Dyer expected to sign new deal
Nathan Dyer
Nathan Dyer

NATHAN Dyer is expected to end his long running contract dispute with Saints this week and sign a new deal.

The 20-year-old winger has been banished from the first team by Jan Poortvliet after refusing to sign a new contract when his current deal expired at the end of last month.

It has left Dyer in the wilderness and on a week to week contract while at the same time he deals with the legal proceedings he is currently going through with respect to charges of burglary.

If Dyer opted to leave for another club Saints would be entitled to a compensation fee but Poortvliet has made it quite clear he would like Dyer to stay and after a period of reflection negotiations have restarted.

As a reward Dyer was given his first pre-season outing in the 3-3 draw with Eastleigh on Saturday and scored Saints' opening goal.

Now Saints will wait to hear whether he is prepared to commit himself to the club again by signing a new deal.

Saints' academy director Mark Wotte said: "They are talking and Nathan said to me he is keen on staying at Southampton."

"I spoke to Rupert Lowe about it because he is training very well in individual training or in small groups or with the under-18s but once they had almost reached an agreement it was kind of a reward to let him play and maybe get him ready for August 9.

"He's a very talented player and I think it's a boost for him to be back on the field and play a match."

Good news, hope he does sign, we are certainly a stronger squad with Dyer in it.

Maybe I have missed something... when is he due in Court?

This is Great News, he has seen something at the club that has changed his mind..... or maybe no one else wanted him anymore!!!!

Glad that the matter is coming to a sensible resolution, we could never afford to buy a player of Dyer's undoubtable talent. I just hope the judge gives him a wrap over the knuckles and he can put the last few months behind him.

I think you're right. I bet he gets a severe roasting (whoops, can you say that) from the Court and then get on with the rest of his life.

You could almost right the Judge's remarks yourself.

Wotte said "I spoke to Rupert Lowe about it because he is training very well...". I would have thought he should have spoken to our FC Chairman and not the PLC Chairman. I hope that Wilde is not drawing a salary as he is doing b*gger all to earn it.

So his agent can't find him a club yet ! Let's hope he has matured a bit, I hate what he has done and his attitude to the club as much as anybody, but am prepared to cheer him on as long as he wears red & white stripes with pride

Will you want to cheer him on if he ends up with a tag around his ankle?

On the matter of Dyer. He is defintely a gifted footballer with a lot of potential. He obviously has been badly influenced in his social life, which is another matter. I agree with the posts above, he should take his punishment and get on with his life. From a footballing perspective, I hope that he continues his development with Saints, and matures into a really good (dare I sugest international) footballer?
For "seeker of the truth's" benefit, you only have to refer to the official site to see that Miachael Wilde is a none exectutive director (i.e. does not get paid). His position as chairman of the football club is an honourary one, which reflects his majority share holding. So stop the vindictive sniping, and "put up or shut up", i.e. buy Wilde or Lowe's share of just accept the reality. I have, along with most other realistic supporters. Saints Forever.

I do wonder if it had been someone like Andrew Surman who had got nicked, whether some fans reaction would have been different?

If we only had players in our squad who were squeeky clean and never done a stupid thing in their life... we'd have no players.

When Ossie nicked the FA Cup, it was just a laugh wasn't it?

May be his new salary should have a percentage sent to the Re-offenders suite. And a percentage sent to the Victims Support Unit !!!

I guess you're implying racism. Ian wright slaughtered his own boy on talk sport for bar blu incident so I'm not going to apologise for agreeing with him.
yes i would slaughter Surman, as I have Joey Barton.
What Ossie did was a laugh IT HURT NO ONE and he was a football legend, he'd earnt the right to be a bu**er

There are some things that are stupid and then there are some things that are downright criminal. It is a pity the Positive Pete has not learned to tell the difference. Thieving is a crime. It is also a shame on him that he is trying to make out that there is an element of racism in all of this. I admired Ian Wright for laying into his boy publicly for what he was supposed to have done and I think Barton is a nasty piece of work. Dyer will have to face the consequences of his actions if he is found guilty but he has none of my sympathy for he has brought shame on himself and his family and our football club. He has a lot to do if he is to redeem himself starting with a public apology to the people whose handbags he was shown rifling on CCTV.

Well if he does it again, then he will probably get sacked from the club, so it looks like he's been given another chance.

I agree that people deserve a `second chance.` However, I also reserve the right not to spend my pension watching malcontents like Dyer, BWP(poss), Barton, Bowyer et al strutting around a football pitch. As in any other form of `entertainment,` I`m choosy who I pay to watch - and I`m afraid these two have brought the reputation of the club into even more disrepute than I thought possible with the return of Lowe, so I`ve not renewed my ST and will stay away because I don`t want to be associated with or be identified with any organisation which continues to employ such people.
Posted by: Positive Pete on 10:22am Mon 21 Jul 08
To compare what Dyer and BWP did with Joey Barton has done is quite wrong.

