Surman knows how Saints fans are feeling
Andrew Surman
Andrew Surman

Andrew Surman has said he knows exactly what fans will be going through during tomorrow's survival battle with Sheffield United.

A lifelong Saints fan, the 21-year-old has sat in the stands for a number of relegation battles and great escapes.

He was at The Dell in 1996 for a dramatic last day of the Premiership, when a 0-0 draw at home to Wimbledon, coupled with results elsewhere, kept Saints up and sent Alan Ball's Manchester City down instead on goal difference.

Now it will be Surman's turn to take to the field for what he describes as "one of the biggest games in the club's history."

"I definitely know what they're going through," he said of the Saints supporters.

"I remember watching the game against Wimbledon and all the fans jumping up because the other results were going for us.

"It's nerve-wracking and I can imagine it's harder to watch it than to actually play in it."

Surman said it is difficult to understate the importance of tomorrow's match to the club.

"It's a massive game, it's one of the biggest in the club's history," he said.

"We're fully confident we can go and win.

"We're at home, in front of our own fans, it's a sell out and it will be a great atmosphere.

"It was disappointing to go down from the Premiership to the Championship, but to even think that we might end up getting relegated to League One is unthinkable.

"I'm trying not to think about that too much, but it would be absolutely devastating if that happened."

Which team will turn up though? The one that beat Bristol City so convincingly, or the one that laboured against Burnley, a team with nothing to play for?

Can't help feeling that the goal difference will bite us on the bum.....

Once again we degenerate into slagging each other off. Not one post about the story this thread relates to. Personally I hope us and Bournemouth stay up and Pompey win the cup. It would be good for the south to show that football exists outside London and the North. Plus I have it on good authority that tomorrow is Surmans last game in a Saints shirt.

Pitch invasion if we stay up?

Is Beattie going to be watching the match at SMS? What will his reaction be to the game?

COYR!

why does anyone bother replying to that Pompey fool. All that matters is that we win tomorrow. A full house will raise our lad's game sorry I can't be there but I have great faith. Good luck Saints.

I work with a few pompey lads who hope we say up but they did say that large numbers of pompey fans had tickets to go to SMS tomorrow...surely the stewards need to stop them coming in

Also one of them thinks he knows that imbecile crew 123

I hope you stay up, ideally so we can have derbys again one day. yes I know of a few of our fans going to SMS on sunday...personaly I think its wrong as our fans should focus on our club not yours.

Nice to hear a sensible statement from obviously a football supporter, not like Dick Head Crew, who if he has the name Andy second name must be Pandy.

Rockets go up!
You, like your team, are a damp squib!
You promise a lot, and fizzle out!
A year ago you were in the play-offs!
What a difference a year makes!
If calling supporters of
PORTSMOUTH FC, THE ONLY PREMIER LEAGUE TEAM ON THE SOUTH COAST AND FINALISTS IN THIS YEAR'S FA CUP
silly names makes you feel better, then go ahead!
We all know that you are just jealous of your neighbour's success!
RED and WHITE?
More like GREEN WITH ENVY!

PS: no portscum fan would live in the forest. Please!!!!!!!

Well done saints. You have a good following up here, and these filthy skates are the embarrassment of your premiership. I'm a photographer for The Record, and believe me, when on VERY rare moments that we have to travel down to that hole in Fratton, we draw lots and the loser goes. The only consolation is we stay in Southampton and meet up with the locals who are known throughout Britain as perfect fans.

Well done again, and you'll be in the Premiership next year with the new, HONEST, NOT GANGSTER MONEY.
