THOUSANDS of people flooded through the doors of Southampton University to discover the wonders of science and engineering.
Drunken worms, bouncing bubbles, flight simulators and a life model showing the workings of the human body were all on display at the university's Science and Engineering Day.
Professor Adam Wheeler, deputy vice-chancellor of the university, said: "The idea was to get young people and their families engaged in the excitement and interest in science."
The Science and Engineering Day was the first of a week of planned events to celebrate National Science and Engineering week. Tonight there is a lighter look at climate change with TV funnyman Marcus Brigstocke and on Thursday there is a science lecture by children's favourite Johnny Ball.
