UNWANTED clothes, TVs, videos, stereos and abandoned personal documents lay strewn across the streets.

These are the images that have left residents living in a popular student area comparing their neighbourhood to a war zone.

The latest round of the student housing merry-go-round has seen even more personal belongings dumped outside homes in the Polygon area of Southampton.

It is an increasing headache for residents, and the council that has to clear up the resulting mess.

Now the long-standing problem is being made worse still by scavengers hunting through the items looking for goods to use or sell.

Pat Othen has lived in the area for 25 years, but was horrified at the sights she has seen this week.

"It's just so irresponsible, and it's heartbreaking for me to watch what's happening and see it like this," said the 58-year-old, a member of the local Residents Action Team.

"I've never seen anything like it in my life - it looks more like a war zone.

"I'm not a student- hater, I mix very well with the young people around here. I'm just someone trying to help solve the problem."

She believes many of the things being thrown away could instead be donated to charities to be used or sold.

"There's something wrong because these students just don't seem to know the value of things," she said.

"Because they don't pay for it themselves out of their own pockets, they don't know the value of anything.

"People have been out rifling through the bins looking for stuff they can use. I don't blame them, because it's all working stuff.

"But it's the mess the scroungers leave. They've been round three times in less than a week.

"The council has to send one truck round to go all along the road picking up stuff from the pavement and clearing bags that are spilling out of the bins, and we've then got the street cleaners.

"That's all before the bin men even come along to clear the bins."

Pat has taken her video camera out on to the streets nearby to document the extent of the problem, even finding people rifling through bins and rubbish bags in broad daylight.

As well as a working TV with remote control, she says she has seen a video camera, musical equipment, expensive art materials, clothing and jewellery all dumped.

One file even included a student's pay slips and tax details, driving licence, phone bills and personal letters.

Pat believes more must be done to force students to dispose of their unwanted belongings responsibly.

But a Southampton Solent University spokeswoman said the university and students' union had been working with local agencies to promote sensible action.

"In May, city council leaflets were distributed to the student community advising students on the various ways to dispose of their waste," she said.

"Contact details were given for the Rubbish Revived' site, local charity SCRATCH and Actionline. In addition, free recycling sacks were available from the university during May and June."

The university should be amde to pay to clear up the mess the students left behind. The council is not responsible for the actions of the students - the universities need to take responsibility for the thoughtless actions of the students or the landlords renting out the flats.

Nothing to do with the University, as they cannot be held responsible for the actions of their students.
The students should find an appropriate and safe method of disposing their rubbish.
However, with the council cutbacks, less refuse collections being made and the charging at council tips, more of the onstreet tipping will continue.
The council need to get back to basics, offer more collection services for free, scrap the charges for collections and at tips, this has to be cheaper than running around clearing up after the fly tippers.

The council should insist on purpose built halls for the students rather than small houses crammed with 5 or 6 students . The rubbish would then be managed properly if in a large block as like in the student halls. We should bring in a city wide policy which says students in southampton should be housed in purpose built blocks rather than in houses which then could be used for families.

The problems do not belong to either the University, the Council or the Landlords, although they must all do their part. I think the problems start at home, where the students were brought up and taught lifes values (or not) by their parents. In a life where it is often cheaper and easier to replace than repair, buy new rather than make do with old, it is small wonder that such conditions exist in an uncontrolled environment. The sugestion of providing Halls of Residence is a good one, but the Universities probably don't want that because they would then be responsible for the problems caused.
Increased street cleaning would be good (but not the solution), but then SOME street cleaning would be good also. How often do you actually see anyone cleaning streets?

I think the responsibility lies with the landlords. If their tenants make a mess of the property, a deposit it withheld to cover the cost of the clean-up. Same should apply for the surrounding area. It shouldn't be the university's responsibility, any more than it would be my employer's responsibility if I moved out leaving a sh!thole

Having been a student i would like to put their point across. A lot of the time when students move out, they all leave at different times from one house, and each person in turn leaves a few things. The last person in the house should not be expected to clear up the other peoples mess. No only that, but a lot of students simply dont have the means to dispose of the rubbish. The refuse collection wont take half of it, and not many students have cars to transport it to dumps. As for things that still work, the same must be said. It is hard to pack an entire years life into one small car.
Im not sure this should be a witch-hunt to find blame. Each party involved should try and make it better. Students dont purposely set out to leave mounds of rubbish around, they just dont know what else to do.

I await the barrage of 'student scum doesnt know about life tax dodger blah blah blah'

If the last guy out doesn't want to clean up everyone else's mess, he should make sure they take it with them. Sorry, excuse denied. I've been a student, too, so this isn't a student-bashing exercise. We had no such problems in our shared housing, because we were aware enough not to just let people move on and leave a pile of cr@p behind. If you've got the means to move house, you have, by definition, the means to dispose of some rubbish.

