MARK Wotte believes the capture of Paul Wotton is another step in the right direction as Saints aim to blend youth and experience for the new Championship season.

An experienced spine to the team under Jan Poortvliet is quickly becoming clearer with the signings of centre half Chris Perry and defensive central midfielder Wotton.

Add to that the capture of exciting young winger Lee Holmes and it would seem Saints will aim for a solid base down the middle around which to play their youngsters in a possible 4-3-3 formation with the emphasis very much on attack.

"We are happy to have him aboard,"

said academy director Wotte, one of the new management team at St Mary's.

"As I have discussed with Jan Poortvliet, the head coach, we will have a lot of young players but we also need some players that have seen it all before.

"We need strong characters on and off the field.

"It's very important that we have some players in the team that can be very strong at difficult times.

"We're very happy with Paul.

"We think he's a great character, a good holding midfielder who has shown his quality already for Plymouth and good from set-pieces, so we're happy to have him aboard."

He added: "We will have some young players with little or no experience at all, so we will have to blend it all together as a good team.

"You cannot play with 11 youngsters, that's not our goal, you have to make a good team.

"In fact it's not about age it's about quality and if the mentality and the quality is OK then I think we will have a strong team."

Wotton admitted that he is ready for a change.

The 30-year-old has spent his entire career at Plymouth, making over 400 appearances in 14 years, but was immediately attracted by a move to Saints.

"Look around at the training ground and the stadium and it's second to none," he said when asked why he had chosen Saints.

"There's the history of the club as well and I've got a young family so the area of Southampton as well to bring my children up in is a nice area.

Am I missing something? He's a defender or Defensive Midfield player who I reckon will add some direction to the team, his record for Plymouth is good and if he is fully fit I reckon a good member of the team, I am really looking forward to Claus' testimonial now especially as Svensson and Claus should be there playing for a few mins

Say what you want about Wotton. No team with him in it will roll over. After last season what more could we want. Him, Davies and Perry are a solid foundation. He might not have been right for Plymouth but they are not lacking defensive players. Wotton will be a crowd favorite, even makes me want to get a name on my shirt for the first time ever.

The side that got promotion in 1978 had the youngest midfield and the oldest attack in the country. All the stars had gone including Mr. Channon, who returned later. The new guys on the pitch and managing need a chance. They haven't done anything wrong and are not the cause of this situation. I am hoping they maybe the start of the cure. We are crucifying people who haven't pulled on a shirt or run the line. Give them a little time.

There is a lot of optimism coming from some quarters and whilst I hope this proves to be the case...this is not going to be a quick fix. These youngsters are not going to take the whole division by storm, and we have not exactly unearthed the best coach in the game. Lets remember that....these players would have been in the first team by now if they were that good. Getting a few more older players around them too won't guarantee success. This is just all we can do in our situation.

I am glad that we finally agree .

My last sentenance relates to the fact that all the news coming out of St Mary's is relatively good.

However if we longer have Davies Davis John Saga Skacel Rasiak Surman Safri and Viafara that would put a different complexion on things.

I am assumming Wright Powell and Ostlund have gone

Don't know much about this guy, but wouldn't get too worried about track records or where he's come from.

Last season showed that players who work well in this division aren't necessarily the ones you'd rate most highly.

For instance, two of our best players at the end of last season were an aging Sheffield Utd reserve (in a season they were doing poorly) and an aging Luton defender (in a season they got relegated to League 2 even without the points deduction).

Dean Windass and Nicky Barnby are just another couple of good examples and who'd have bet on Stern John being prolific after reserve spells with Sunderland and Coventry to name but a few?

Like I say, I don't know much about him, but I'll give him every chance, especially as we'll know he's not bleeding the club dry on inflated wages.

Now your sentance makes sense, and yes this is true. Though personal I would get rid of Davis, as too often he is a liability! There are other better goalkeepers out there, possibily in Holland. Bart is better goalkeeper, and I would even try to court Niemi to come back. He is looking to leave Fulham.

My position regarding the current situation is

Lowe is a better bet than Crouch in getting us out of our current financial situation.

Lowe is unpopular with large sections of the fan base but we will have to live with it.

