YOUNG people from across Hampshire auditioned yesterday for the chance to be in a spectacular show celebrating the Daily Echo's 120th birthday.
More than 100 young people aged seven to 18 auditioned at the Hilton Hotel, Chilworth, for the show, which is being held by The Daily Echo in association with 2Groove, Dance &Fitness.
Around 80 aspiring dancers auditioned one hip hop and one jazz routine for the judges. Then a number of tap dancers also wishing to take part in the show hit the wooden floor.
Songs ranging from Mary Poppins to DJ Sammy's Heaven were heard as 20 singers from around the county auditioned for their part in Headliners, the production title.
The show, which is set to take place at the end of July, will be a magical journey, spanning 120 years of song and dance styles.
Routines highlighting the best of the roaring 20s, through the swing and jitterbug of the 40s, the rock and rolling 50s and into the new millennium with hip-hop will all be part of the production.
Katy Osborne, 18, was one of those auditioning for a place in the show.
She said: "I love dancing and thought it would be a really good experience and a way to meet new people.
"The hip-hop was really different for me because I'm a jazz or ballet person, but the jazz went really well."
Kimberley Smart, who is producing the show, is the company director of 2Groove, Dance and Fitness.
She said: "We've had about 80 dancers and 20 singers. It's been of a high standard and I'm pleased with how it's gone today."
The organisers are also looking for make up artists, hair technicians and costume designers. For more information contact Kimberley at groove.dance@hotmail.com or call 07929 289030.
