SAINTS made a triumphant return to the big stage with a thumping Wembley victory over Carlisle in the final of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy this afternoon.
Top scorer Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Papa Waigo and Michail Antonio grabbed the goals as Alan Pardew lifted the club's first silverware in 34 years.
Saints' first participation in this competition may illustrate just how far they have fallen since their top-flight days, but 44,000 supporters made the trip from the south coast to see the 2003 FA Cup finalists take on their League One rivals.
The 10-point penalty for going into administration has left Saints off the play-off pace and they are just one spot above Carlisle - but the teams are leagues apart in every other sense.
Peter Murphy handed them the lead, literally, in the 15th minute when he stuck out an arm to whip the ball from the head of Lambert.
The defender was fortunate to escape with a booking but Lambert exacted revenge from the penalty spot with his 32nd goal of a prolific season.
Carlisle had their moments in the first half, not least when Matty Robson's cross was headed onto the top of the crossbar by Ian Harte.
However, it was Southampton who grabbed a second goal two minutes before half-time. Lambert flicked on Antonio's long throw and Lallana was left with the simple task of nodding the ball past Adam Collin for his 16th goal of the season.
Any hopes of a Cumbrian comeback were crushed four minutes into the second half when Evan Horwood made a hash of Lambert's cross. Collin managed to keep out Antonio's shot but Senegalese striker Waigo was on hand to nod the rebound into an empty net.
On-loan Reading winger Antonio crashed in the fourth from the edge of the area on the hour, before Carlisle substitute Gary Madine gave the blue half of Wembley something to cheer with a late header.

That was some day out!! Crowd of 74000 - Carlisle struggled to sell 20000.......ergo did Saints actually have over 50000 fans there? It looked like it from where we were sitting!! And there won't be many teams getting the opportunity to get that number of their own at Wembley! Fantastic atmosphere and singing - great introduction for all the youngsters that seemed to be there today. I hope that like our last trophy winning season we go on to promotion and the players are even more hungry for days like this.
Even though its a little trophy compared to the FA cup we have won it and it must push Alan Pardew further up the ladder to being one of our most succesful managers.
Thanks also to Nicola and Markus who of course have kept the heart of Southampton beating.

I live off the Avenue & took a walk up the road to see the coaches come back this evening in the rain.
I didn't count them but it was really impressive to see coach after coach after coach with the badge in the front window & you guys in your shirts.
Well done to a super bunch of fans who represented us "lightweights" so well!

great goals, for me michial antonio was MOM surely pushing puncheon for a spot.
markus and nicola looked very pleased and they saw the great support this brilliant club has.

fonte and jaidi-got their head on anything dug deep and reaped the rewards
harding-solid showed a bit of pace
lallana-struggles to get in the game but was influential when he did
wotton-not his greatest outing but was put in for experience i feel
hammond- driving force of the team unsettled, challenged and chased carlisle for an age
antnio-staked his claim for a starting place pace and skill tore the LB to bits, good goal as well
papa waigo-worked the flanks well with dangerous crossing and always poaching
lambert- won almost everything in the air showed passion and nerves for the pen
GREAT PERFORMANCE BY THE LADS!!!

saints will sign michail antonio on a free from reading as he is out of contract at the end of the season. tribunal of approxately £250k
saints will either take up the option of buying the contract clause figure for papa waigo n'daiye from fiorentina believed to be in the region of £650k–£800k, or they will go for crawley hotshot charles admeno for £400k. pardew has had his scouts at crawley checking his progress. the boy has pace, power, athletiscm and is strong on the ball.
also pardew has a decision to make over the future of jon otsemebor and if promotion does not come this year then he will sign a 1 and–a–half–yea
r deal. if promotion is secured then pardew will launch a bid for angel rangel or a youngster on loan may be considered.
alex oxlade–chamberlain will be introduced more often next season as competetion for the cm places. he is bright, versatile, technically gifted and can shift.
if promotion is not gaines other youngsters such as garyn preen (pacy winger), callum mcnish (strong cm), aaron martin (commanding cb) and jordace holder–spooner ( powerful winger/striker).

I only hope that the moaners don't come out if we do not reach the play-offs because this has been a very positive season after a rocky start. A year ago we were almost doomed and were relegated, twelve months later the fans are positive and optimistic. Roll on next season and thank you Mr Liebherr.

