Good start but what happened at the end? If we shouldn't judge Pardew now why is it okay to judge him after Saturday's game? It is only September and he has still yet to start a match with his recent signings.

I must agree with Rich a very good article from the Echo(at last!).
Give the bloke a chance, as a club we are planning for the future so we NEED stability.
This we will not get by "Ruperting" the manager so soon into the season.

Yep i agree well done Echo all true and all written on here loads of times by people who live in the real world and understand football... Its about time we gave a manager some support and respect and give them the chance to do their job. ..The first win is days away now and plenty more will follow.. top half by the new year easy..

How these people have such short memories. Just a couple of months ago Southampton Football Club was on the brink of extinction. Selling off players to stay afloat. Thankfully we were saved but the season was almost upon us. Then with a change of manager we could all believe again. But none of this meant all was perfect. Alan Pardew has revealed that the club were without scouts. Got rid of by Lowe. It is the scouts who give the manager the run down on the opposition. Without that information he is planning in the dark. Also, with new players coming in any side would need time to gel.
At the start of the season it was obvious we were several weeks behind the others in our prep. But we can surly see that with each match we are getting stronger and better. The failure to score goals and hold onto a lead are problems that needs to be solved but it will happen, and when it do, those doubters will forget their idiotic lack of understanding just like they forgot how bad things were

It was only a matter of time before one of those "blue" people from down the coast tried to hijack our message boards. After all, we have given them plenty of stick recently.

I think Simon made some very good points apart from the last paragraph, but lets keep this real we started on the back foot but have started to end the losing habit on a regular basis

Basically any new manager should always be given time to stamp his own style of play into his new sqaud,
that said 8 signings and 7 games down the line the honeymoon period is well and truly over.
Saturday is a must win especially seeing were at home, nothing else will do time for our winning run to start. Saying that with only a average of a goal a game, could it be we still need another proven goal scorer, I do realise we just got whats his name but i still think we may need one more(Mifsud available and would do damage in L1)

please don't... if you expected us to start like Charlton...I like the majority of fans will reserve judgement and try not to put unnecessary pressure on the team.

I was quite optimistic about our chances on Saturday but the more this is built up as a must win last chance for Pardew the less confident I get. God knows how I will feel if we are only 1 goal up after 60 mins

they have picked up on the deliberate pessimism and are commenting on that.

SAINTS fans, answer the following questions:-

1) Are you happy with the signings AP has made? - Yes we now have a decent looking spine to the team - KD in goal, 2 good centre-backs, Hammond in midfield and Lambert up-front. I'm sure most would agree this is a vast improvement on the team of the last two seasons.
2) Has he not tried to address the weak areas in the team? Yes combined with the players mentioned above, Dan Harding is a better at left-back than Rudi or Drew IMO.
3) Are the team playing better football to watch? YES IMO the football played against Birmingham in the Carling Cup is the best I have seen us play in the last couple of seasons.
4) Are the majority of SAINTS fans happy with the progress that has been made since the takeover? YES, AP has been playing catch-up, give him time for goodness sake.
Re-building a Club and team takes time and doesn't happen overnight.

Here's to 3 points on Saturday and let's get behind the lads.

Hopefully Papa will be dancing along with the fans.

Decent point @ Charlton, just continued a worrying trend of failing to hold out a lead and conceding goals from crosses

Lets face it the team that got us relagated was not up to much, and i dont think it wouldve done that well in league one. AP has had to try n get a decent team together in a very short space of time. How long was there between him being appointed and the start of the season? Give the man a chance

Plenty of room at Fratton if you boo boys have all lost faith in our club - otherwise all true Saints get down to St Marys on Saturday and cheer the lads on to our first win - unless you were born with a silver spoon most people would figure out life goes in cycles and in a few years we will be back to our rightful place as he leading club on the South Coast.

This team has been assembled from the wreckage in a very short space of time. Now AP has to get the team to gel. The goalkeeper and back four pick themselves, now to concentrate on getting the midfield to function.

They have been very very quiet on this today, their are some on the saints supporters facebook group wanting Roy Keane. I couldn't believe it he stuck two fingers up at the Northam when we dropped from the top. Remember!!!!! I should name and shame these people on here.

Well you say that only a few managers can turn a faltering side and turn them into winners. So how would you classify Roy taking Sunderland from bottom of the table to Championship winners in the space of a season? Roy Keane is complicated and I believe that his successes and failures as a manager are a result of his complexities and how he judges himself as a winner or a loser. He had the odds stacked against him initially at Sunderland, but when Niall Quinn gave him free reign and £££ it blunted him because he found the odds were on his side and when he started struggling he had nobody to blame but himself and he folded. The odds are on his side at Ipswich, he’s flush with new money and expected to do well and he’s festering because of it. He needs a fight against the odds to be at his best. He will not accept mid table mediocrity. Keane needs to take something broken and then fix it to be at his best, not to just jumpstart it after its stalled.

