How would Nigel Adkins use potential signing Jay Rodriguez?
10:47am Thursday 31st May 2012 in Adam Leitch
By Adam Leitch, Chief Sports Writer
Saints may see Jay Rodriguez as a long term replacement for Rickie Lambert.
The club are prepared to smash their transfer record to spend £7m on bringing the 22-year-old striker from Burnley, and therefore view him as a long term investment for the club.
A few fans have raised eyebrows at Nigel Adkins spending such a large amount of money on another player who is untried at Premier League level ...
... when, on the face of it, Saints appear to have plenty of strikers who have proved themselves in the Championship but have yet to grace the top flight.
However, Saints have a long term plan and part of that is to recruit hungry, young British players who are desperate to prove themselves.
From a financial sense, players such as Rodriguez are always likely to have a good resale value, commanding probably double their £7m initial investment if he is an instant hit and some bigger clubs take notice.
But he would still have a reasonable resale fee even if he doesn’t cut it because of his age and his record in the second tier at Burnley.
In that way it makes some sense financially, even if some argue that a 30-year-old who commands £7m in wages over a few years but who you know can score goals in the Premier League might be a better investment, given Saints’ squad.
But Saints must have an eye on eventually replacing Lambert and, in Rodriguez, they have are hoping to sign a player who could one day take over their talisman’s mantle.
That is not to say the pair can’t, and won’t, be able to play together, they very much will.
And the fact they both have a strong physical presence offers Saints the chance to play direct and, more importantly, get crosses into the box.
In the Premier League they are unlikely to out-pass lots of sides as they could in the Championship and League One, so it’s as good a tactic as any.
As fantastic as Lambert has been, and hopefully will continue to be for at least another few years, he is now 30 and no player goes on forever.
Saints have to be mindful of that and, in signing a 6ft 1in target man type who can also score plenty of goals, they are surely buying themselves a future line leader.
They are also buying the kind of insurance that they were remiss not to get last summer.
Lambert has a remarkable fitnes and disciplinary record, and it’s just as well for Saints as they rely so heavily on his presence.
He is the talisman for the team, not only because of his goals but because he is vital for the way they play.
Without him, they have lacked ideas.
They could not afford to go another season relying on Lambert being fit.
In Rodriguez, they could finally have someone who can slot straight into that mould, meaning that if the main man is out they don’t need to consider changing formation, style and personnel just for that reason.
As to where it leaves some of Saints’ other strikers, is an interesting question.
Will Adkins be aiming to start Lambert and Rodriguez, two fairly similar types of striker, together?
Or will he want to use one of them alongside Billy Sharp or Tadanari Lee?
If Saints do complete the Rodriguez signing, they are suddenly blessed with six first team strikers in the shape of the new man, Lambert, Sharp, Lee, Guly do Prado and Lee Barnard.
And that’s before you take into account forgotten man Jonathan Forte, who was signed as first team striker, and youngster Sam Hoskins, who is trying to break through.
That is surely too many, given the 25-man squad rules.
Hoskins would be exempt but to think that seven of the 25 will be strikers is surely too top heavy.
So will we see some depart?
Surely not Sharp and Lee who have just joined, or, obviously, Lambert or Rodriguez.
Do Prado is not likely to go as he also challenges for a place on the right of midfield with the striking department filling up.
That leaves Forte and Barnard, two bit-part players in 2011/12, as the most vulnerable.
It will be fascinating to see if Saints try and cash in or loan them out.
One thing is for sure and that’s that in the Premier League you need goals to survive.
Saints are making sure they are not short on numbers in the striking department.

He gives up many different outlets. He has height and pace to play upfront.
He can also create goals. Therefore is an insurance plan if we cant bring in a good right mid.
Am looking forward to him putting pen to paper.

'Ignore the Blackburn "fans", they're doing absolutely everything they can to try and distract themselves from the fact that they are an national laughing stock, granted all it does is make them look pathetic but when you're a Rovers fan pathetic is actually a step up from ground state.
Jay is a top class player, he's not a goal poacher, or a target man he's a technically gifted, athletic, intelligent, creative all round attacker. On top of that he's a hard working, model pro. I honestly believe he is a potential England international - and the last Burnley player I said that about was Gary Cahill.
The only question mark I'd have is that he's only really played week in week out at one club and it may take him a while to settle in because it's a big distance to move on top of stepping up a division, hopefully Jack Cork and Danny Fox would help with that.'