I don't remember much outrage by fans when Beattie was done for drink driving?

What Dyer & BWP did was wrong and stupid. I'm sure both them are very regretful of the incident and it won't happen again. So let the courts do their job and don't forget to take into account their previous clean record and excellent support of Saints community work before so many fans take the moral high ground.

So am I. I'm happy for them to pay the penalty decided by the Court and hopefully be publicly humiliated and made to feel 1" tall.

But that's an end of it. You pay your price and then you're entitled to get on with the rest of your life.

My real loathing is those who bring footy into disrepute.

Amongst these I would include Agents and that process, Clubs and Management prepared to do brown envelope deals, Racists of any kind and players not prepared to die for the Club.

A bit of theft captured on CCTV makes you a fool but not a rogue.

Dyer is a good player, just think he needs to build up his strength & play consistantly & I feel he could be a valuable asset to us this season. He likes to go forward & with the teams new attacking formation hopefully we'll see him shine on the pitch.

We just need to bring in a couple of defenders now. Davies & Lancashire are going to miss the beginning on the season, Svensson's still got a way to go. We desperately need a RB & a LB. ...Anyone heard any news on?

It means Dyer was probably looking to move to the premiership in which like Rasiak, he would be bench warming... but for us he is first team material. he is not ready for the premiership. Theo struggled and he was actually very tallented.

Dyer has a long way to go and with us he will probably play most games.

This is a classic case of his agent bigging himself up promising the world and realising no one actually wants Dyer just yet. His injury and his court case havent helped him, the small bit of hype he had last season has disapeared.

Time to pull on the red and white again and prove your worth Nathan

we have to find a formation in which we can play both Bradley Sh1te and Nathan Dire, otherwise nobodys possessions are safe in the changing room during a game...

My wife still misses her John Rocha handbag, that was stolen, so I have little sympathy for his dilemma.

I believe NATHAN DYER is Innocent. The police are unable to trace the other three in the video any one of whom could be the thief so they are victimizing two high profile footballers who were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Nathan is a lovely lad and I for one will standby him and I hope to see him in a SAINTS shirt for many years to come.

People make mistakes then people are forgiven and get on with their live. He deserves to be made to look pretty stupid because he’s done something pretty stupid.

However the main point that people should be discussing is, is he good enough to play for Saints.

My opinion (for which I fully expect to be lambasted) is that he is not. He is quick, yes but he has a limited amount of skills to accompany that pace.

The main reason that I don’t think that he is good enough though is his temperament. He looses confidence almost as quickly as he can get down the wing. This translates into bad crosses and failed attempts at beating players.

Last season, before he retired injured you could visibly see his performance and his confidence drop when the opposition worked out some of his tricks.

According to the BBC:

Goalkeeper Richard Wright has returned to Ipswich Town from West Ham for an undisclosed fee.

The 30-year-old former England international has signed a two-year contract with the option to extend the deal for a further 12 months.

Wright, who last played for Ipswich in 2001, joined Arsenal for £6m but failed to make an impact.

He spent five years at Everton before joining West Ham in 2007 and ended last season on loan at Southampton.

Regarding Nathan Dyer's potential, I'm afraid I have to differ from many postings above. I've seen most of the games he's played in and generally been disappointed. He is a poor crosser which is a basic drawback for a winger, he dribbles head-down and is therefore not aware of players in better positions, he is very light- weight and so is easily moved off balance and he has a tendency to dribble until he disappears up his own proverbial.
Posted by: Richard Wright's eager pen, The Ipswich Contract on 6:08pm Mon 21 Jul 08
He may be quick but He loses the ball too much and over cooks his dribbling (much like Ronaldo used to do), he is inconsistant and too short (like Shaun Wright Phillips)...oh and he is a THIEF too.....If thats not enough to get rid I dunno what isn't....like has been said the only reason he is talking now is the harsh truth is he can't find another club due to the risk of imprisonment or bench warming!!

Also was fed up to see Richard Wright has signed for Ipswich....guess we are stuck with Kelvin Now...a chance missed!!!

Ideal solution would be to play him for the first half and sub him at half time. He could then rumage thru the opposition dressing room, and add some much needed funds to save the club.

You have obviously not seen the video of the event. What I can't quite understand is why the other three connected to the incident have not been identified by Wright-Phillips or Dyer. Surely they didn't go out for the evening with complete strangers. Is it a case of honour amongst thieves.
Those two have helped to drag this once proud club further into the abyss.

That is OK then we don't mind thieves if they are mediocre footballers and are prepared to play for the Saints. Dyer earned more in a month than the barmaids from whom he stole earned in several years so they don't matter. The thieving little b@stard and his mate should be kicked out of our football club.
