    Saints' style won't be compromised
    John Gorman
    John Gorman

John Gorman aims to play football the traditional Southampton way - but add a bit more excitement as well.

The experienced coach and manager has, along with Jason Dodd, been handed the task of overseeing the team for the foreseeable future after a successful three game spell in caretaker charge following George Burley's departure for the Scotland job.

During that time the team have showed a dogged and resilient side in the 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace but also an attacking element with the 4-3-3 formation and good football that saw them so unlucky to lose at home to Norwich.

Gorman believes Saints fans expect their team to play to a certain style and he and Dodd will respect that but add a bit of their own to the mix.

He said: "George is my friend and I spoke to him Wednesday but now we do the job our way.

"George played good football and the type of football I always liked.

"Everywhere I've been I've played that style of football, Jason will say that is the way at Southampton and we must continue those traditions.

"Southampton always will and always should be a footballing side.

"No disrespect but a manager could have come in and gone the opposite and I don't think the fans would have responded to that.

"Really what we're doing is to continue the Southampton way and maybe add something more exciting, our own way, on top of it.

"The way we played against Norwich we want to play a similar type of football but put the ball in the back of the net.

"It's no good being unlucky, we want to be lucky and for the ball to hit the post and go into the net."

Until we win under these 2....im surprised at the boards choice of words...but if the traditions are being kept and re-enforced we cant complain.....some clubs have traditions to stick to,and imo we should never give up ours..JG is correct...GB had our style but not the physical force or fitness levels to make an impact....hopefully things will change now

That is truly amazing, and something I had never expected to see in a reputable newspaper like The Echo!

The words STYLE and SAINTS appearing in the same sentence!

Oh no, not another bloody manager that wants to play passing football. Haven't we learned anything at all from the last two years? For heaven's sake Saints, hoof it in the air, tackle like wild animals, and let's go all out to get promoted before we try any of that fancy stuff.

To Martin and Bigman. yes, we do have to be aggressive, we have to own that midfield and not be bossed around. BUT... just hoofing the ball into the air is not going to solve anything. you have to keep the ball on the floor and work your way up the pitch. If you cant break through, then go back. It gets very annoying to watch, i know, but if you just keep possesion, you will have a much better chance of scoring.

    Well! You got your wish!

    So much for being aggressive!

Was it a straight Red or a couple of Yellows?