You have to remember that mainly he is a striker an out and out goal scorer. He will only play on the right if we don't sign a right mid. ( i imagine we will )
People are also Forgetting about STEVE on the right. for an impact sub.

As for Guly he is one of the worst players yet still managed to score 16 goals due to luck. Can't see him being prolific in the prem what so ever. I feel Rodriguez is a good replacement for wide right.

He still has a valid part to play a small part but a valid part.

Jay Rod is the future and I hope we finish second this season as well!
We have a very hungry club and they will do us very proud.
I think with the intelligent strenghening we are doing there is some very interesting times ahead. Maybe even a few real shock results.

As for STEVE (saints+Wigan) how can you say his cross is good, he has a moderate amount of pace, but when has he ever used that pace to run at a player. And im sorry i cannot agree with you, his cross is about as useful as Stuart Downings right foot.

Guly will be brought on when we need to slow a game down. i.e when we are 2-0 up at home against QPR.
i However do think your are being harsh on Steve. He has an impact when he comes on he picks the pace up of a game. Admittedly he can easily be replaced by a better player ( a phillips or an ince ) however they would both start. if we get them we need an impact sub at times and STEVE is our man.
Back to jay i believe he would start week in week out if he joins with lee and sharp on the bench
Lee being another one of the impact players if we need a goal.

The only thing that worries me is that he was good in league one. ( when we had him on loan ) but last year in a higher Div, he wasn't as good. is it further downhill in the prem ?? I hope not.
And i agree with you King when it comes to Steve. i would never play him for more than 20 mins in a game. i would be happier though if we did get a better impact sub.
I have also herd that Kelvin Davies has been told he is 2nd choice GK next year..

The thing with Steve is that while he rarely delivers much himself, his pace means the opposition defence have to adjust to prevent him getting in behind. This frees up space for Lallana on the left, who at times last season was crowded out of games because opponents were happy to stick 3 players on him. They couldn't afford to do this when the right winger was pacey.
Either way I'd like to see Ince playing there next season
Have I just happened to see a few moments, when he's actually a donkey most of the time? I always liked it when he came on, as felt he had the 'potential' to do a trick and beat a man? OK, it might not come off as much as it should, but I prefer players like that to the old fashioned 'kick it down the line and try and outrun the full back' tactic, which almost never works.

As well as Rickie - the whole TEAM provided opportunities for Richard Chaplow who squandered chances to add to the goal tally.
Those chances couldn't be buried by Steeeeeeeeeeeeeve as he plays out wide ...
Who can deliver in front of goal ... ?? That's the question !!
ADAM - YES BILLY - YES
GULY - YES JOS - YES
You also need some-one like Jrod to bury these chances.
Doesn't matter about playing in the Premiership - against any team THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON will create chances.
Personally, I would have liked Hooper to be signed up - I would like an England rated Goal Keeper - another RB - another CB to challenge Jose (who struggled at times in the Championship) - and a goal scoring midfielder.
I like the Young Winger - Tom Ince ... but Southampton FC cannot just squander its money
and then be like everton - stuck without finance and unable to progress.
On a different subject fergie was recently boastful about manure supporters ...
YES - there are lots of plastic and cardboard cut-out manure supporters out there ...

Whilst a minority of saints fans are complaining that prem footie is too expensive in the flesh and saints haven't mustered a shot on target in the whole game he picks the ball up on the touchline and adkins whispers something to him from the dugout. He speeds down the wing cuts in does 2 defenders before releasing one of his trademark no nonsense shots that almost breaks the net and takes the stand with it. Southampton best team in the south now. next time i go to Gun Warf i will be giving the skates grief that we are the best team in the south.
Rather than the last 7 years of pain with them saying there the best.

