CONTRACT rebel Nathan Dyer has been welcomed back into first team training by Saints head coach Jan Poortvliet.

The Southampton boss had banished the 20-year-old wide player from the senior squad's sessions, after he refused to sign a new deal at the club.

Dyer's contract expired at the end of last month and, since then, he has been on a week-to-week deal at St Mary's.

However, he has reopened negotiations and was given his first taste of pre-season action in Saturday's 3-3 draw at Eastleigh, scoring Saints' opening goal.

After the game, academy director Mark Wotte said Dyer was "keen" to put pen to paper on a new contract.

With positive talks resuming, Poortvliet said he had decided to bring Dyer back into the first team fold.

Although he will not travel to Weymouth for tonight's friendly, he could be involved at Cheltenham on Saturday and Hereford next Tuesday.

"Nathan is on the way," said Poortvliet.

"He trained with us yesterday morning and today he will be here again.

"I want to have him in training today with the rest of the boys, because I think it is good for Nathan to be here now.

"I could let him play tonight, but at first I want to have him in training for a while.

"Saturday and next Tuesday will be more likely for Nathan."

Im confident this is the season dyer starts to realise his potential. He was excellent last year before he got injured and this formation really suits his style. Of course, he will get up the pitch but his willingness to track back is a neglected part of his game (one reason why Burley tried to convert him to fullback all those years ago). The speed and fluency of dyer and lallana together will be one of the highpoints o f next year. mark my words!COYR

Well well well what a total farce !

SFC made a rather daft pr stunt on Dyer not signing up and dropping him in training. Now a couple of weeks later they are rolling out the red carpet !

Dyer has still to plead on his theft arrest and do us fans really want that sort of player playing for SFC ?

Dyer to me is a one trick pony and nowhere near as good as some think.

Another Pr disaster for the club

Great we get to keep a second rate player as well , oh joy i cant wait to see him run down the wing into a cul de sac and then lose the ball or put in an awful cross or fail to track back when he loses the ball. Such a waste space , it's all right being fast but you have to some skill.

He will be playing in the conference in a few years time he is that bad , i really cant see what all the fuss is about and why saints are so desperate to keep him.

Pretty sure you lot have been watching the wrong player!!

Nathan Dyer is a very good player, who's still very young and is only going to get better. Sure he might not be Champions league or England standard but he can do a job for us in this league. When he broke into the team last season, his pace and trickery made a real difference and you'd have to be a fool not to realise that we missed his presence when he got injured.

When he came in he was a one trick poney with a lot of pace and little strength or end product. He is now a one trick poney with little strength or end product. The truth is that in this country we place far too much value on raw pace. I dont think that if we got an offer for him it would be too long before Natan started to talk about how he feels it necessary to leave the club in order to further his carrer. I equally dont feel that the club should stand in his way if this happend. The truth is that for all the similarity between them at first Walcot is dedicated to adding strength and an end product to his game while Nathan has just stagnated.

I think some people are forgetting that Dyer is still only 20 years old and that it is therefore unreasonable to expect him to be a 'complete' player just yet.

He has been inconsistent but also his form running into his injury last year was actually pretty **** good.

I think he is too young to give up and yes he has done something stupid but then I guess a lot of us have done stupid things at a similar age.... I'd guess quite a few of the 'stone casters' on here have had moments in the past.

Lookin forward to seeing an attackin midfield of Holmes-Lallana-Dyer playing behind either John or Rasiak. With 2 of Schneiderlin, Wotton, James and Gillett just behind them, we have a very good midfield if they can add some physicality to their game.

yet another pre-season has come, and nearly gone and SFC is still trying to cobble together a team while a lot of other teams have their sales and buys sorted out. we do a U-turn on a young , lightweight player who's rarely delivered what he's promised and meanwhile we still dont have one recognised experienced fullback and nobody has a clue who will play centre forward. is it any wonder that we so often get off to a slow start .

