All we can do is win - Pearson
Nigel Pearson with the Saints players
Nigel Pearson with the Saints players

Nigel Pearson today starts the job of gearing his team up for one last push to save their Championship lives.

Saints last night fought out a battling 1-1 draw against West Brom at the Hawthorns to bring two other teams back into the relegation equation but Pearson's side go into the final game of the season in the bottom three.

If they lose they are down, if they draw then they need Leicester to taste defeat at Stoke, if they win they would be massively unfortunate to be relegated as four other results would have to go against them.

Saints showed they have the heart for a fight in holding the Baggies to a draw which saw them all but promoted but it was nearly so much more after Adam Lallana gave his side a late lead only for them to concede an equaliser seven minutes later.

Pearson said: "It's disappointing not to have won having gone in front however it's a point that gives us more of a fighting chance than had it have been a defeat.

"We've got two other teams now dragged back into it and it applies more pressure on others.

"What we have to make sure we do is our side of the bargain and that is to win our game because without that it's not enough.

"It's not easy going into the last game with things up in the air in terms of it being out of our hands to a certain extent but we take the positives out of the performance in terms of the commitment and application of the players.

"I'm delighted they've got something out of the game but it will be very tough still."

With so much resting on the Sheffield United game Pearson feels Saints have an "obligation" to fight for a result but has faith in his players.

"I think when the stakes are so high we have an obligation," he said.

"We have players capable of putting in big performances and we need to do it week in week out but it's not the time to go into the whole season.

"At this moment in time there's only one important game left and it's vital we get the right performance and more importantly the right result."

He added: "It's not easy when you come here because they're a very good passing side and we had to try and limit the number of times Greening was on the ball and Saganowski's job was to lead the line and get around Greening when we were out of possession.

"There is always a chance of knicking it when you stay in the game.

"Their goals had a bit of fortunate about it but they missed one or two chances so it was a fair result but I'm not really interested in it being fair - three points would have been huge for us."

Whatever happens, I can't fault Nigel Pearson for effort. He will do every thing he can to ensure the players do the job. The players must stand up and be counted. Won't be easy for them against Sheffield Utd. Saints are under huge pressure. So don't get on their backs during the game. Let's hope they have a bit of luck for once. And Stoke do a job on Leicester.

Play like we did last night and we have every chance but please just make every chance count or we could pay the price , keep the fight like last night and take the game to them as they will be gunning for us 2 get into playoffs. All we can do is our best and fight til the final whistle and hope other results go r way. good luck saints.

We are at the bottom because over the season we have been awful. GB set the tone of the season with his passionless football and a serious lack of leadership. Gorman was a mistake. The only hope the club have provided this year has come from an unlikely source, Nigel Pearson. His team selection, tactics and passion have been great and his leadership has had an impact on the prima donnas.
I hope everyone gets behind the Saints for the final game, we need to make St Marys a formidable place for the Blades, we need to dominate on the terraces as much as on the pitch.
I urge everyone to save their criticisms of this season until after the game, treat Saturday as a Cup Final because it is just as important, but remember, Nigel Pearson deserves praise and support for even coming to Southampton let alone the effort he has put in to keep us up.

was there again with my dad, brother etc and am gutted that wee didn't get all three points. the support was again superb and makes me proud to be a saints fan, the spirit in the teasm was 1st rate too with great substitutions from NP. Cant help feeling though that midfield is our biggest problem (we look tight at the back now). far too little skill and concentration in this area and would like to see a bit of a re-shuffle for the last game so that we increase the advantage. whatever happens on sunday, I would like to thank NP for instilling some passion back into the club. interesting times ahead for us all i'm sure but lets stick together and roar the saints on each week and just hope that when we do re-build we start to mkove in the right direction once more. IF ALL OF US REALLY CARE ABOUT OUR CLUB WE NEED TO FORGET ABOUT THE BOARDROOM AND LACK OF COMMITMENT FROM THE PLAYERS OVER THE SEASON.
ALL THAT MATTERS IS SUNDAY, IF ST MARY'S IS NOT FULL (LOOK AT LEICESTER'S LAST FEW GAMES) THEN WE ONLY HAVE OURSELVES TO BLAME, I KNOW ALOT OF YOU ARE FED UP, BUT THIS IS ONE GAME, ONE GAME TO SING YOUR HEARTS OUT.
COME ON EVERYONE, LETS FILL THE GROUND AND BE POSITIVE TILL THE VERY END OF THE GAME.

Good performance and good result, it's only a pity because of our shocking season we needed more! Any team getting a point at the Hawthorns has got to be pleased, depsite the fact we're still in the drop zone.

I'm a big fan of Nigel Pearson, he has to stay on no matter what. When we got him in I thought it was the worst appointment in a long history of crap appointments by SFC. Thanks for proving me wrong Nige. The signings that he has got in have been far better than most of Burley's rubbish and he gets the best out of Burleys players (namely Jermaine Wright & Jason Eull).

I wonder where we would be if Burley was still in charge. I wonder where we would be if Pearson was in charge from the start of the campaign.

