Nigel Pearson on the traditional lap of honour at the end of yesterday's game
Nigel Pearson believes Saints must start planning for the future rather than get too carried away with celebrating their final day survival.
The Saints boss was typically down to earth and matter of fact with his views just moments after leaving the pitch at St Mary's having been surrounded by well wishers after he guided the team to Championship safety.
For Pearson, who was brought in back in February, keeping Saints up is a major achievement as it was his mission from day one - even though the club were six points above the drop zone when he arrived.
But he acknowledges that for the club as a whole, escaping relegation from the Championship on the final day is not something that should be treated as particularly terrific.
To avoid that happening again, Pearson believes the club need to start their planning soon.
He said: "All in all I'm delighted but I'm not going to kid myself because it's a situation we'd rather not be in as a club.
advertisement
"If you'd have looked the start of the year you wouldn't have said it would be an achievement to stay up.
"That needs to be addressed because it is now.
"When the dust settles after the game we have to look at how we move the club forward."

Thanks Nigel it has been a bit of a roller coaster ride but you brought us through.
I for one would love to see you in charge next season. Once again THANK YOU COYR

I keep thinking about what needs to be done:
1. Are the players we have good enough to compete better next season? Clearly they have underachieved this season.
2. What money do we have to play with? I expect not a lot which would mean that we would have to sell in order ot bring new faces in. We must keep hold of our captain so the only obvious candidates are the likes of Skacel, Rasiak and maybe BWP.
3. Who can step up from the youth ranks? I think it's a bit too much to expect another Le Tissier, Walcott of Baile but one can hope!
In reality, I think we will need a mixture of all 3 to be more competetive next season.
I'd love to think we will sign Richard Wright but I can't see it personally. In any case, would he really be such a good singing (think about Saganowski's perfomances after we signed him).
Unfortunately I cannot attend home games these days but I will be buying a new Saints shirt to give the club some much needed cash. Hopefully it will get worn more than the last one!

Planning for the future is a bit tricky just at the moment with Lowe-life and his divisive gang doing their best to screw things up.
Pearson deserves a contract and good backing to get next season off to the best possible start but I fear that the cancer will be back to threaten Saints' health.

Pearsons a good defensive coach and yes he appears to say and do all the right things but if he trully was a good manager we wouldnt have had to wait until yesterday for survival!
I for one am hoping Lowes return signals the return of Hoddle and a true chance of investment and a return to the premiership as with Pearson i dont thhink thats achievable!
All I can say is thanks for the stop gap Nigel and good luck for the future.

He brought the club to its knees with his managerial changes and a policy of selling every goo player we had.
The fact is the club was and is undercapitalized and the move to St Marys should not have been made without a proper business plan to service the increased debt.
Lowe's return is not a foregone conclusion and I hope Crouch does his best to persuade the other 54 percent of voters that Lowe's return would be a backward step.

I'm not sure thats in the clubs best interest.
Nigel Pearson has made good loan signings and started giving the team some cahones.
The best thing Mr Lowe can do is show the fans he has learnt for previous mistakes and start backing the manager and pony up the dough.
Nigel Pearsons Red and White Army.

Wondered when Hoddle would come up - the complete opposite of Pearson who merits a chance. Agree about defence - Pericard was Pearson's one error of judgement but he still merits a chance. BTW - how effective has Hoddle been in his last two managerial positions? I think he's a 'has been' now as a manager.

We have reached rock bottom and now perceive yesterday as a great achievment and NP as great manager for getting us a win at the last minute at the tailend of the championship. Let's not forget who we are! We are a great and a big club and this time next year we will be looking forward to premiership football. It won't be with NP though, the bad days are now coming to an end. Thanks Nigel you did a great job for at this dark moment for Saints and wish you every success in the future. Your CV now looks great and you have 1000's of new friends at Southampton.

Keeping hold of Pearson is essential. He never had a chance of stamping his authority on a team that had by and large given up after Burley walked out. Look at the signings of Wright, Perry and Lucketti- immense.
Time to clear out the likes of Idiakez, Viafara, BWP, Saganowski, Ostlund, Powell, J Wright, Licka and Rasiak & Skacel.
We need players who can cope with the pace and power of the Championship, not fancy dans.
Allow Lallana, Lancashire, and Gillett to step up and build a team around Davies, Safri and John as a spine.

