows where his loyalties are. If they are not prepared to do this, then this is the only option.

That's the problem when you take players on loan instead of buying them.
Their loyalty is with their parent club.
With Sheffield United still in with a shout of the playoffs, he would not do his future there much good if he stopped them making it!

Let’s be realistic too. Mr Lucketti has done a good job, buts he's not a super star, which is likely to keep us up. If we stay in this league then be honest we need some better defenders, not convinced he would be the best choice. If we go down the club will need to bring on more home grown starlets just to keep the wage bill down. Powell will be up for this game like all the players should be that cross that white line. If Lucketti doesn't feel the want for out brand of red and white, then he shouldn't be picked, no choice. Keep the faith people 29,000+ fans roaring on 11 focused players who want to do their job for the Saints and the win is ours. Save a prayer for the other red and white team playing at the same time, we need them to win also.

Give Ollie Lancashire a go - if he is half as keen to show what he can do as Adam Lallana did at WBA. Darren Powell has had his chances (when fit). I agree with whizzpop, I would rather see Wayne Thomas at the back with Perry.

This is a big shame but no one should blame him for it. I would get Thomas in and maybe play Lancaster later on.

The reason I wouldn't start with Olie Lancaster is I don't believe defenders make as big impact as an unknown quantity as midfielders or strikers do as if they make one mistake it could mean a goal but if a striker makes a mistke it's likely only to be a missed opportunity.

I belive we can still win, come you SAINTS!

Didn't think I'd say this but I wish we could have kepy Burley - not the best man for the job but at least he'd taken us to midtable mediocrity.

We are fukin usless this seaon - just hope we can scrape avoiding relegation. Mind you with Lowe coming back soon the future don't look to good either does it?

Your theory, pompey have replaced one of the top Premiership players who was scoring for fun, with a loan player who could not even get into a team that was third from bottom of the Premiership not so long ago.
Now thats really logical,not.
Defoe is not fit to lace Banjanis boots,he is an average player that no-one else wanted, thats why he went to pompey.
He turned pompey down about three times, knew no-one wanted him and had no choice in the end.
The certain club that you refer to achieved nearly three decades of top flight football producing and selling their talent and replacing them with "lesser quality"
Still the lesser quality players kept THE BIGGEST FOOTBALL CLUB ON THE SOUTH COAST, playing ATTRACTIVE football above your lot for nearly half a century.
Infact in that period of time pompey have only PRODUCED 1 decent player, and he was from Southampton.
When your money runs out, which by all accounts will be pretty soon, pompey will for another half a century be a poor second behind Southampton, once again.

Hi Bitter Andy!
Since your clubs decline, it is understandable that you should be out of touch with top class players in the Premier League, of which Portsmouth is a member.
This is proved by the fact that you cannot even spell the name of the player that Defoe replaced!
You also appear unaware that Defoe's loan to Pompey was a technicality, lasted less than 24 hours, and he is now a 'signed, sealed and delivered' Pompey player. Don't believe me? See what shirt he is wearing next season, then get back to me on here!
So the team now sweating on saving their Championship membership this weekend were above Pompey for 'nearly half a century'!!!!! Stretching the truth a bit aren't you!
Pompey were doing back to back Div1 Champions while you were in Div3 (S), so what! That's history! Where are our respective clubs now?
That's what counts!
Darren Anderton was just one!
Kit Symons, and Gary O'Neill, Darryl Powell and Andy Awford spring to mind.
The thing is, they also played for Pompey!
The ones you produced were sold on, in a vain attempt to balance the books, and it looks as if you are as successful at that as your team is on the pitch!
So, according to you, the money is running out at Portsmouth!
Let's see what happens in the summer, when the transfer window is open again!
I can understand you being Green With Envy!
It must be tough being football's poor relations on the South Coast!
Bournemouth have put up a better fight than your lot!

All played for Pompey for a number of seaso

Of course Sailor, and we must luckettis loyalties here(I'm sure you got that, unlike that unsavoury person who calls himself, or herself Crew 657, and apparently lives with New Forest ponies).