Getting Dyer on a new contract is simply a good business decision , He will move on in the near future and if he is contracted saints can name the price rather than a Tribunal. Makes a lot of sense.

I think the clue to who is playing CF is Stern John being given his favourite squad number, I cannot see us selling him so I think it's reasonable to assume he'll be our main man again next season.

Unless you choose to believe every rumour out there?

So have I. I have told my son that a Man who loses his good name loses everything.

I wonder what we would both do if our children were in the dock.

Would we forgive them afterwards and help them move forward. I would like to think I could but I do worry that I would become a bull-headed retard who told my son that I could never forgive him.

you could be right about Stern John being first choice but firstly , it should be sorted out by now with just 17 days till the first league game and secondly i'm not sure John can play as a lone striker in JPs formation. it demands a lot of movement, strength and mobility - not exactly SJs strongpoints.

I think some people have forgotten that Frank Bruno had a chequered life as a youth before finding Boxing and longstanding popularity and, didn't he admit to drug abuse after he retired, which didn't help his subsequent mental state however, he's still welcomed at boxing matches, youth clubs, gyms, supermarket openings and signed memorabilia sales. perhaps Dyer, too, will grow up.

I invite those who are claiming Nathan is not a good player to review the SAINTS results last season. Look where we started to go down hill by loosing and drawing games. It may be just coincidence but you will find it all started the game after Nathan was injured. Nathan has pace, defenders hate pace; he is a great asset to any championship team. He was improving every game up to his injury in early December, he was even winning headers. He is a great asset to our club. I can’t wait to hear he has signed a contract.

Please allow the courts to decide this other matter which has nothing to do with Nathan's Southampton employment. I for one believe he is innocent. The Police are only processing this as the players are high profile. It would appear that little effort has been made to trace the other three on the video. Oh, and yes I have seen the video, but I believe there is an innocent explanation which is why the event was not notified to the police until several days after.

Dyer is lightning quick but rubbish at everyhting else... I have it, the club should bring in Dwain Chambers. Think about it he's about four times the size of Dyer, twice as quick and not up to anything this summer. Plus he cant be any worse on the ball than Dyer which means that most fans will think he is a brilliant footballer. There we have it we want Dwain

Dyer should be rated on his football and not for the alleged theft charge. Leave him alone! He is so young and inexperienced where life is concerned. I watched him play and score against Eastleigh on Saturday and thought he played quite well. Please concentrate on the fooball and not his personal mistakes.

The Anti-Lowe/Management faction (anything connected with Lowe is, de facto, wrong) have absolutely no concept of sophisticated stuff like this. Even if he is found guilty, after the Court hearing, he is still entitled to take his punishment and get on with his life. Wouldn't we want that to apply to us as well? The only person going to suffer is the idiot who committed the crime and is ridiculed and mocked in the short term until it all gets forgotten in the sands of time.
Graham are you being deliberately ironic, or do you not proof read your postings?

After Friday's game, my son and I stayed behind to obtain some autographs. Noticeably, when Dyer left not one fan called his name and asked him to sign anything and he just walked off, head down like a dog with his tail between his legs. Perhaps DYER realises that SAINTS fans don't suffer fools gladly and if he doesn't want to play for the Club he can clear off. SAINTS players, have to earn the respect of the fans by the way they behave both on and off the field - he needs to look at Le Tiss and Claus and learn. I was encouraged by what I saw on Friday night, especially the right back and we played some good pass and move football at times, especially in the first half.

Guilty as charged M'Lud. I do try my best but sometimes fall far short of the very low standards I set myself.

You are right and I have to admit that postings are not as black & white as perhaps I perceive them.

The Innocent until proved guilty is,however, a matter of supreme importance to me.

I've done a bit of jury service and it was an unbelievable mess where the Bedford Police made such a pig's ear of the case that someone who was "obviously" guilty (yes, I know) we, the Jury had to find them innocent.

So you never know.

We should always end these introspective postings with some chirpy comment about next season but I'm still far too nervous to relax.

Not quite anxious, certainly not relaxed.
