Lawrie: Players sealed it for bosses
 |
| John Gorman |
Lawrie McMenemy has revealed how the Saints players gave the board confidence to stick with caretaker bosses John Gorman and Jason Dodd.
McMenemy, the 1976 FA Cup winning manager and current football board director, is on the three-man panel along with acting chief executive Lee Hoos and chairman Leon Crouch to select the man to take over from George Burley.
In the light of the statement to the stock exchange over new investment talks, and on the back of recent performances, they have decided to keep Gorman and Dodd in charge of the team - as revealed in yesterday's Daily Echo.
McMenemy said his football experience tells him the players are right behind the pair.
He said: "The first thing I would look for is the reaction of the players to judge the relationship between them and the management.
"The little bits I've seen at the training ground now and again, but mainly in the games, have proved they've reacted positively to the two people in charge.
"The official statement is that, for the foreseeable future, John Gorman and Jason Dodd are to be given the chance to carry on.
"We're delighted with what's happened so far.

| Jason Dodd |
"They were put in a very awkward position with the manager leaving on a Thursday and having to pick up a cup tie and then two league games.
"Even though we lost to Norwich, everybody that was there knows we played as well as we've done for quite a while.
"They were brave in their selection, they put out an attacking team, which people in Southampton have always enjoyed watching, and for a lad Stern John to miss a penalty was unfortunate.
"Then to go to Crystal Palace and show the resilience, against a team noted for being hard to break down, helped the two lads.
"But the main thing, if you've ever been in football, is that, in the end, the players decide.
"If they decide not to react, you've had it. But these players here if anything have given that extra percentage because they've reacted to good management."

We will see on Saturday whether the players really do back the management team, or they slip back into the comfort zone now they know Dodd & Gorman are here for the rest of the season and they don't have to impress any prospective boss who maybe watching in the stands.

Foreseeable future could mean another month. Who knows. They may be staying when a new guy is picked or may not be. Or they could get the job for good if they win most of the remaining games. Saturday will not answer many of these questions - only whether we play better than QPR!

Didn't the players pick Stuart Gray to be boss? What happened then?

This is yet another disaster waiting to happen. Its just the same old cheap option and the "lets hope they do a good job" mentality that the board has had since Strachan left!
Success this season will be staying up!

I guess that is what you call LEADERSHIP!
Backing the tail to wag the dog!
I wonder who Big Mac&Co will blame if it goes 'belly up'?
Will the fans be singing, 'sack the team'?
If in doubt, take the easy way out!

I'm happy we're not rushing to get a new manager who doesn't know the players. We all saw what it was like when a new manager comes in and doesn't like the crop of players that he has and can't change them due to money or out of tranfer window. It all goes wrong. Good luck to Gorman and Dodd, that's what I say. Players playing with heart and passion, just what we've all been calling for.

[/quote] Sailor Sam,
Is there really so little going on in your life, or with Portsmouth FC, that you have to comment on every post on the SAINTS forum?
Why not use your time supporting your team instead?
Are you really a Saints fan in disguise?
Why would a Portsmouth fan really be so interested in Saints? Do you really have nothing better to do? Do you not have a job?
Do you spend all day in your room, surfing the web for pictures of Jermaine Defoe, your little purple head in your hand, reading this forum, and wishing there was something interesting going on at Fratton Park?
I thought as much.
I usually try to ignore comments from Pompey fans, but you seem so insistent on posting random comments that the question had to be asked.
Saints fans - I apologise for this rant at Sailor Sam , but I'm sure I'm not the only one who has wondered this in the past.
Come on you reds.

Anyone know who's in charge? You can't have two captains on deck.
Hope the players didn't pick them because training's easy!

They treat fans with contempt, they're arrogant and although they demand respect from everyone, they don't respect us at all.
Why do they expect support and blind loyalty from us and give NOTHING back except excuses and posturing?

Seriously....Who is in charge out of Dodd and Gorman?
I'm not disappointed by this decision to keep them on and big Mac is spot on. There needs to be a chain of command. Two people can't always agree on the first eleven and training priorities.

I hope for Saints they will get a prober
manager, and not a man like Mr. Gorman because he like to lose and Southampton dont need to lose more games if they will in the premierleague so go high and get a top manager, like Souness, Allerdyce!!

As a supporter for over 50 years, all I can say is that the current result (2-3) speaks for itself. I am beginning to think that the board really doesn't want to see Southampton stay in the championship let alone return to the premiership.
