What's the target for survival?

Saturday's draw against Blackpool sees Saints hovering just two places above the drop zone.

With just 42 points, and a minus 13 goal difference, Saints find themselves in the thick of a relegation battle.

All the teams below them have at least one game in hand, with the exception of Leicester City, who come to St Mary's on Tuesday.

With this now very much a must-win six pointer, we want to know what YOU think the points target is for Saints to stay up.

What results must the team be looking for from the next nine games - many of which are against teams vying for promotion.

about 10 is a good shout. I think that we will get 6/7 in our next three. We just need to be a bit more confident at St Mary's and start using the with especially against leicester on tuesday.

Simple - just win the next 4 games against fellow strugglers (Leicester, Hull and Coventry) and against Cardiff (sort of struggling) and we will be fine.
Even more so if Barnsley lose to Crystal Palace next Saturday (even if they are beating Chelsea)
Come on, keep the faith and go and support the lads on Tuesday COYR

Leicester City is a must win and it is down to the players not the fans. Again we will turn out in good numbers (23500 at least). Then our usual awayday draw under NP at Hull followed by a thrashing of Coventry at fortress St Marys. That should be enough if we then avoid losing two on the trot during the run in!

im saying around 12. when pearson came in i thought we would need about 15 but other teams below us are starting to pick up the wins so i think 12 and we should be safe. leicester is a must win, lose tht and nervous times wil follow. coys

We need to take it a game at a time and get a couple of wins under our belts just focus on stayin out of the relegation zone then re build for next season with a team with some heart

Take each game as it comes. There's no point setting targets, that just adds more pressure. Keep supporting the team and the results will come. There are plenty more twists and turns to come before the season is over, but we MUST be positive. Another excellent away following away from home needs to be matched by a passionate support at St Mary's on Tuesday night and for the rest of the season. COYR.

If you think Hull are struggling then you obviously haven't looked at the table recently. They're in the play-off zone, 14 points above us. That wil not be an easy game to get anything out of.

I am finally past caring, 35 years of supporting saints, both my uncle and Grandad supported Saints, but I really do not recognise the club anymore.

Today was the first time I thought, I'd rather go and watch kids football instead.

I think the whole organization deserves congratulations on their effort to attain a lower league status so soon after being relegated from the Prem. Well done!

I think another 10-12 pts should do it although the fixtures we have got are very tough. I just hope that by some miracle we can stay up because 4 pts out of last 6 is not good enough! Hopefully wins will come soon and other teams will loose.

best pies worst team ah well cant be good at everything, perhaps they would win a pie thropwing contest, ( preferably at lowe who should jump off the itchen bridge or fall on his sword ) if he had any honor

Saints now have the same number of points as Southend had when they were relegated last season
Posted by: Ed, Church Crookham on 10:53am Sun 9 Mar 08
I am guessing one point more than the bottom three. Speculation is pointless. All the press do is speculate because it fills pages. How about we fill the blinking stadium and roar them on that is worth a point a game anyway.

A good target would be to be to believe in themselves and to continue playing with the passion and commitment shown lately, to increase the confidence.
Learning to shut up shop when in front would come in handy.
Pearson to continue his fine team selections and obvious motivation.
On their day (which there haven't been many this season) Saints are as good if not better than any other team in the Championship.
I belive we can do it in style and finish respectably mid table.
But do the team?

The Game against Lecister is a must win and with Davies now out the Lad's need our full support on Tuesday I think if we beat lecister then we will push on from there and stay up.
If we lose however there is every possibility we will go down!
Be optimistic COYR

Our downfall has been our defence, and even under Pearson there has still not been any improvement,it could be our downfall when it comes down to relegation.
Sad times down at Southampton.

another 8 points at least, a few more and we should be safe

Personally, I think 10 points are required. I don't think we'll do it though, unless we win the final game of the season. Up to this point I see wins against Leicester and Burnley, with draws against Coventry and Bristol.

That means a last day effort required for a win and I just can't see us managing it.

Its a very sad situation but I think that relegation is looming. I certainly think that we'll be in the bottom 3 within the next 4 games - which will only add to the pressure.

It was ironic this morning as we were discussing the likelihood that Newcastle might get relegated and my first thought was that we'd get a high profile couple of games next season. Then I remembered, we probably won't be in the division if they do come down!

I think a defeat or a draw v Leicester and we will struggle to stay up. I would be interested to hear the views of the Lowe out / No to Hoddle brigade who have to take some responsibility for the situation we are now in.

If the board had backed Lowe and bought back Hoddle instead of listening to the no brains in the Northam stand perhaps we wouldn’t now be in this mess. Remember, when Hoddle walked out we were 7th in the Premier League. Ok, he was wrong to go in the way he did, but so were the board in not taking him back. Well done you Northam boys.

It's worrying, no question, but I think you have to look above us, rather than below, for hope we'll survive.

Forget Sheff Wed, their two games in hand will sort them out.

I'm hoping that Barnsley are taking their eye off the ball and will only realise they're in trouble when it's too late.

We know we're in a battle – I doubt they've noticed they are.

As long as we keep the points ticking up every week we won't have a problem, but we really need the odd win, not defeat, in between some good draws or it will look gloomy.

Keep that fighting spirit though and we'll do it – but Leicester will be an absolute battle.

Sorry - this is a tough run in and perhaps at most 8/9 points.

Draws and losses more likely that wins.

Could be down!

Dear Barry,
Could not agree with you more, when I used to mention the return of Lowe and Hoddle fans on this site used to slag me off.