What a joke, all these people saying goodbye to Nigel! We need him to stay.
Here are some reasons to keep Pearson:
1. We need genuine and committed football men like Nigel around, because Rupert is none of these things. When he does take over (i am just about resigned to this) I hope he finds the investor that can save the club quickly.
2. We dont have the money to pay the likes of Hoddle, Alladyce etc.
3. Take a look over our results, I think the only dissapointing results are against Burnley and the fact we let-in 5 against Hull...but otherwise there are some spirited draws and great wins.
4. Coventry went with a proven manager and look where they finished. Not to mention Leicester.
5. Look at Pearson's (loan) signings, they have kept us up...it took a good decision not to recall Kelvin Davis etc etc.
6. Pearson will have a good idea who to get rid of and where we need to make some signings.
Please add anymore points why he should stay or some opposing reasons for him to go. I just I cant see that being the answer. We need to get used to being in this league til we get sorted. It's the 4th best supported league in the world. QPR have the richest owners in English football and traditionally big teams like Forest and Leeds (possibly) coming up will make it more interesting. Get over the premiership rush...it will happen at some point.

The sooner the fans players and staff realise we are no longer a big club and are now a "championship" club the quicker we might get back to the premiership. Since we went down we have always believed we are too good for this division. Pearson has chaanged their philosophy and with that done a great job in keeping us in the championship, to get rid of him now would be a massive error. I for one dont want Hoddle (lowe's no 1 "yes man") back.

I think the players and staff at St Mary's did a fantastic job yesterday. No one should forget that Nigel Pearson came into the Club knowing he had a relegation fight on his hands. His professionalism and talent is without question. He managed what George Burley failed to do. He motivated the players. He clearly understands the talent that exists at the club and is not afraid to use the younger players if they merit it. I would though like to see more of David Mcgoldrick.
I just hope that whoever takes charge of the club learns from the past mistakes and gives us the stability we need. How many managers have we had at Saints in the last 10 years?! It would be a mistake to lose Nigel Pearson. We need to build on what we have but that means some real investment not just a merry-go round of directors.
Well done Saints!
Karen Robinson

We could have slipped below Colchester or Scunny, not to mention get relegated 3rd from bottom.
Just to add to my six points on why he should in my opinion unquestionably stay...
7. He shows he could make decisions under pressure. For eg. to introduce Lallana in the last 2 games and Saga too. Plus bringing back Licka who did really well for about 5 games. Euell is rejuvinated, at times he lacked quality on goal, but the positions he was getting into were fantastic.

To the person who claims NP is a defensive manager, were you not at yesterday's game?! In a league like ours this season where form goes out the window, he did a great job to stop the rot.
When burley left, the players were unfit and demoralised. Burley was tactically clueless and made on average 3 team changes per game. No one knew if they were playing or what to do to get in the team. Then when they did, he played them out of position.
In walks NP and stability reigned. Players playing in their natural position, Euell returned to the form we knew he had but did not see under Burley enough (and who was magnificent yesterday) and discipline and fitness came about. NP did what was necessary to keep us up as our form was taking us to Div 1. He gave youngsters a chance too; just look at Lallana yesterday playing without fear in a high pressure game. NP now deserves to build the side and take us forward. Prem will not come overnight but NP can make us more competitive and push in a few years. A good Cup run next season and top 10 finish would be a good start.

I for one would be very happy if Pearson is in charge next season. He deserves the chance.
People on here saying Hoddle will come back must be kidding themselves. How are we ever going to afford him? WE have no money and Hoddle will still command a fee which is above what we can afford!