That is the most pathetic excuse I have ever heard. I know students lose all common sense during their time at Uni, but do you really believe the waffle you just wrote???

Although your final comment rings true 'they just dont know what else to do'.

I used to be a student too and totally agree George.

I was expected to hand the property I was renting back to the landlord in exactly the same condition as when I arrived.

It was stated in the T&C's of my tenancy that I would not get my deposit back until a full inspection had taken place. Any rubbish, damage etc. would be charged out of my deposit.

Student's are only part of the problem. I blame the landlords myself. Give them a hefty fine and that will force them to make sure their tenants' behave themselves when moving out!

With an outburst like that, could you please give figures, percentages of the amount of students that actually do go on to make the world better?

I think he was talking about the student scum that stay up all night doing drugs, drinking and partying till all hours, don't have an ounce of respect for anyone including themselves and generally use the title "student" as a replacement for "lazy no good scumbag that will milk the system as well as my parents until i go to rehab or some wealthy idiot of a girl can convince her parents i'm worth pouring more money in to".

Nice try, but the argument's upside-down. Suppose I showed you that (plucks figure from rectum) 20% of students go on to improve the world. What can we conclude from that? Not much, really. You could pull some hand-waving about the remaining 80%, but that wouldn't mean much either.

No, the real test is "how many things are we dependent upon that would not be possible without study and further education?".

All meaningless really, since I know what he meant, and you know I know what he meant, and we both know that we're just indulging in some mindless banter around the ramblings of someone who - given his choice of handle - isn't to be taken seriously anyway :-)

Students aren't scum, any more than the unemployed are scum, or doctors are scum, or firemen are scum, or bricklayers are scum. Individuals are scum. What arbitrary social groups you attach them to is irrelevant

I agree with Pat for bringing it to the attention of the media ,it needs addressing .
Education is needed regarding recycling valuable goods which are just thoughtlessly thrown into the bins ,students dont know the value of things as they have not worked and saved for these things that they just discarded without a thought for the needy or the poor .
I have seen lots of people rumaging thru bins gathering a small fortune , and i dont blame them ,eg play stations I-pods ,hi fi ,eletrical goods, studio recording eqp, mikes, video camera, and much more .
Do they care about this planet ,think b 4 you bin it .
I saw the dustbin men throw 6 boxes of booze bottles in the truck ,why wer'nt these bottles recycled

How's it a deposit if it's non-refundable? Surely that's just an up-front cleaning bill

I seem to have been reading about problems with students for the last ten years or more.
Do the persons in
charge of the Unis
ever come down to ground level and go and see all this mess
on the student districts ?
Why is no attention given to the long suffering citizens in
Bevois Valley and Portswood ?
Because so many long term residents have gone that there is no one left to form an Action Group ?
So let us hear from
residents in those areas and see if the places are even worse than Polygon.

Much of Highfield and Portswood looked appalling this morning, with colossal amounts of rubbish just dumped in porches and driveways. So all credit to the council bin men, who did a fantastic job of restoring normality to much of the area during the day - thanks very much, you're a great bunch of people, doing a terrific job that most of us would rather not do!

We must be thankful that a few brave non student citizens stay in the student/HMO ghettos paying council so that extra refuse collectors and lorries can come out to deal with student refuse. Landlords should be paying to have their gardens cleared now there is no free "Take away ".
I attend all the residents meetings and some council meetings to be in the
know on the subject.
I was out taking photos when the BBC reporter was in Polygon streets and I was horrified to see many sacks and boxes of bottles thrown into bins to be taken to the refuse lorry
from student gardens.
most of these were alcohol bottles. Recently I worked in Polygon and Portswood churches on recyle projects, students donated many sacks of things but the volunteers, long term residents, students and Councillors collected a lot of bottles from gardens
and took them to bottle banks in their cars.
The Universities must do something to make students recyle properly and not leave it to others to take responsibility for their mess.
First lesson to be learned is DO NOT PUT CARRIER BAGS IN THE BLUE BINS.
Take glass bottles to the BOTTLE BANK
behind the launderette in Bedford Place.
We long term residents pick up bottles off the streets every day left there by "walking drinkers".

I’ve been about in Soton to see this mess at this time of year, it happens here in NZ too. The average student are obviously Filthy rich daddies boy and girls, they get high quality stuff, and just heave it out onto the pavement, and of course in their shallow hedonistic throwaway mindset, don’t give a **** about anyone else, lest the environment, when it comes to recycling. We have laws on car and plane emissions, carbon tax yet here are some of the biggest contributors to the greenhouse effect that do it scot-free! And this happens big time every year, in fact throughout the year in so many places, it’s alarming to consider!