Top day out that started for me at 2.30 on Sunday morning when noisy neighbours woke me. Went to The Green Man - just so many people there! Great venue - but a bit muddy at the end of the day.
Nothing like 51,000 thousand Saints fans in full cry (some literally). The match went quickly up to 4-0 then with the game over 30-mins awaiting the final whistle. Mexican waves at football matches when 4-0 up - what's that all about - we didn't do that at Hartlepool!There were some memorable performances, some great football - although it was called direct...lump it to Lambo!
No hint of trouble. Plenty of celebrating done before, during and after.
Highlight for me - the big screen love in between the Chairman & Pardew/Owner & Pardew.
Tired and running on adrenolin today - it means so much to us the fans to be winners. Even at this level.
Professionalism is a word banded about by Managers - but the players need to show that on Thursday night. Hopefully with the likes of Barnard, Puncheon and others back in there will be no JPT hangover. Brighton are no mugs and on a good run of late - might be a challenge to raise their game in such a poor stadium after the heights of Wembley.
Does it get any better than this?
Advantage Saints if we get to the play-off final - we've won there once this season already! I wonder if The Green Man want us back again?

The players did what was required but a special well done has to go to Alan Pardew who has worked wonders with the team. I know people have said that we have drawn games we should have won etc but we should not underestimate AP's achievements this season. Lastly I think we owe Marcus a big thank you for buying our club and persuading Cortese to run it. Great decisions by him and a good all round performance on the pitch. Now let us hope that by some miracle we get to the play offs so that next season we can give our fishy friends a really good spanking home and away. That is assumimg they still exist by then.

I was on the echo website and also on facebook as a niece for updating for me, with each goal i became more elated, at the end of the match i was crying. Remember being in Southampton in 1976, pregnant with my first child and not being able to watch the telly in the final minutes of the game. I am so happy for you all. '76 was wonderful! but it does feel like an awful long time ago, Watchin Matty at his best, and being there for his last goal at the dell with my own son(now a 4th generation saint) was stunning! that guy is my hero, we were at FA cup in 04,at the millenium, So Proud to be a saint, fantastic support!!!! although we got a bit duffed up at only 1-o.
Since then its not been very good at all, and i have apologised to my son for allowing him to see matty get a stunning treble against liverpool in '94 which decided his fate just the same as mine had been in '69.
But i want to say a big heartfelt thank you to ML, NC, and AP, because you haved breathed life back into our beloved saints,
yesterday was top drawer, and we are looking forward to many more!

We may go onto win FA Cups and challenge for the Premier league in the future, but nothing will be as important as yesterdays Paint Pot win. It was possibly the most defining day in Saints history.

Spent most of yesterday with tears in my eyes. Can't believe how far the Saints have come in just 12 months. I honestly thought we were going to the wall 12 months ago. Just returned home to Spain. Met a Carlisle fan on the plane tonight who conceded his team "were rubbish".

Driving up the M3 on Sunday was brilliant. Thanks to all the fans who (perhaps couldn't get tickets but turned out and) lined the motorway bridges waving flags. A brilliant send-off to the red and white army who made the trek to Wembley. Felt really proud to be one of them.

Watched the highlights on BBC2 last night. Made Saints look in a different league to the opposition. Sorry that I couldn't join in with the contributions during the game from Dan's "overseas platoon". Back overseas now and already making plans for my next flight back. Things are hotting up in Spain and at St Mary's.

Spent most of yesterday with tears in my eyes. Can't believe how far the Saints have come in just 12 months. I honestly thought we were going to the wall 12 months ago. i was a lucky 16 year old going to wembley in 76, memories that have always stayed with me, still got my ticket from then, and every now and then i get it out and stare at it lovingly, (despite the strange looks from the missus)
imagine how proud i feel to have taken my 14 year old boy to the game yesterday, he's been coming for about 7 or 8 years now, most of that time all he's known is relegation, frustration, even desparation.( like he had a choice!!)
like all of us he has had to put with all the dross of the last few years.
all i kept saying is Keep the faith son, keep the faith!
i remember taking him to the torquay game and getting despondent when we were seemingly losing the game, he turned to me and said 'but this is for a place at wembley' he reminded me what it means to be a saint.
he was so up for it on sunday, he spent his own fiver on a programme. he cuddled and carresed that programme throughout the whole game and on the way out after the game, he was determined not to crease it, so that it was in perfect condition to keep for all time, just like me with my 76 ticket.
went for a nice celebratory pint after the game, can you imagine how devastated he was when he mistakenly left it in the pub, (we didnt realise until we were back on the M3.
(i will try and get him a replacement but saints website seems to be out of them)
thank god we still have his ticket to keep.
however he now has his own memories of a fantastic day and i have new memories of the day that me and my boy saw saints win a cup at wembley.

Did anyone record the match live from sky tv, I got home in time to watch & record highlights from BBC2 (not got sky), but would like to have the live game on DVD so my Son & I can watch over & over & over......till the next Wembley visit...oh only this May then!
