Labour leader hits back over new allowance

3:10pm Wednesday 3rd October 2001

The leader of Hertsmere's Labour Group, Frank Ward, has hit back at comments made by outgoing council leader Stuart Nagler in last week's Borehamwood & Elstree Times.

Mr Nagler said he was concerned that, under Hertsmere Borough Council's new democratic system, councillors were to be paid an allowance of £4,500, because he believed the role of councillor should be voluntary.

Mr Ward said that Mr Nagler was lucky to own his own business, and that for people in salaried jobs, taking time off work to perform civic duties was a financial burden, which he believed should be reimbursed.

"Sadly, Councillor Nagler seems unable to retire from his present role without also having a side swipe at the new basic allowance for elected members.

“This new approach to basic allowances is finally recognition of the valuable contribution made to public service by those who take office."
