Wright save hailed as 'defining moment'
Saints fans celebrate after yesterday's win
Saints fans celebrate after yesterday's win

Nigel Pearson hailed Richard Wright's brilliant first half reaction save as a "defining moment" in Saints' final day win.

With Saints already trailing 1-0, Blades centre half Matthew Kilgallon fired in a bullet header at goal from a corner.

It looked destined for the back of the net and from 2-0 down at half-time Saints would have had a mountain to climb to avoid relegation.

But Wright, on loan from West Ham, instinctively stuck out a hand and somehow kept it out.

Saints went straight up the other end and saw Marek Saganowski head home at the far post to level at the break and put Pearson's men back on track.

Pearson said: "There were a number of defining moments for sure - plenty.

"Good players make good decisions and Richard was in the right place.

"It was a top save and a defining moment for us."

I am extatic after yeasterday, I was at the game and the celebrations were MENTAL!! We shouldn't really be celebrating ESCAPING THE DROP though....embarrasin

g.... First thing we have to sign Richard Wright and Chris Lucetti on permanent deals, and build more in attack and defence for next season. I was really impressed with Lalanna in the last couple of matches, he is a bright spark for mext season.
Comon u reds!!

brilliant saints, i would say where all these so called pompey fans (crewwhatever) and (true blue) are now i can't wait for cardiff to beat them and then they would wish they done a bit better in the league enough said....... at the very least this was a good game and we won it now for the rebuild and go up not down

Great Save from Wright but if you are thinking of buying him off West Ham, well forget it cos the board don't fancy buying him due to fincancal difficulties.

Think again! West Ham will want more than the orginal fee for compansation for rest of his West Ham contract and Saints cannot afford to buy him on current fincial contactions.

Lowe or current Chairman Crouch will want to avoid buying players on current contracts to other clubs, only soon to be out of contract players or free agents while the club have financial difficulties.

He moved to West Ham a year ago and have only had a few years left so they will want compansation if Saints wants him.

Saints need a real takeover soon if we want to buy him!

I totally agree as soon as I saw the ball come off of the goal line and I think it was Viaffara (not sure on the spelling) clear it with an over head kick I thought that's the turning point and a few mins later we were level.
It was a great celebration after the match and showed the true spirit of Suthampton!
I feel bad for Leicster going down I would have loved to send Coventry down after they got the manager we initially wanted and the investment we almost got, so to send them down after wondering why they got the better run of things would have been great. Although I am extremelly happy with Nigel, he seems like a great man to take this club forward, he has the team battaling again and if he can bring in the right players, i.e. Wright then next season shall be one not to be missed COYR

This is true, I was at the game and he made some remarkable saves......pity his kicking was a pile of crap though.

Great game though and I finally got to walk on the centre circle at st. Mary's wahoooooo

Can you believe that Wright ended up with us? Look at the keepers at Arsenal. Are Almunia, Lehmann or Fabianski any better? Is Howard at Everton any better? NO. It seems that managers in the past have given up on him but from what I've seen he's been our best keeper since Tim Flowers (Niemi was injured too often for my liking).

Flog on Davis and Bialkowski to secure Wright for next season.

Richard Wright has been great for saints! You can tell he is enjoying it and he obviously had loves the club, did you see him with his kids yesterday?? One of them had a saints scarf on! Great! We need to sign him, maybe get rid of Poke for a nice fee or maybe even Davis, although he has been super this season, people seemed to have forgot that. We do however have to keep Bartosz Bialkowski as he is a huge prospect and a great keeper already.

We all forgive you for the times that you showed us no passion and commitment,we have asked you to show more passion and that you have done, the fans and the team have pulled together as a unit, which has helped install confidence in the team performance, we have one man to thank for that, Nigel Pearson, so come on board sort out a permanant contract for the man cause he deserves a future at our club.

The stayaway fans returned & the Dell spirt was rekindled.Grown men wept with relief but in the cold light of day what are the the board, old or new one going to do for the club. Not one of the current board or the share holders have the necessary funding to take the club forward.Lowe and Wilde want control only so that they can strike the best deal to get some of their share money back. They have no heart or finances to move the club forward.Directors and share holders come and go but the true fans are their for life. The passion was there for all to see.Director old and new.Do the right thing and allow this wonderful club to move back to the promised land.Do the deals and move on,make the fans smile and bring success back to this club.COYR

Another thing Wright did that was great was his time-wasting at goal kicks - took some vital time off the clock when we were up against it. I'm not knocking him for it - it was a great bit of profressionalism, giving his team a breather when we needed it.

Was at SMS yesterday - what drama! I thought Drew Surman played a blinder and the whole team showed real commitment. A fantastic day and one as a recent convert to football from rugby will stay with me for a very long time. Seeing the tears of joy on so many SFC fans was worth the price of a season ticket many time over. Football is about passion; what the Saints team showed yesterday was a fighting passion NOT to be beaten. I for one (and I may be being naive here) am absolutely rivetted on next season. You have to taste from the cup of failure to truly savour victory. Or something (read it on a choc bar in Canada)...

BTW Pearson - nice one. Stay with us. You are appreciated.

Well done Southampton.

COYR for 2009!

I agree Ken, it's happened to us many times this season - nice to be able to waste some time for ourselves once in a while!!

Well done Saints - time to rebuild for next year......!!!

lol at crew 657 or whatever his name is not bein able to come up with a proper come back. I'm so proud that we managed to stay in this division, all we need to do now is build on this last result and take that victory into the next season.... and some decent financial backing wouldn't go a miss
