Who’ll dare to bare for naked bike ride?
More than 1,500 riders took part in Naked Bike Rides around the UK last year.
More than 1,500 riders took part in Naked Bike Rides around the UK last year.

IT is the cheeky, head-turning protest that has a serious message.

Sporting nothing but their birthday suits and helmets, scores of people will take to the streets of Southampton on two wheels for this year's Naked Bike Ride.

The bold and brazen protestors will set out in the buff from Southampton Common on a tour of the city to encourage people to dump the car and go green.

Now in its second year, organisers are hoping this year's event - on June 6 - will attract even more riders than the 102 that turned up last year.

Organiser Thea Bjaarland, who stripped off in public for the first time at last year's event, said: "The Naked Bike Ride is a peaceful, imaginative and fun protest against oil dependency and car culture.

"It's a celebration of the bicycle and also a celebration of the power and individuality of the human body.

"It is also a symbol of the vulnerability of the cyclist in traffic.

"The message to people is come as bare as you dare.

"Nudity makes a great statement, and many of us will be completely naked, but if you're more comfortable in a little clothing, that's fine too.

"In previous years, riders have worn shorts, bras, swimwear, body paint, wigs and sunglasses.

"Body painting and adornment, customised bikes and other creative expression are all strongly encouraged."

The cyclists will take a route that passes through Portswood and tours the city centre before returning to Southampton Common via The Avenue.

The event is part of World Naked Bike Ride, which has grown in popularity since its inception in 2004.

I am not in any way criticising this event, good on'em! I wish I had the guts...! Or perhaps it is my guts that stop me!

However can someone tell me why it appears perfectly acceptable for hundreds of people to cycle round a public council owned park, presumably officially sanctioned, in the nude, whereas Steve Gough from Eastleigh was constantly persecuted by the police for walking in the nude, but on his own?

Lets hope there isn't a pile up. Could be nasty if someone cycles into the back of someone else!

    A very good question.

Perhaps "the fuzz" will be present to deal with the cyclists in the same manner as they did Steve.

One thing is for sure though, there'll be no shortage of places to park the bikes should any of them choose to stop for a spot of sunbathing.

    My sentiments exactly!
I personally cannot see the big deal if someone wants to walk around nude, I have a young son who wouldnt ever bother wearing clothes if i let him, he's not a pervert (he's 8!) he just prefers not to have material hanging off him.
Whats more sexually provacative, a person walking down the road with nothing on or a person dressed in sexy, tight clothes that barely covers them up?
Good on the cyclists I say...if it offends people then they are the one's who need an attitude update not the cyclists.

Absolutely disgusting, this is blatant indecent exposure hiding behind the usual bogus "issue" of the "environment".
These people should be arrested immediately and fined. It won't happen of course, the filth are probably too busy persecuting car drivers (as ever) - something both they and these flashers seem VERY happy doing.

i totally agree with them about dumping the cars and all of us riding a bike, but why naked? i dont see where that fits in with the big picture? if we lived in a nice hot country, then i would say yes, but i cant see it in the winter time, can you?
in an idea world we should be naked but thank adam and eve and all the perverts out there, that it will never happen. i personally have nothing against any one being naked but i dont want to see naked fat bums riding down the road first thing in the morning, sorry folks

Ah, lighten up Chris, have you never seen a naked person before? You don't have to answer that if you don't want to ;)

The police could fine us, but I'd love to know what for. There's nothing indecent about it. If you're uncomfortable about seeing the human form as nature intended, I suggest you stay indoors... Or better still, join in, you might enjoy yourself!

It's not Winter time... It's the height of summer.

Although I'm not 100% sure, I'm guessing the naked thing is a reference to global warming and how one day, the world will be too hot for clothes. Or something. Anyway, get on your bike and do it! Like you say, because of perverts and "original sin", there aren't going to be a lot of times you can get away with it in public ;)

I'm hoping I can join them.

As I understand the reasons for it being naked are

    1) It emphasises how vulnerable cyclists are on our car dominated streets

    2) It gets more publicity

    3) It's fun!

I'm ok with the principle of people going around naked, but surely there should be a quality threashold.
Posted by: Pro Self Expression, Southampton on 3:41pm Wed 14 May 08
Why are people confusing nudity with perversion. It is not perverse to be naked surely it is only perverse if you intend to be perverse with your body - it is the intention behind it rather than the actual act of nudity. A flasher, for instance, is drawing attention to the genitals and targeting people to specifically look at said area. People who are participating in this event are not 'flashing' but drawing attention to the cause and nakedness brings publicity.

Tom raises a valid point actually. A naked bike ride may well be fun and harmless, but no doubt the streets will be lined with moronic neanderthals like him. Maybe the participants should be armed with tasers as a precaution.

soory but im not confusing nudity with perversion, its man that has done that, you are going to get every perv jumping out of the bushes and grabbing these people off their bikes, or flashing, go on the common and see all the flashers up there in the bushes on a weekend, or read the echo and see how many people have been grabbed up there. common sense prevails here. if you want to be nude then go to a nudist park, there is a time and a place. being nude will cause more problems and then watch the sparks fly. the poor police have enough on their plates without having to chase pervs who go after the naked cyclist.i wish we could all walk around naked and let our bits hang loose in the wind, but get real

What a desperate state we have allowed ourselves to be in. Don't we have any pride in ourselves anymore.Just how much lower can our standards drop.Who ever sanctioned this naked ride to take place should be sacked. I'm certainly not proud to be British. Whats the point of a police force if this kind of thing is allowed to go ahead. But beware it's certainly a sign of the times it would be good if you would all take the time to read St. Matthew 24 in the Bible to see that soon we will all be judged by the wrath of God, and there's no compromise on His judgement.

Yep, I'm pretty sure we do have pride in ourselves, that's why we're quite happy to ride the streets naked. It's Christianity that introduced this idea that we should be ashamed of nudity (see Genesis for the full story). I however, have no shame, and shall proudly be riding my bicycle sans clothing to demonstrate my support for a greener Britain.

As far as I know, nobody has "sanctioned" this event. It is organised by many different groups in a dozen different countries. I suggest you do a little bit of research, and if it upsets you that much, write to your local Conservative MP so they can ignore you too.

    Have a nice day.

I know you mean well Sammy, but don't worry. The same event was staged last year and over a hundred people turned up. I don't think there was any trouble of that nature (there are videos on You Tube, check them out). Everyone seems pretty friendly, if not a little bit nutty, loud and determined to enjoy themselves :D

Well, I'm the other way round :-). I'm not a greeny eco-hippy and I'm quite happy driving my car around the place thanks very much. But I do think people in this country generally are often too hung up on nudity and body image - so that's the issue I'm riding for tomorrow. To be honest, though, the main reason I'm taking part is simply that I expect it to be a lot of fun!

There are many kinds of nudity and only some of them have to do with sex, in any form.
