LEFT unwanted and unloved, these misunderstood mutts have found themselves unable to find loving homes.

Labelled as aggressive, vicious and dangerous, it is not difficult to understand why Staffordshire bull terriers have become the least desirable dog to keep as a pet in the country.

But with the launch of RSPCA Adoption Week tomorrow, staff at Hampshire's Stubbington Ark are urging dog lovers to look beyond the animals' unjustified reputation and see them for the perfect pets that they can be.

Kevin Manning, RSPCA south and south west animal welfare manager, said: "If well cared for and properly trained they can make brilliant companions."

One dog desperately seeking a loving home is seven-year-old Marley, a handsome Staffordshire bull terrier cross who has been at the Ark for almost a year. He will need an assertive and experienced owner who can give him calm handling and patient training.

Another is Jasper, a Dogue de Bordeaux-Staffie cross, who was the victim of a domestic split. He is a friendly dog who needs an experienced owner who will take the time to train him and needs to be the only pet in his new home.

I hope that Mr Manning will ensure any applicants are vetted properly so they aren't taken up by a load of pikeys looking for a free status symbol. They will only end up chewing a baby's face off due to lack of training and care.

I would like to put in a word for Staffies. My Staffie was 14.5 yrs old when I had to have her put to sleep, she was a much loved, gentle but fun family pet, who was loved by everyone who knew her.
She never harmed a fly and was in fact bullied by our pet rabbit and used to let the tortoise climb all over her.
I now have a German Shepherd who I was recently told by a neighbour that he was the best natured, best behaved dog they'd ever met. It's not about the dogs it's about the owners being responsible and ensuring that dogs are treated as dogs, with kind discipline and respect.
Just had to put my 5 eggs in! Feel better now.

A dog is for life, not just for Christmas.
