Boy finds grenade in Totton field

Andy, 10, who found a hand grenade while playing with his friends.

MUDDY clothes or a grazed knee are normally the worst news you can expect from your children after playing at the local park.

But a Hampshire mum got the shock of her life after her young son dropped some bombshell news on the last day of half term.

For the ten-year-old had strolled casually into the family home carrying what later turned out to be a fake hand grenade he found while playing hide and seek with friends in Totton.

After taking the potential explosive off her son, Lisa Huggetts calmly phoned the police who told her to place it carefully in the back garden and to evacuate the house.

Less than a minute later and while still on the phone, the mum of six heard police sirens tearing their way to her Totton address.

The tranquillity of the quiet residential street was then shattered as several police vans, the army and then the bomb squad turned up to seal off the road.

The grenade, which turned out to be a training device, was then swiftly blown up as stunned neighbours watched in amazement through their windows.

Lisa, 40, of Huntingdon Close, said: "Andrew came home and said mum, we found a bomb. They had been playing with it outside. It was made of metal and felt like a real one. I thought where on earth have they got this from and why is it laying around?"

The Oakfield pupil had picked it up from Testwood Farm after playing with his brother and pals on Friday afternoon at around 3.30pm.

She added: "Seconds later there was van after van after van of police, the army and bomb disposal unit. It happened so quickly. I was scared but it was taken out of our control. It's something you watch on TV but you never expect your son to bring home a grenade. It was more exciting than a soap and quite eventful for the last day of half term."

Andrew, who now keeps a picture of the grenade on his mobile phone, said: "My friend told me it was a bomb. I just thought it was something heavy. I knew if I pulled the pin it would explode. I thought it was a pretend one. We passed it around playing catch and seeing how heavy it was.

"The police took me over to where I found it to see if there were any more but there weren't any."

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: "It was a training grenade with no explosive. It could have come from anywhere, either UK or US training. It could have been privately or personally bought. It has no moving parts. It was not a serious issue."

C'mon Daily Echo. This is tabloid sensationalism and you know it.

The land where the grenade was found and where your photograph was taken used to form part of Testwood Farm (you did get the location right I suppose). It is definitely NOT the "local park"!

There are public access rights on the land and I believe that the local council are in the process of purchasing the area concerned for future public use.

As for writing that "the mum of six heard police sirens tearing their way to her Totton address", I live adjacent to Huntingdon Close and should obviously get my hearing checked!!! (Yes, I have been home for the last week before people start saying that's why I didn't hear anything).

There was a time when the Daily Echo reported facts and nothing else. Please don't exaggerate stories or misrepresent the truth.

What about the odd used condom or hyperdermic needle? They seem to be commonplace in modern parks (or farmland as the case may be).

The censorship on this forum is woefully inconsistent.

A number of posts have been deleted from here, for no apparent reason.

Actually, I tell a lie, there was one common element. They all criticised The Echo.

Why not rename the 'news'paper "PRAVDA"?

Despite the posts that have been there all day slagging it off?

Methinks you're suffering from a persecution complex...

How pathetic that nobody recognised that the yellow ring around the neck indicates a dummy training device.
So why endanger anyone by blowing it up ?

    Fidel,

First of all, I hope you are keeping well under the circumstances.

The fact is, my bonkers old communist friend, that they haven't been there all day. They were removed for some time, then appeared again later.

Hence the nature of my post.

I understand that you're a bit under the weather at the moment though, which is probably why you weren't paying attention.

Now wrap up warm and look after yourself OK? I'll be over with some grapes in the week.

So they have been deleted and undeleted just to make you look like a goon, Rufus?

What other possible explanation could there be?

    Do you have a communist-leader-nam
e-generator? Either that or you're very very clever!

Probably not quite as clever as you like to think you are though, I'm sure.

I can't explain why the posts were deleted and 'undeleted' (is that really a word?). The fact remains, they were, as I've explained to you (or your 'friend' Fidel).

In the interim period I made those posts regarding censorship, which are now redundant.

I hope that helps you resolve this whole issue in your mind. I'm sorry to have taken up so much of your time, but it is clearly very important to you.

Give my regards to Fidel, the poor soul.

The best use for this grenade is pull the pin out and throw it into the council offices

Rufus, you seem like a bit of an Internet attention grabber.

Sit down, and tell me what troubles you.

Perhaps they did - after all they had the time and inclination to take a photograph of this "dangerous" device.

haha it wasnt fake it was a dud.... thats why there was an "explosion" the bomb squad took it away and played catch for a laugh trying to be kids again then hit it with a baseball bat and it exploded... the daily echo lies to make you feel safe and to give you a good story... but theres had a crappy ending... they should of used mine!

That was ever so exciting. What a pity it wasn't real. Could somebody leave us a real one to find next time? We'd have MUCH more fun with that.

Really George, you flatter me. I'm sure I don't grab THAT much attention of the internet, but thank you anyway.
