MORE than 500 runners from as far afield as Norfolk, South-ampton, Thetford and Guern-sey, turned out on a wet, wild and windy day outside Princes Golf and Leisure Club in Dartford for the Les Witton Memorial Dartford 10-mile road-race on Sunday morning.

The event, organised by the Dartford Road Runners, was named after one of the club's founder members who died tragically and was split into ten age and sex categories.

It was sponsored by Safeways of Dartford, Highland Spring, the Runners' Shop in Beckenham and the club from where the race started.

The senior mens' race was won by Scott MacDonald, from Southampton AC, in 55mins 54sec, but the amazing run of the day was produced by Dartford Harrier Andrea Green.

She not only won the senior ladies' event by a staggering 14 minutes from Blackheath Harrier Julia Harrington, but was also the second-fastest overall racing 11 seconds quicker than the next senior man to finish the course which took runners through Horton Kirby down onto Green Street Green and back to the finish outside the Princes Club where the race had started at 10am.

Steve Hay, representing the Istead and Ifield Harriers Club, raced to a 55-second win in the veteran mens' race (over 40), clocking 59mins 37sec.

The Istead club had Stuart Rackstraw running for them in the veteran mens' (over 50) race, but he found Cambridge Harrier Bill Law, who clocked a second under the hour-mark, too good by nearly a minute.

Swanley & District AC's Alan Spelling was third in 1hr 4mins 5sec, while Road Runner Graham Baker was fifth.

In the over 60s event, Graham Williams, from Ilford, beat his nearest rival by just under a minute in 1hr 12mins 30sec.

In the other ladies' races, there was a win in the over 35 event for Thetford AC's Sandra Bower, who beat Swanley & District's Jane Fridgley by four and half minutes. Dartford Harrier Debbie Graham was sixth in 1hr 14mins 54secs.

In the over 45 category, Dartford Harrier Sue Wallace came third beaten just more than three minutes behind Dulwich's Susan Smith and New Etlham Joggers' Diane Lonerean. Sue stopped the watch at 1hr 18mins 51sec, while Swanley's Pat Halstead came fourth.

Dartford Harriers notched up a fine one-two in the over 55 section when Audrey Dyett beat club-mate Maureen Guard by close on seven minutes in 1hr 19mins 18sec.
