INDEPENDENCE of the Seas, the world's largest cruise ship, promises rest, relaxation and indulgence - but for those wanting a bit more adventure, fear not - there's enough excitement to be had to last a whole holiday.

And it was excitement I got as I strapped on a climbing harness and began to scale the ship's huge rockwall.

The wall was a vertical face that seemed to go on forever, but as I reached the halfway point, things seemed to be going well.

I hadn't fallen, slipped or otherwise injured myself - a result in my book.

But soon into the second half the slow burn set in.

Jelly' My forearms felt like they were on fire, my legs might as well have been made from jelly and, just feet from the summit, I could hold on no longer.

After being lowered back to reality, I had just a few minutes to recover before moving on to the next of the ship's toys.

Having surfed for more than ten years, my confidence was running high as I approached the Flowrider surfing simulator, my next port of call.

"Have you done this before?" asked the friendly American instructor, who just moments before had been showing the crowds just how to ride the wave.

"No, but don't worry, I'm a surfer," I replied wryly.

"It's not the same as surfing," he said. "Whatever you do, don't try to surf it, you'll just fall off."

And as I jumped on the skateboard-without-wheels board for the first time, I thought I'd cracked it - but then before I knew it, the board was no longer under my feet and I was upside down getting blasted off the back of the wave in what can only be described as a wipeout.

Determined to master the Flowrider, time and time again I jumped into the wave looking like a small child at Christmas, a huge grin never leaving my face.

As well as surfing and rock climbing, guests can learn martial arts at the ship's state-of-the-art On Air Club, touch gloves in the Power Boxing Ring or even dance to Ravel's Bolero on the ship's very own ice rink.

After all, who said cruising had to be relaxing?

For goodness sake!! Plastic holidays or what. If I want to surf, I'll go to Newquay or Hawaii. If I want to rock climb there are plenty of real places in the UK. If I want to go to Disney Land (which I certainly don't, having been there, once was enough). This is just a chav holiday prison ship. It's top speed is only 21 knots for goodness sake - proabaly with the help of a tug boat. Ghastly ghastly ghastly yuck yuck yuck, no no no NO!!!!

James, could it be that your jealous!!!!! And have you actually been on a cruise? From your stupid comments I'm guessing not! I for one can't wait to board the biggest cruise ship in the world, something I shall be doing next Tuesday for our 11 night trip. Have a nice time in Cornwall I'm sure they can't wait for your arrival!!!!!

I agree with James. There are too many people who just have to be positive about everything. The concept of this vessel is quite unappealing to the non-chavs amongst us. SR doesn't seem to have grasped the English language, YOUR for YOU'RE. Bloody incredible.

what makes a cruise chav like?? any chavs i know couldn't afford a dingy let alone a cruise!!

not knocking it as i sure as hell would love a holiday on this ship BUT does a climbing wall and a splash pool with a "skateboard-without-
wheels" really amount to an adventure holiday?? nope!! real waves and rocks please.... and less chav-bashing snobs making rediculous comments!!!

Becky, dear heart. (you'll note that I spelled your name as it is spelled). A darling poochie woochie you no doubt are there is no evidence whatsoever, that this white barge excursion is anything more than for chavs. Monied chavs maybe, but chavs, nonetheless. Darling you're so sweet. PS It's dinghy, not dingy. Ha, so sweetly uneducated also. Chortle etc etc

You'll find that most of the staff on cruise ships are non-EU nationals, and that they just love to act as they please. After all, the laws of which country apply once you get on board?

I agree with James, if you liked surfing that much you wouldn't go on the independance of the sea to go on the 'flo rider'

Note to Godfrey: My niece is called Bekki and she spells her name that way. Surely the girl knows how to spell her name?!

My name is Claire, but is doesn't mean that people who spell it Clare, Clair etc are wrong?!

Absolute ****. Why use a few isolated incidents to attempt to tarnish a whole industry?

What is up with you people? If you don't want to go on a ship like this, then don't go - to be honest, the people who do want to go on it, probably won't want you there anyway. Just don't criticise those who do. It wouldn't do for everyone to like the same thing now, would it?

Bet they serve fizzy weak beer on board - good stuff for the last of the summer whiners!

There are some very odd people on here. I can understand it's not everyone's cup of tea, but why be so vitriolic in your denouncement of cruising? As for the activities (surfing, rock climbing), what next? Ban Crazy Golf because 'real' golfers would prefer St andrews or the Belfry? Not everyone wants to immerse themselves in an activity 100% and this seems perfect for somone who wanted to dip their toes in the water, if you'll parden the pun. Get over yourselves and stop being so prescriptive!

There are so many choices of holidays but what Royal caribbean are trying to do is appeal to the masses and just look at the quality it is exceptional. I might not use the surf rider thing but I would certainly be very very happy to use the rest of the facilities that are provided and are included in the price!!!
see some great pictures at this site that I have found.
