A very smart way to protect property

A HI-TECH crime deterrent aimed at helping catch criminals operating in the area has been rolled out across Southampton.
SmartWater, a new "liquid DNA" which can be painted onto household items or used in a spray format in cars and businesses, leaves a forensic fingerprint encoded with the owners' details which is almost impossible to remove.
The solution is undetectable under normal light, but any traces of the liquid will fluoresce under ultraviolet light.
Officers spent yesterday visiting schools and companies around the city to mark their property with SmartWater.
Crime prevention officer Sarah Badham, said: "Burglary within Southampton is fortunately relatively low. However SmartWater has been very successful in other parts of the country and we are hoping to recreate that success in Southampton."

How will the owner's information remaining on the stolen item help catch criminals? Burglars usually steal to then sell the items on so it will help identify stolen goods but won't necessarily help catch the orginal thief.
I saw something on TV last week and believe the actual use of the water is that it leaves a trace on the burglar so they can be identified at the scene of the crime?
Would that not be more useful?

Look at the drop in armed robberies in the South since that pond life was shot dead in Chandlers Ford last year.

I personally wouldn't be keen on shooting someone but a bit of ultra violence wouldn't go amiss!