Lowe oversaw the most consistently successful period in saints history and balanced the books by refusing to give in to players excessive wage demands. He achieved considerable transfer income from those who elected to leave and also delivered a new stadium which others had failed to do for decades. His return is a foregone conclusion and most sensible Saints fans are mightily relieved. He's not going to win any popularity competitions and the Lowe haters will continue to hate him, but at least he will keep us out of administration, which is where the current bunch were heading. He's back, so it's important we all join to support the team rather than tearing ourselves apart about off the field issues.
All I am saying is that I remember walking away from the ground the day we went down and everyone saying "We're too big a club to go down" and to this day fans are still saying we are too good for the championship. The thing is the players seem to have believed this as well. Under Pearson they have become a hardworking team who accept their position and realise they've got to prove they are good enough to stay in the championship. Much improved from the start of the season when we looked like we couldnt care less against what the fans called those "lesser" teams. The last few weeks everyone has accepted that we were in big trouble and that has helped to keep us up. With the support of fans and the backing of the board Pearson can bring the stabilty, passion and work-rate that will be needed to get us out of the Championship.

I am afraid that this type of talk is what has got us into this position in the first place. The sooner the fans players and staff realise we are no longer a big club and are now a \\\\\\\"championship\\\\\\\" club the quicker we might get back to the premiership. Since we went down we have always believed we are too good for this division. I for one dont want Hoddle (lowe\\\\'s no 1 \\\\\\\"yes man\\\\\\\") back.
What that we\'re going to be looking forward to premiership football! I agree that Hoddle and Lowe are totally not what we want but we need directors, fans, investors, players that believe that our history and future is that of a big club and that we ARE going to be in the premiership. I want to thank NP for saving the Saints from humiliation. We now look more solid and if we can sign Wright and Vignal bring back Rasiak and get an attacking center midfield player then we have a half decent team. I have been to every home game and only missed 3 away games all season and can see a shape forming. People who say NP is defensive cannot have been watching saints this season. We were leaking goals for fun. He has stopped that. He is trying to build from the back which is what good Managers do. Yesterday who did we have on the bench? No one defender! Lets give NP a chance. I'm old enough to remember a certain Lawie Mc being relegated in his first season at saints and look where he took us. Hoddle? Don't make me laugh. We have been there and not again. Lets look forward, wheel and deal in the transfer market, sell Skacel, BWP, K.Davis, Idiakez, Thomas and bring in 3 or 4 on free's. COYR

Lets now build for next season and I hope Lowe gives NP all the money he needs to spend but only if we get the investment. Next season I hope we can get better quality such as fitness levels and also not sell our best players again, and hopefully bring in new ones

Do we keep Pearson? I am 70:30 in favour. He gave us some fight and made some good loan signings as well. However, we were 6 points above relegation zone before he arrived, but i guess you could argue we were in freefall.
In terms of players, get rid of Jermaine Wright, Kelvin Davis, Mario Licka, Rasiak, Skacel, Viafara. With Claus and Makin retiring that all would clear a lot of our wages.
Sign Richard Wright permanently - are Lucketti and Perry too old to sign full time? Also, seems ike Surman is immense at left back (as Le Tiss said yesterday, Surman hasn't got the pace to be an out-and-out left winger). Lets keep him in defence.
Finally, Lowe would do well to state from the outset that he is keeping Pearson, and then do what he can actually do well - look at the books and get us on an even keel. He will then find the investment (again, i think this is something he would actually be good at..!), make a load of cash for himself and leave us be with our owners/chairman, and the disposable cash for new players. Seriously, with a price tag of 20 mill, that is pocket money in today's climate.
Future is bright (er).......after yesterday

Nigel Pearson deserves huge credit and loyalty from the club, he clearly has plenty of support and admiration from the fans. If he is dispensed with just because Lowe has his favourites (more loony tunes a la Woodward) we will return to the years of uncertainty, inconsistency, U turns and nobody on the pitch caring for the club's best interests. We need stability to build and Pearson is the man, he now knows what needs to be done, let him do it.
Pearson inherited a weak position (appalling injury list esp amongst defenders; unmotivated players - many regularly played out of position, many lacking motivation), he then had two quality players (whatever their faults) taken away from him and then lost Andrew Davies for the important run in. Give this guy all the credit he is due for changing players attitudes, bringing in vital loan signings and providing real leadership from the touchlines. Thank you Nigel you will always have our thanks and huge sympathy if you are treated as badly as seems potentially likely.
One last word, thank you Stern John, your goals also saved us at a time when virtually nobody else ever looked likely to score you provided us with a lifeline. I know your languid style has been described by some as lazy but you came through for us. Thanks so much

On the pitch and at yesterday's final whistle it's plain to see that the guy has passion!
Instead of worrying about who we can get in to replace him or move us on why can't we just take stock and get behind the guy? There's no reason why with loyalty from the fans/team and backing from the board we can't push up next season or at least finish really strongly (anythings better than this season!)

