STERN John will get the chance to fire Saints to a superb victory against the Championship title favourites before continuing his World Cup dream in Cuba next week.

Head coach Jan Poortvliet is set to give John his first start of the season against his old club Birmingham at St Mary's tomorrow.

The Trinidad & Tobago striker - who is in his country's squad for next Wednesaday's 2010 qualifier in Havana - was suspended for last Saturday's opening game at Cardiff following his sending off against Sheffield United on the final day of last season.

John, who scored twice in that 3-2 win to keep Saints up, was introduced as a 55th minute substitute for Jake Thomson in Tuesday's Carling Cup victory at Exeter.

David McGoldrick, who bagged a brace in the Carling Cup first round success, moved to right midfield to accommodate John.

McGoldrick has said he is happy to remain in that role if it allows John, who scored 19 goals for Saints last season, to be involved.

Poortvliet was impressed with the way John played in midweek and is likely to use him as the lone striker tomorrow.

The 31-year-old had played at St Andrew's from February 2002 to September 2004, scoring 21 times.

He also had success against his former side, finding the net against them in his only Premiership appearance with Sunderland last season before moving to St Mary's.

I think it's a good move, Thomson is too inexperienced for this match. Wotton should replace Schneiderlin for the same reason.

Agree with you about McGoldrick replacing Thomson but Schneiderlin should start rather than Wotton.

I went to Exeter game and Stern looked a different class to the rest of our side when he came on.
Stern is not the most mobile striker but with our enthusiastic and energetic young players doing all the running, hopefully he will feed very well off them.

I must admit I felt a little worried that Saints were forsaking all the experieced players for the younger ones. Playing Stern John along side the younger players seems a good move. His ability to hold the ball is never in question however his mobility is not fantastic. The younger players can do the running and he should be able to compliment there movement. Schneiderlin was brilliant in the West Ham match showing good distribution have not seen him play since but give him a go. When is Andrew Davies coming back he looked good last season? Him and killer could be the defensive base. I'm confident that we will hold our own against Birmingham. 2-1 to the Saints

Anyone who has read this kids posts will know, he knows nothing about football and even less about Saints. He comes across as a complete fool, he's a PFC fan, best thing to do, just laugh. I'm thinking he needs a hug as he comes across as a very sad person indeed

I'd be careful about saying how much you want to hug strange kids.... That sort of thing can land you in some pretty hot water.

Stern John (aka The Old Fox) is the man to teach the youngsters how to hold the ball up, how to win free kicks and how to score.
I listened to the game on the radio Tuesday night and the introduction of The Fox made all the difference to the team. Top Man !

Not sure what anyone else thinks, but I have a feeling the crowd will be fairly decent, around 20k+, tomorrow.

Any idea's about how many the club are expecting?

Not sure what impact that will have on the speed of getting everyone in, given that the corners are to be left shut, reducing the number of turnstiles in use.

It will also be interesting to see how much noise can be generated around the ground, without having the crowd in the Northam corner to compete with the visiting supporters.

brilliant news, having experianced players down the spine of the team is perfect (kelvin, killer, perry, stern) the youngsters can inject the pace into the game.

Stern John isn't off to South America as the headline on the back of the paper suggests, Cuba is in the Caribbean, Part of the North American continent.
Trinidad and Tobago are also islands in the Caribbean and are taking part in the CONCACAF round of qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
South American nations play in the CONMEBOL round of qualifying for the World Cup.

Nice one , a 20k crowd to watch Birmingham whip your sad @rses .Sending your best 2 strikers out on loan is simply suicidal, fkin brilliant , Div 1 awaits your ambition less club , it just keeps on getting BETTER .