Onje gripe however, why, at this late stage of the season, has Lalana just been thrown into action?! Surely he could have been doing a job for us earlier than this. Why haven't we used more of a youngsters?!

A year ago we were chasing promotion now we are chasing survival. How has it come to this? Not sure if I can handle Sunday, I may have to miss the match and sit in a darkened room... ALternatively I could get so drunk, I won't be able to see / comprehend what is happening on the pitch!

No vioce this morning and proud of it.

I went to be at eleven with a glass of whiskey and a calulator, pleased with a good evening entertainment.

The Baggies deserve promotion and their fans, unlike that lot at Pride Park, know how to behave in victory.

A special mention must go to Jason Euell, who battled his way through the pitch invasion to come over to the Away End to thank us for our support.

The alsy mention must go to the travelling Saint's fans; apart from the seven coach loads from St Mary's, we came from Cumbria, Derbyshire, Yorkshire and, ofcourse here in the Midlands. We gave it our all.

We shall, for the last time this season, make our way south on Sunday and if the Home support can give what we gave then stay up, or go down, we, the supporters will have played our part.

So, all you negative keyboard jockey's, STAY AWAY, and leave the place to us who love the Saint's.

People like you O'Grady live in cloud cuckoo land.

The team is dreadful of course I want to see the Saints win but for the last four years there has been a steady decline culminating possibly in relegation again.

I am not being negative I am being realistic I dont feel happy being a Saints supporter at the moment and no amount of spin about Pearson getting the team to have more fighting spirit will change my mind.

Exactly Rich, 5 games without a loss, is anothere way to look at it, he has done as well as he could with what he has got, good loan signings they seem to have turned the tide and hopefully it is not to late, as we all know we need a win on Saturday so it is down to the boys now.

I cannot disagree with what you are saying but his record is not good that is a fact a new manager should have been appointed in November.
Crystal Palace once lower in the league than us this season with a new manager are now in the play off so it can be done.

I dont think he is doing a bad job but he is not doing a very good job either.

I can have a point of view which is different to others but having watched the Saints for over 45 years it is very hard to accept the current situation.

The real turning point in our season were our losses to Plymouth and Norwich when he was not involved.

By the way Rasiak and Skacel were not regular players when they were loaned.

I absolutely agree with this comment about Idiakez and was beginning to think I was the only person who thought he is a total waste of space. Pearson is better than anyone we have had this season but that isn't saying much. Why keep picking Idiakez? He was anonymous in the second half and why was Safri taken off when he is the only one in the midfield with half a football brain? Viafara can barely pass water let alone a ball. I fear that it will all end in tears and I take no pleasure in saying that as a lifelong Saints fan. We need to:
Ditch the board
Ditch the debt
Be re-born like Man City.

We did well to come away with a point last night. WBA played the better football and missed a hatful of chances, but credit to the team for hanging in there. Richard Wright was my MoM for keeping us in it and adding some confidence to the defence.

as for Sunday, we need to shake up the midfield. We have too many similar players there and lack the creativity. Would not player Dyer, as he showed last night he is a clueless, lazy individual who provided nothing for the team. Lallana should be given a chance ahead of BWP too.

Credit to NP for trying to turn a bunch of no-hoping losers into a side that can be difficult to beat, but we must go for the three points on Sunday and hope that at least one of the other four scrappers fail to win.

Then the hard work and preparation for next season starts on Monday.

I can't fault NP for his efforts, but I think the odds are with us to go down. I really hope that's not the case, and we beat Sheffield United, and either Sheffield Wednesday, Leicester or one of the other clubs go down, but as a fan we must prepare ourselves for the worst, as next season our reality could be spent in Division 1 next season. I do hope that is not the case for us next season and hope we can pull this off and rebuild for our next season in the Championship.

All clubs were in a poorer position than Saints. The decline has been catastrophic. Burley,Dodd,Gorman,P
earson and above all,the players, are all culpable - the league table doesn't lie,if Saints are relegated they deserve it!
Posted by: Jonathon on 12:25pm Tue 29 Apr 08
Be Positive !!!

My only concern is that Sheff Utd are a 'lump it in the air' team that traditionally Saints do not do well against. We are better against teams that play it on the floor, as last nights performance showed.

Otherwise - we have every reason to be confident. Leicester will lose to Stoke - I'm sure of that. A team that needed a last min equaliser at home to Colchester and lost at home to Sheff Wed are not going to go away to the league leaders and get a result. No way.

Last night we showed some of the old Saints way of playing - and it was great to see. When we are positive and attack the opposition defence like Lallana and Dyer were last night, we will win more matches than we lose. OK - I know that there are still big questions about Dyer's overall work rate and contribution to the team - but he can do it when it puts his mind to it and there is no denying that he has the talent. Lets hope he is in the right frame of mind on Sunday.

Play Adam Lallana from the start on Sunday - he's full of confidence and he now knows he can score at this level. What is the point of waiting 75 mins watching John and Saganowski putting it in row Z, before you put the match winners on the field?

