Sneak preview of city wall lights
WITH a flick of a switch, a stretch of Southampton's medieval walls will be seen in a whole new light tonight.
Five historic arches near the waterfront will be ablaze in a sea of multi-coloured lights every night for at least the next two years.
The result of £77,000 of taxpayers' money, the lighting scheme, known as Halation, is the latest bid to give Southampton an elusive wow factor.
It has received a mixed reaction with some people describing it as a waste of public money while others said it was an imaginative tourist attraction.
Funding was approved by the Southampton Partnership - the same strategic group that rejected plans for a £250,000 bronze replica Spitfire which would have stood on the roundabout outside the De Vere Grand Harbour Hotel.
Motorists driving past that spot were given a sneak preview last night as engineers tested the high-tech LED lights.
The lights can be programmed by computer to display the 600-year-old walls, along Western Esplanade, in more than 10,000 different colour combinations.
Five standard programmes have been installed which flash pink, orange, purple, red, yellow, white and blue, according to artist's impressions.
Southampton City Council public arts officer Elizabeth Smith revealed there would also be special lighting displays on the anniversary of the Titanic sinking (April 14), the 90th anniversary of Armistice Day (November 11) and the anniversary of the Southampton blitz (November 14).
The lights switch on automatically at dusk every night using a solar time clock that reads sunlight.
They will turn off at 1am, though this could be extended at the height of summer as the evening stay brighter longer.
It is all part of a long-term plan to artistically light up the walls and other parts of the Old Town.
Light artist Simon Watkinson, who created the scheme, said: "I wanted to take something from the Old Town and intertwine it with the new and in this instance the high arcades.
"The arcades have been through many eras, for example at one point they were part of a house. Halation emphasises the changes these Arcades have gone through."
Councillor Derek Burke, Cabinet member for leisure and neighbourhoods, said: "It is important for all of us to remember that the city has a fascinating history and projects like this really engage the public and could help to bring back to life parts of Southampton."
Mayor Councillor Stephen Barnes-Andrews, will switch on the lights at 6.30pm tonight.
The launch of Halation kicks off the Southampton Shows Off weekend, which celebrates the city's creativity, talent and culture.

I quite like them. Is that allowed? Or do we have to think everything in Southampton is cr*p? There's some kind of law about it apparently from the relentless whinging here.

[/quote] No it's not allowed. People on here like to whinge and the Echo likes to knock anything that isn't the lowest common denominator. The lights are OK, in fact they're interesting and attractive. They're not the "wow factor" but that's a pretty stupid concept anyway. One piece of art or tourist attraction does not make a wow factor. It's more an attitude of mind and the perception that the city is lively, vibrant and "can do". It is not a rather pathetic model of a Spitfire perched on a roundabout that's set to disappear soon anyway.

Who actually walks around there anyway? Maybe a couple of people coming off the ferry and a couple of business men staying at the de vere walking arm in arm with their escorts?

I saw this wonderful sight and cannot praise the council enough for backing the project.
I am disappointed that the general public cannot appreciate such a work, but I suppose that's why they are called the general public (although peons is probably a better word).
Well done all those involved. Bring on the bronze statue and keep Southampton as a city of WOW !

I quite like the lighting it will kind of match the Casino at Town Quay.
The point is how did lighting cost £77,000
Has this figure been made up?
Surely this kind of project, as it is a nice idea to improve the city, should be run in conjunction with Southampton University. The students could have designed the lighting and done all the work?
And saved many thousands of Tax payers money?

They could have asked me for some spare Christmas lights. Or they could have gone to the pound shop and bought some. All the same this would have saved money.... Ho ho ho!

I thought that Southampton wanted to be a greener city, having these lights on every night is going to waste so much electricity. Think of the polar bears!!!

The lights look great but why £77,000. I can't help feeling that is far to much. Maybe it's just the initial cost per light which is to high and the cost will reduce as more is added.

May I just say that in all my years of dealing with "artist" and "designers" that this is the most blatant bunch of waffle I have come across, the guy has decided to chuck some lights in then found out a little about the walls and come up with this "reasoning" behind his "concept" and once again the city swallow it up like a Gimp on poppers.

I bet you probably haven't taken the time to view this magnificent scene ? I suspect however that neither have any of the narrow-minded souls who have made these negative comments.
It is so sad to see that so many people cannot rise above the swamp and appreciate fine things.

After a bit of digging around, I notice that yet again, the project has been sourced to a Northern Company.
I like the idea of improving the City, but lets keep it local. Afterall, it's the locals that know the City better than anyone!

I assume we're talking about the arches that have had scaffolding outside for god knows how many years?
If so, what a great idea, now on one side of the road we have beautiful lights and on the other we have ugly flats.
If we want to improve our City, should we not start on the 'entrance'. Visitors to the city come in from the M271 (aswell as other routes) what a great impression they must get of Southampton whilst driving that route.