We should give our support to Lowe and Wilde

I see us in the Championship for the foreseeable
Future and unlikely to reach the play offs
But if we get relegated it will not be a disaster

The way forward is with bringing on the Academy Boys.

There is a risk with the Dutch coaches but they should be given a chance.

And has been consistent as well as my comments about getting rid of Burley last autumn

I only post on JB I think you may be confusing me with someone else

I think Davis is OK he played well since Xmas.

I went to Suffolk last weekend where a number of Ipswich fans thought he was good too.

I do not think Bart is a better goalkeeper than Davis.

Niemi is excellent but I would have thought his wages would be too high

Dont remember commenting on Viafara but thought he did not play as well last season as he can.

No I am not confusing you with anyone. This would be impossible.

You was for Viafara going and now you changed which you do alot.

Lowe is only better in one way and that is he will keep a very tight ship finacial. For the record I never liked Crouch, but I tried to keep this apart. Though in the buissness and the footballing world, this is not the most prudent way to go about things all the time, especially if you wish to progress.

Staying in this fizzy league is also not a option as it will cause more finacial woe, and also the Dynamic Dutch duo have said exactly the same.

i think it is not a bad signing in the current climate as we cant afford to spend much buying players or on their wages-beggars cant be choosers! but i do seem to remember reading that we tried to sign him a few years back, maybe lowe found his scouting file in the recycle bin??

i would like to see us sign a player who link the midfield and attack as i feel that sort of player was missing last year, maybe darren huckerby, who (lowe you will like this bit) unless i missed it (been on holiday) is still availible on a free

i feel that we can lose powell, wright, idiakez(good player but never quite cut it for us), davis (bart is good enough even after the sh**ter he had against palace last year), jesus(sorry, please dont tell your dad!!), safri (now we have wotton).

i think we should try and keep surman(p**s of skates), dyer (ditto, i think he will come good this year and play well in the same team as holmes), defo rasiak (lazy-yes, ugly-yes, 20 goals this season-yes)

thoughts........

I am glad too. Not to create a argument with you. But in a earlier post by you. You put Viafara as useless and to go along with some others, and I said no to Viafara. So dose this mean now you rate him and wish to keep him?
I think Davis is OK he played well since Xmas. I went to Suffolk last weekend where a number of Ipswich fans thought he was good too. I do not think Bart is a better goalkeeper than Davis. Niemi is excellent but I would have thought his wages would be too high Dont remember commenting on Viafara but thought he did not play as well last season as he can.
No Davis was not. Bart is far better, he just had a crazy spell, and everyone hanging on that. You watch him this coming season. Davis cost us too many points! He also put too much uncertainy in our defenders!!

Niemi wages would not be that great. He is a very down to earth person, and if we paid him alittle more than last time, he would be worth every penny and every point he would give us.

You made a list of players to be rid off as useless, and one of them was Viafara and we argued this one out, and you would not budge back then, but it seems you have now.

These youngsters are not going to take the whole division by storm, and we have not exactly unearthed the best coach in the game. Lets remember that....these players would have been in the first team by now if they were that good. Getting a few more older players around them too won\\\'t guarantee success. This is just all we can do in our situation. Playoffs are still an outside bet...
I totally agree I would be happy with a top ten finish . WE dont know what players have been retained.
So it just the name you go after. This is all I said in the recent pass, and you knocked it. Now under a different name you accept it! You have no consistancey, and you really showen again you do not fully read or understand posters as usual. Apart from stating the obvious! What your point on your last sentence?
My position regarding the current situation is Lowe is a better bet than Crouch in getting us out of our current financial situation. Lowe is unpopular with large sections of the fan base but we will have to live with it. We should give our support to Lowe and Wilde I see us in the Championship for the foreseeable Future and unlikely to reach the play offs But if we get relegated it will not be a disaster The way forward is with bringing on the Academy Boys. There is a risk with the Dutch coaches but they should be given a chance. And has been consistent as well as my comments about getting rid of Burley last autumn I only post on JB I think you may be confusing me with someone else
Unfortunately staying in the Championship is an option because with the players we have challenging for promotion I would have thouht would be highly unlikely. I think whatever players wee keep will be entirely down to Finance
Set your sights to achieve!

Set them low and you will achieve failure.
