More gales on the way
Click here to see some of our readers' pictures.
SEVERE gales are set to batter Hampshire's coastal areas again today.
Hurricane force winds, driving rain and spring high tides brought widespread flooding to coastal areas of the county yesterday.
And there was chaos on the roads, rail networks and at Southampton docks where operations were suspended due to high winds.
Now Met Office bosses have warned of a repeat of the dismal conditions with winds due to gust up to 60 mph tonight.
And the weather is expected to get even worse by the early hours of the morning when rain arrives.
Yesterday, a gust of 95 mph was recorded at the Needles off the Isle of Wight - just shy of the highest ever for the south coast, which was clocked at 103 mph during the storm of 1987.
At Southampton, sea levels reached record highs when spring tides combined with strong winds.
A number of schools across Hampshire were closed for the day due to power cuts while waterside properties were flooded and sea walls breached along the coast.

Hampshire needs to purchase more carbon credits if a repeat of this bad weather is to be avoided.
Ignore 1987 - that was a natural occurance.

Surely all weather is a natural occurance.
I, for one, do not get sucked in by all this human accelerated climate change.
That is just an excuse to raise taxes under the green issue.
The weather has a history of change going back over thousands and billions of years.
What caused the changes back then?

Ian you're right, all weather is a natural occurance including heavy winds and rain. Anyone saying anything different obviously never had a proper education.

An increasing amount of the tax take is based upon climate related concerns. Before long we will simply have Climate Accelerated Taxation.

Since the beginning of time the climate has been changing.
Climate change IS a natural occurance and, while I am not saying we should waste precious resources, we do not have the power to stop nature moving forward.
What we can do, of course, is stop building houses on natural flood plains and start cleaning out water drains on a regular basis as happened 20 or 30 years ago.
However, I did find it rather strange in Hythe yesterday when I saw sandbags being delivered to local businesses by, I presume, council officials.
The sand was sealed in ... waterproof plastic bags. How can the sand absorb the water? The water would just flow through and over the plastic covering!
Maybe the businesses were meant to fill traditional absorbent bags with the sand, but if so, no one had told them to do this or, presumably, had not provided the cloth bags.
As such, the businesses I saw just had pile of sand packed in polythene bags around their entrances. Would love to have seen what could have happened if water levels had risen!

How can people seriously ignore the wealth of scientific research and evidence that points towards man accelerating climate change.
Yes, the planet goes through climate changes naturally over the coarse of hundreds of years, but the speed of recent changes are unprecedented - and the direct link from mans waste to accelerated climate change is well documented.
I wish I could agree with the sceptics, believe that man is having no affect on this planet, believe that it's just a ruse by the government to reap more taxes, that would be the preferred option for me I can assure you.
Then I would not have to be concerned about what state we are going to leave this planet in for my children, grand children, etc. We refer to ourselves as the 'consumer generation' (with India and China etc catching us up), but maybe future generations will have a less polite term for us lot!

In The New Forest we have had water logged fields, gale force winds, hail and heavy rain for days but did that stop council putting men on mowers to cut the grass on the council estate?

Perhaps you could enlighten us as to what caused these weather problems, which I hasten to add, is before all the reasons given now.

Gosh, at least with all this wind the washing will get drier quicker. If it didn't rain.
It's enough to make you sing.."rain, rain go away, please come back when we have a drought. Or something.

Gorey Al writes "the planet goes through climate changes naturally over the coarse of hundreds of years, but the speed of recent changes are unprecedented"
So he was there from the beginning of time watching all these climate changes slowly unfold was he?
Nothing can be described as "unprecedented" when we have no knowledge of whether the climate has changed with similar speed in the past.
And I'm talking of millions of years here ... but then, Gorey Al will be able to correct me on the precise length of time it has taken for the world to cool down and heat up again since the beginning of time!
I may be a scientific cynic, but at least I enjoy life rather than worry about what might or might not happen!

Apparently scientific research proves that cow pooh gives off more harmful gases than many 21st century industries.
Oh well, guess I've better go and shoot the cow ...

it makes sense to work with the environment we live than work against. Any anyway what if all your cynics are wrong?
Personally I would prefer to pay extra taxes for nothing than not, and destroy our planet for the sake of a four wheel drive car and a plastic bag.

Maybe because most of the research was commissioned by Government bodies who have a vested interest in making sure everybody believes what they say? Maybe because any scientists that offered research that contradicted the status quo had funding removed and/or were removed from the panel of scientists used?
How can you seriously believe research that has been 'created' under such biased and corrupt conditions??
Ok, I am not saying that we shouldn't try our best to reduce unnecessary waste, recycle etc but the whole 'end of the world caused by man's activity' is sci-fi at best or thousands of years away at worst.
The planet will be fine for your children and their children.

Messianic truth. The more you repeat it the truer it becomes. Whilst most of the world has experienced cooling and colder weather recently (look at the facts) those green desciples only speak of areas where warming (over a relative short period) has occurred. The last mini ice age ended sometime in the late 19th century. Thankfully the wilder the claims become (the we are all doomed scenario) the more people will begin to see through this latest religion.

So-called anthropogenic climate change is one of the biggest swindles of all time. It's nothing more than an abuse of science and public trust. If the governments of this world need to generate extra cash, I wish they'd be open and simply raise income tax. I don’t appreciate being treated as if I were an ignorant d*ckhead.

This planet will do what it does best.
DO IT'S OWN THING
No matter what we do we cannot stop its path.
Just enjoy life the way we know it. Let nature take its own actions.
Global warming and all this rubbish. Who was to blame for previous ice ages before man was even heard of?
It's all rubbish. Any excuse to tax items that are a so called threat.
World leaders will end this world before nature does GUARANTEED

Duh, summed it up, "enjoy life as we know it" - so what if a cow farts, it used to be known as country air, now it has become life threatening pollution, the latest one, stop wearing a tie to work and save the planet. Don't ask !