Attack ! Attack ! Attack ! We all know what happens when Saints try and play for a draw…..

COME ON YOU SAINTS!!!!

So proud of our boys last night. Best display I have seen in ages, been to the previous three home games which were dismal, but last night gave me hope again. Met up with my mate Terry Venables yesterday, he was watching last night and said to me yesterday....there is always hope....I shook his hand and bought him a drink...yes Tel...we have hope....The other idiot with him.....Paul Miller - ex spurs wanted me to bet against my team......(this is the guy who a couple of weeks ago told me he was involved with some consortium trying to buy out our club.......(I told him at the time...under no circumstance would we have Glen back...) I know he his best mates with him...and again "mantalk", nothing happened......But on last nights performance, Im sure we are in for a win, Leicester will loose, we will survive in the championship.....we only got to stop RL coming back and ruining all our dreams again....as Terry said yesterday....whats the point in Rupert coming back...he has got no money to put in for new players....so what can the cricket man achieve? Perhaps him and his mate Harry are trying to take us down another league......IT AINT GONNA HAPPEN.....COYR

Great performance and a fantastic point.

Not sure the Echo or anyone else has mentioned the fact that Lucketti won't be playing on Sunday, which is a big blow for us.

As I remember, he's on loan from Sheffield United, so they'd be mad to let us play him.

It's a shame, because our back five have been settled for the first time this season.

A quick mention for Jermaine Wright by the way – worked tirelessly and set up the goal.

People like you O\'Grady live in cloud cuckoo land.
Well clear off and support someone else then. This club needs positive people around it now more than ever.
It is fans like you seeing everything in rose tinted glasses who are not helping the overall situation.

It was obvious in Oct/Nov that we were not going to get promoted but all the spin was in that direction.

Most of the posts were not realistic then

Burley should have been sacked then a new manager then brought in to consolidate the team now look where we are looking relegation in the eye.

It is commonsense whether we go down or stay up is now down to luck it is not in our hands and that is an absolute disgrace.

I loved the headline!

ALL WE CAN DO IS WIN!

Now, if that had statement had been made last August, and had been true, all the Pompey fans would have been welcoming you back into the Premier League!

Good luck next weekend!

The silver lining to the big black cloud is, next season starts in four months!

Shef Wed have slashed tickets to £10 a pop, to get a big crowd to cheer them on.

Saints should do the same.

It has still been a dreadful season though infact a dreadful four years

Pompey fan here. Much as it grates me to say it, your lads played with a lot heart last night. If they had played like that all season we would be seeing you in the Premiership next year. Play like that on Sunday and you wont go down. I think you can all start sleeping safe now.

Thanks for the insight. I hadnt noticed. Glad you are a little more confident now, but please dont come to the game unless you can forget your moans from 2pm to 4pm on Sun. There will be plenty of time to pat yourself on the back during the summer about how you predicted the struggle before most others.

I'm just glad that cocky weasel Phillips didn't score last night and the other self centred weasel James Beattie is out of the equation on Sunday. Hopefully the Blades will be lost without their strike force! COYR!!

Cheer's Alan its nice to see a decent pompey fan on here who actually supports the team and isn't just out to wind up other teams fans.
It's a shame we havn't played like this all season, although to be fair had we got promoted without serious investment we would have been the next Derby.
Come on Saints for Sunday unfortunately this will be the first game I have been too since the Lecister match because other commitments, i.e. work mean I cant get to more matches. Let's hope I'm some sort of lucky charm seeing as Lecister was our first win in a while =p
Last night's point was vital, it means that although we are still dependent on other teams both Coventry and Blackpool have been dragged right back into the fight and Blackpool (who i think have Watford, or that may be Coventry)face a tough match which they stand a high chance of loosing!
Come on You Reds

I did get confident when we went 1 up last night because a draw on Saturday would see us stay up but then again my hopes were dashed.

I did go to see Saints v Everton in 1974 when we were relegated from Div 1 I think even Ossie scored lets hope somebody scores on Sunday

Not a saints fan but been a few times this year to watch. GB was tactically inept with the players he had available but SP has been a breath of fresh air for you, at least he appears to understand the players strengths and weaknesses and is not afraid to set the team up for the opposistion. WBA game was a blow you deserved all 3 bt life is like that. St Marys against Sheff Utd must be a ame that your expierenced seasoned players stand up to be counted Take them on and put n the attacking play SP has instiled in the side you will win, a nervous or cautious performance is not what is needed and I am sure SP will set up the team in the best possible way. Hope you stay up, but also hope you get someone who will support SP next season and bring on the talent you have home grown, dont sell it on think long term you tried tha and look where it go you. Good luck and I will be routing for you

whatever happens on sunday all we can ask is that our team repeats the same desire and passion as last night. Annie and I went and it was apleasure to watch, apart from the obvious tension. Thanks go to all the team who played and to nigel pearson for orchestrating them.SO on sunday please ,more of the same and come on you supporters get behind our team and really cheer them on!!
