Birthday boy Stumpy is in a flap

HE has notched up countless appearances on TV, visited dozens of schools, had official engagements and even survived an attempt on his life.

There is no denying that it has been a busy year for Stumpy, Hampshire's world famous, three-legged duck.

In his short life, the young drake has turned heads and won hearts around the globe - and today he celebrates his first birthday.

"It's amazing how the world has taken to Stumpy," said Nicky Janaway, owner of Warrawee Duck Farm in Copythorne. We get e-mails from all over the world asking how he is, and people travel miles to come and see him.

"It seems the world really does love Stumpy."

Stumpy was born with four legs at the ten-acre farm exactly a year ago.

He lost one limb when he caught it on a post, however that has not stopped him becoming a star the world over.

Since the Daily Echo revealed Stumpy to the world, he has appeared on shows such as Richard and Judy and This Morning, as well as making dozens of appearances at schools and shops.

Sadly he will not be able to pass on his unique genes to a future generation.

As revealed by the Daily Echo, he has been unable to fertilise any eggs so far.

Nicky believes that it may be because Stumpy has two pelvises.

"He seems pretty happy to keep trying though," she said.

Today, Stumpy was due to celebrate his birthday with his three current girlfriends and the other animals at a party thrown by Nicky and her husband Paul.

Stumpy nearly didn't make it this far. At the start of December, Stumpy proved himself to be one lucky ducky when he survived a savage fox attack.

He was unscathed - but sadly, one of his girlfriends was taken by the fox.

"We really hope that this time next year we will be celebrating Stumpy's second birthday," added Nicky.

"He has been so lucky to make it this far. He is just so adorable and he has a real attitude. He's my pet and I love him to bits."

So it's fine for you to look at things out of curiosity but not for others?

      Ah, the cop out answer.

Why take responsibility for your own hypocrisy when you can blame the media?

He never makes sense, surely you've noticed that. Most people just ignore him now in the hope he will go away....