10 games 3 wins 4 draws and 3 lost averagre points 1.3 x 46 games = 59.8 .Hardly championship promotion form. But give Nigel his due he's been a breath of fresh and is a great motivator. We would need to average around 1.8 points a game to have any chance. There is a need for a clear out therefore exit Dyer, Wright-Phillips ,Thomas ,Euell ,and Idinakez and bringing a qualtiy striker and defender and play the youngsters that measure up.And by the way Nigel a new 2 year contract so that he feels committed to the club and more importantly the club are committed to him. Come on Lowe show us how you really feel.
Incidently Lowe is quoted as saying there are issues to be resolved but that he could not reveal any information(The independant Monday). As I've said before I believe the only reason why he and Wilde have buried the hatchett is bcause they have one common aim. SFC? No Money! There want to negotitate the sale of SFC and get the best price on the deal and have a golden handshake when they go!And let's hope that is soon!!!!

On the subject of Nigel.
He has EARNED the right to have first refusal as Manager next season. It might be a very sobering lesson to all the wingers if he was offered the job and turned it down for a "bigger" Club.
Many, many thanks to Nigel and all the boys. The alternative was a nightmare.

I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY, RUPERT LOWE IS NOT HERE FOR SOUTHAMPTON FOOTBALL CLUB. THE MAN IS HERE SOLEY TO PROJECT HIMSELF THROUGH THE MEDIA. WHAT OTHER CHAIRMAN INCLUDES HIMSELF IN TEAM PHOTO'S?. HE IS COMING BACK LIKE IT OR NOT, BUT WILL HE BRING IN THE INVESTMENT OUR CLUB NEEDS?. I DONT THINK SO. I DONT THINK THERE IS AN IVESTOR READY TO INVEST IN A P.L.C. THERE ARE PEOPLE READY TO PUT MONEY INTO FOOTBALL CLUBS WHICH IS TOTALY DIFERENT TO WHAT IS ON OFFER AT OUR CLUB. WE MUST FOR THE SAKE OF THE CLUB ALL UNITE AND JUST HOPE HE HAS LEARNT. THAT TO BALLANCE THE BOOKS DOES NOT MEAN SELLING THE LIKE'S OF SURMAN,LALLANA AND DONT PUT US THROUGH THE MANAGER'S MERRY GOROUND AGAIN. SO COME ON LOWE AND WILDE YOU HAVE CAUSED ENOUGH UPROAR THIS SEASON NOW GIVE US SOMETHING TO ROAR ABOUT AND TAKE US UP.

Maybe not, but he is the best business man for the job at the moment.
Do you really think he likes selling good players?
The fact is, to keep a club like saints going is an awful lot of money. What good is it keeping 3million+ players, when the rest of the team can't give them the service?
You sound like someone who drives a top of the range Merc, but lives in Portsmouth.
Why try and look good and cling on to something you used to have and go under, when you can fix up the old banger and at least get from A 2 B!!

Congratulations!
Well Done!
Before you all dislocate your shoulders, trying to pat yourselves on you backs, remember that this success could be one of two things:
A) A change in fortunes, with the club starting a revival or
B) A blip that sees a similar battle next season!
Despite the criticism from some quarters, Pearson has done an excellent job, with limited resources, but the loan players will now be returning to parent clubs.
It will be interesting to see what players he is able to attract during the transfer window, and more important, whether there will be the money to get them.

I think that all credit must be given to Nick Illingsworth of the Saints Trust and others who have consistently got behind the club during these troubled times, and am sure that their support was appreciated by the team!
When we all work together, we get the results we need.

