YOU can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink goes the saying.

Beer? - now that's a different matter.

Shire horses Pride and Griffin from Fuller's Brewery joined the staff, customers and special guests to celebrate the re-opening of The Old Ship in Lower Swanwick nearly two years after it was devastated by fire.

The two animals, which weigh a ton each, were a popular attraction on the day and stopped in to greet children at the Sarisbury Infant School.

"They have gone down really well," said landlord Simon Evans who with his partner Sheila Hammond helped serve a pint of beer to the thirsty horses. Marking the reopening of the pub after a repair bill of more than £500,000 was managing director of Fuller's Simon Emeny and Fareham mayor Katrina Trott.
