Ford's Future in Southampton Paul Poolton Hannah Foster Murder Trial Fluoride debate

Centre of town needs a tidy

3:16pm Wednesday 3rd October 2001

A few years ago the council spent a fortune on smartening up the Shenley Road shopping area.

It can look nice there, I agree. But oh, what a mess gets blown around the doorways of the shops themselves. It is quite disgusting having to walk along and see it very off-putting.

Why don't the shopkeepers each clean their own shopfronts, and thus make shopping more pleasant.

As it is, I avoid Shenley Road (especially on a Saturday), as I cannot bear to see the filth.

This has been brought home to me more than usual; our American visitors were stuck in England because of the atrocities in their country, and they commented on how dirty it all looked, especially as we had just returned from a trip to Belgium and Holland, where we sawall the shopfronts being swept every day.

Of course, dirty pavements are made by dirty people; smokers particularly do not use the bins provided. Please help to keep our towns clean!