In my forty years of following the Saints I have been to four finals, three at Wembley and one at Cardiff and have followed my team through Europe more times than I can remember. I have also seen the greatest footballers of our time in a Saints shirt. Saints have never been in the fourth division and our club has never been sold for a pound! We have also had footballer of the year and the young footballer of the year in our team in the same season. The skates have a lot to do before they are half as good as us.

I think that all credit must be given to Nick Illingsworth of the Saints Trust and others who have consistently got behind the club during these troubled times, and am sure that their support was appreciated by the team! When we all work together, we get the results we need.quote]
Get real. who are you nick illingsworth?
He is part of a small outfit of not even nearly men, that have systematically trashed saints and their decisions from day one.
You must well and truly either be him or one of his bum chums....... Foley?

What a joke, all these people saying goodbye to Nigel! We need him to stay. Here are some reasons to keep Pearson: 1. Get over the premiership rush...it will happen at some point.
some good and balanced points. I think that like it or not we have to properly stabilise. Pearson has brought back some respect and is an honest and good man but i'm just not sure he is the one....not saying he isnt but would like to see him given a go. Having improved the defence 100% (and with Davies still to come back) i believe our problem focus area is midfield as time and time again we give the ball away or just allow other teams to cut staright through this area......very interesting times ahead i think...

Cast your mind back twelve months, and your team was play-off quality!
A year later, after a last-day win keeps you from relegation, you appear to think that all your problems are behind you, and next season it will be a case of 'onward and upwards'!
As Portsmouth are through to the FA Cup final this season and in the top half of the Premier League, it is possible that they may not reach the same heights next season, but to say, 'and up0wards for the saints and the wheel will begin to turn again!' is a trifle optimistic!
To all followers of football, with the exception of your fellow fans, rather than the wheel beginning to turn again at SFC, they think that before that happens, the wheels will have to be replaced, because they fell off this season!

You build the team from the back, then good midfield and forward line. It's the BASICS! You obviously don't have a clue about the game? And burley got it all wrong. Bottom line - you score more then opposition! NP had to work with what he inherited. He brought in strong defenders to plug the gaps, and has done a TOP job for the club. Look at all the good players burley got rid of cheaply? They are playing well in championship and premier for other clubs! And look at the players he brought in that haven't performed? Makes you wonder about his ability and/or motivation! Give NP a chance. Saints should honour the chap and offer him a contract, it's the best thing that has happened to the club for some time. And he only had couple of months! Don't let idiots screw it up again.

What have you done for the club?
How many shares have you bought?
It is usually the ones that do the least, that criticise the most!

The club is run by a businessman who knows that the investment is for the long-term.
So you think that Rupert Lowe will place more emphasis on the academy!
So you are resigned to the club selling any young talent, just to keep the club afloat?
Like you, I would like to see a return of local derbies between our teams in the Premier League.
While many of your fans are full of optimism after winning the battle with relegation, there is still a long way to go, and a lot of pruning has to be done to cut out the 'dead wood' and passengers, to get the club back on to a sound financial footing.
Some people may not like it, but Football is a business, and your business has not been run very well for a number of years, and the team has suffered!

OWTSGMI
Have you any news on the current condition of the Manchester United Supporter who was attacked by your fans outside 'Saint's Fans Pub' a few years back? The big crowd you had this weekend was because everyone was expecting it to be a funeral, and even with a win, it would have been if others had won! You had to rely on others to keep your position! So you think that Saints will not slide down the leagues, as Pompey once did! Let me remind you that, this time last year you were play off material, at the opposite end of the table to what you ended this season! Your loan players will now return to the clubs that hold their registration! What does that leave you with? Optimism? I doubt it! How much money do you think that Pearson will have to spend when the transfer window opens? I bet it is a few bob short of what Harry has to spend! IF (R) IF Pearson has money to spend, do you think it will be enough to bring in better players than the ones that have nearly got you relegated? With the boardroom problems, and the posts on these pages showing a lack of unity among fans, what players do you think would want to come and join such a club? Enjoy your relief at having avoided relegation, but the battle recommences next August! Incidentally, I am pleased to see that you admit that Pompey is THE BIGGEST CLUB SOUTH OF LONDON!