Butterfield. Seabourne, Richardson and Harding all not good enough for PREM footie. Whilst good hard working individuals who pull on their shirt and play to their best they can't be allowed near the pitch when playing some of the best teams/players in the world. Fans have to accept players come and go and serve a purpose. Their purpose was to get saints moving up the leagues. They were paid handsomely for that as it was their job. They reached their peak and now they must either play bench warming exercises or find another club to benefit from their ability. . Steve is terrible, he has a useless touch, he's weak and his final delivery is very poor. We have much better already who we could bring on as an impact sub. As for Guly he is one of the worst players yet still managed to score 16 goals due to luck. Can't see him being prolific in the prem what so ever. You just beat me with your wise reply to Ageas SFC, someone who seems to have little knowledge of football and probably seen very few Saints games.
Dan Butterfield was more than competant in the last matches home and away. He filled in excelently when Richardson was injured.
As for his views of Dan Harding, he was probably the best player alongside Rickkie in our promotion from Div 1.
Dan Fox took his position last season, many of the goals we conceded were created from the left back position.
Harding was brilliant at Brighton, he ran them ragged so much so that their players where diving every time they got near him , trying to get him sent off.The Saints supporters were gutted.
Adkins had to take him off to put Fox on, because of this.
They managed to get Rickie sent off not long after.
Whether any of the Dan,s will be able to do it in the prem remains to be seen. They all deserve the chance to try.

all these dare i say plastic fans appear as we get to the prem sorry if i have caused a problem for you i think you have never played football and it was not hardings fault about the two late goals 1 was guly's ducking out of a header and the other was a lucky strike so where is the blame still fox always got caught out. just watch the 1st reading goal again and that is what has happend on a lot of occations last season. harding is by a long chalk a better player he can do more than fox in attack and defence. yes fox does deleiver a good ball but needs 4 to 5 attemps to get it right first. tell me also how many goals did fox get oh yes zero have a look and see how many harding got. now think about your post above and respond if you dare.

To inasane saint ... I have been a season ticket holder for the past 10 seasons so i have been through it thick and thin, still going to call me plastic now. Yea harding may have got more goals than fox but fox created like 10 times more goals than what harding actually scored. And yes guly ducked out the way but it was harding who conceded the cheep corner in the first place when he could have easily put the ball up the park, i would know as i was actually there, where were you?

i hear your opinion but the fact is your opinion does not match alot of others on here so that tends to say something about your knoledge of the game.
clear it down the park mmmmmm let me think.. under pressure from attaker the only place to put it was for a corner. so not his fault i stand by what i said guly was at fault for the goal not brave enough to put his head in. he lost us the goal.
but still WUM'S will always come out with cr4p plastic i was only refering to the fact you appear on here when we got to the prem and come out with a right old load of tosh..
so you want a new back 4 new mid and a striker, oh and a new keeper. if you want that you'd better of going to watch the blue few down the road as that is what is going to happen with them.
you might want to use the quote button under the comment it makes it eaisier to respond to you answers or are you only 12 years old since you have only had a "SEASON ticket" for "10 YEARS". enjoy your last day at school this friday..

But as i am writing this comment at work, dont quite think im at my last day of school?
Hence why the times i write on here are only between a 9-5 basis, not any sooner or after.
Sooooooooooooooooooo
oooo ...
All im referring to is the fact that you cant keep saying we need to give certain players a chance, we have to be ruthless and get more players in who can perform at that level. We'll see who's right when it comes to the first game of the season!!

Saints were under a lot of pressure when he came on with literally only minutes to go.
I agree Dan Harding did make a mistake and should have kicked into touch.
In his defence, he had had no time to get into the pace of the game at all.
You say you attended the match then you will now remember it as it actually was.
I respect that you are entitled to your opinions but it seems to me that all you see is the negatives in certain players, judging by your posts.

it seems to me you only see

Yea i agree with you totally, butterfield is solid, decent cross, harding is fairly reliable, guly will get you goals so they have got there positives but i just feel we need to strengthen in those areas.

No Dan Harding is the worst, he doesn't even merit a place in the saints squad let alone be cover for LB.
Such a rediculous thought that dan harding is a good player.
Contradiction do you think?
I am sure any person reading this could be under no illusion that you either have memory issues or you are just a complete _______.
