THOUSANDS of Sikhs brought Southampton city centre to a colourful standstill as they celebrated the festival of Vaisakhi.

The traditional procession welcomed in the Sikh New Year and began with the raising of the Nishan Sahib (Sikh Holy Flag) at the Civic Centre to mark the festival's 20th birthday in the city.

The Nagar Kirtan (the procession) started and ended at the Gurdwara Tegh Bahadur Sahib with a colourful crowd of people singing and banging Indian drums (known as dhol) as they made their way along the city's streets.

Yesterday's celebrations were organised by the Council of Southampton Gurdwara's in partnership with the Sikh community of Southampton to mark the 309th anniversary of the festival.

To "British Born and Bred".Sikhs have temples, Muslims have MOSQUES.

Our city isn't celebrating it.
The Sikh population of Southampton are celebrating it.
I can't find any reference to non-Sikhs celbrating this in the article so whether they would celbrate Easter is a particularly weird point to make, Born and Bred.
And I wasn't aware all the Sikhs celebrating had complained about Christmas, Anon. Have you got a contact inside the Sikh community who has revealed to you their nefarious plans to do some rather underhand, disruptive and seditious complaining?
tsk, tsk, really, people complaining?! It gets my goat that does. How very dare they...

Being a white Christian you can still celebrate and attend the Sikh celebration.
I have, and had a wonderful time. They treat you very well and welcome you even more.

To Our glorious city person - what the hell you going on about.
Does the artcle need to state non sikhs attended. -Doesnt say they did or didnt.

Whats EASTER got to do with it? and people complaining.
Not sure what the hell you mean by this.

In interest of everyone. Religious celebrations should not be celebrated in public on such a scale as no matter what you do, you end up treading on some ones toes. Imagine if satanists wanted to do a similar thing. There would be a massive uproar against it. I suppose its just typical modern Britain, bending overbackwards and all that.

Kevin, Glorious was repsonding to two posts that the Echo have since deleted, not the article itself. So it won't make sense now. It did about ten minutes ago though.

Kevin, I was posting in response to the thoughts of two people who had posted. The Echo have removed the posts though as they were a little on the inflamatory side.

Out of context my post does just read like the witterings of a moron, yes, but at the time it was written it was actually pertinent, I promise :)

To All you people out-there,

I think some of you forget we live in a multi-cultural society. Just because one of the major faiths is celebrating its festival doesnt mean that they are any different to a christian, muslim, jewish, Hindu or any other faith who wishes to celebrate its festival.

I know many Asians who celebrate Christmas, Easter etc and many christian who celebrate Vaisakhi, Divali plus more festivals. People assume there are barriers to people cultures, without knowing/exploring how can people make such negative comments!!!

maybe its a case of lack of education, respect for others, Ignorance, Awareness and sometimes Jealousy. I pity those of you who fall into these categories. I say open your eyes and you may see things differently and learn something new!!!

Its always a minority who think like this!!! So to those of you who know what I am talking about you know where I am coming from.

Good luck to them let them enjoy their day.
I just hope these same people don't complain about the English flag flying around the county on St George's Day, let's hope not.

I think the only people who complain about the English flag flying are liberals worrying about how people are going to react, rather than people from different cultures.

Good for them Good for us.
Look in our own environment how people celebrate.

As a French man happily living in this country I felt sad when I did come to the news that the Catholic in Northern Ireland were not celebrating the Protestant festivities.

This world would improved considerably when all of us would consider ourselves as an integral part of the whole humanity.

So why aren't the liberals complaining on behalf of christians etc who are againt the sikh celabration. But of coarse we'd then be called racist.
Iwonder how long the Echo leave this on incase it offends the sikhs

you are completely spot on. iv read many of these comments and they arent racist, more idiotic, the fact that one faith celebrates one of their festivals in style. Not many cities do this sort of thing, in fact its mostly the mjor cities that do the march. We are the only South Coast city that does this, so to all those who are giving negative comments i urge you next year to just come and see for yourselves what a great festival this is.

One assumes the local authority will be flying the flag of St. George on the 23rd. April & closing the streets for the march? Of course not! Most of the apologists in politics today wouldn't know anything about St. george as he is ENGLAND'S patron Saint & all things ENGLISH to these people are to be undermined. Is this why the EU flag is flown but not the English flag?

It seems we don't have the same rich culture...St George's day isn't celebrated as a day to be proud of.

We don't have the amazing and vibrant costume and food traditions that other cultures have.

That is why the streets aren't closed for St George's day. I am proud to be English and British but face facts, we have a boring and dull culture which doesn't know how to celebrate.

We have a rich history which is full of great events and achievements (as well as events to be deeply ashamed of) but no traditions...how is that?

yeah but we are great at under-achieving in sports we created, absorbing everything American (from tv shows through to car jacking), disgracing ourselves abroad and fighting.

It's not all bad.

Oh, and we did create fish and chips!
