The news from Liverpool, that Steven Gerrard is definitely moving at the end of his contract which finishes this season, was a little surprising because he is an unusual item these days in being a one-club man.

He is now 34 years old, and has spent all of his professional life with the Reds and has had a fantastic career with club and country.

Believe me, he is a very nice individual and has possibly been influenced by what happened to his former England colleague Frank Lampard, who was given a free transfer from Chelsea last year but has, if anything, blossomed again at Manchester City, where he actually scored the winner again to take City joint top of the league.

Lampard is on loan from New York City and it could well be that Gerrard will crop up in America, where, believe me, the game is making great strides.

As I said recently, I have done many interviews this season for various people over there, most of it to do with Special Olympics which take place later this year in Los Angeles, but inevitably the interviewer will ask me about soccer as they call it.

People like Gerrard will, I am sure, have a new lease of life.

But at the same time – because like Lampard he will give 100 per cent – they will, if anything, enlighten the game and enjoy a fresh start.