That is why I mooted him for the job. I don’t want to join any anti-Pardew band wagon, but sometimes you’ve got to take the blinkers off and admit that things aren’t working. I want what’s best for Southampton and I acknowledge that what is best is a period of stability. But stability is not worth the price of putting up with a manger who isn’t performing and the slim chance things might get better. Surely we learnt that last season. Like I said earlier, I’ll sit on Pardew till October and if he starts bringing home 3 points I’ll eat my words and a slice of humble pie to boot, but if he doesn’t he has to go, it’s as simple as that. If this opinion makes me a plastic fan then so be it. I’d rather be a plastic fan and yearn for life in the Premiership, and success for the club at any level rather than somebody who doesn’t; which makes them no fan at all.

Curious article. It starts off saying sensible things about being patient but then, as others have commented, it builds Saturday up into a make or break game for AP and the club. But I guess it's important for editors not to offend any reader, whatever their view.

There isn't any disagreement amongst fans. Just a very few dissenters that disagree every week and want change for change sakes.

The team is now full of players with Championship potential and is coming together well.

From the 42pts to Leeds in Dec pick a number you'll be happy with and let's see if we get them.

All the article did was summarise what the majority of sane Saints fans have been posting on here since the Charlton game. I am reserving judgement for another six games, but I expect at least 12 of the available 18 points. Or else I will hit the panic button and join the miseries!! For me 28 points out of the 42 but dependingon other results that could put us a bout18/20 in the league making 15th for Christmas top 10 but not quite top 6 at the end

Why is it that on average teams play better at home than away? We all know they're professionals, but there's something about the home supporters that influences a game, whether it’s the premier league or the Sunday league. IMO It's the job of the fans to cheer when the team score, giving the players affirmation to go on and score more. Similarly it's the job of the fans to pick the team up when they lose a goal, to help pick them up and to boost their confidence.

then maybe you should just realise that's where many of us differ. As I said above, I believe the way to be a supporter of a team is to pick them up when they are down. the managers will change, the players will change, but the supporters will stay regardless. how on earth you can think it is acceptable to boo a new team (in all senses of the word) is beyond me. i was just trying to add to this by making you see where i come from - unconditional support during games.

i agree that it doesn't make them any less Southampton fans. It just makes them impatient and a little stupid.

Its just frustrating for those that feel while the club is going in the right direction, confidence and attitude is still extremely important.

For me Newcastle is a great example of how negativity can consume a club. No-one was ever good enough for the Geordie faithful (inc KK)

i agree that Wotton was not at his best. but did it ever cross your tiny mind that encouragement is the way forward. if i was in his position and no matter how hard i tried to make things happen all i heard was moronic booing from my own fans would make me think twice about putting that extra bit of effort in for such an ungratefull bunch of so called fans. and you never know that extra bit of effort might of made the difference between us coming back with no points or 1/3 points.

i would like to think that we will use this season to stabilise ready for a big push for automatic promotion next season........once in the fizzy pop league we would already have a sound squad to push for promotion and will only need a couple of additions.......this is of course built upon the fact we are building sound foundations now. the premiership is not the be all and end all for me ....yes its great to play and compete with the likes of man ure but the money side of things has gone crazy and the league is full of overpaid diving prima donas. i for one am enjoying watching and supporting proper football with proper players.

More than a million on Rickie plus wages high enough to attract several players who could easily be playing in the championship. Why would anyone want to build flats on St Mary's, given there's a huge oversupply and no one would want to live in them?

Makes me laugh all this talk of give it time, patience, support the team. This time last year most of you lot were calling for the manager to be sacked. Where was the patience then? Whats so different? Could it be that all you really hated was the fact a bloke with a posh name was running the club? Perhaps more support last season and we could have stayed up. For me I always support the club irrespective of who is running it. The team is all important and they should get your support through thick and thin. Shame so many of you let the club down last season.

You are still on that old chestnut Miltonarchers, are you suggesting that last year was as good as this year and that Saints had a future, I don't think so, even if we are in a lower league, it was last years and the years before "fiasco" that put us in this position, so we are in remission from the desease we had running this club, with a much brighter future!!

Because of the protracted takeover (not Pardew or the new owners fault) we are effectively just completing our pre season as far as games go.
With the exception of Colchester there have been encouraging signs in our performances and now with the addition of Papa and Jaidi to go along with the other very astute aquisitions made by AP we are about ready to rock n roll.

Lets see a good turnout at SMS on Saturday and raise the roof for the team, once we start winning and remove the burden of the -10 I really believe we can string a run together, lets be honest when was the last time we only lost twice in our first 7 league matches?

Once we turn the draws into wins we will climb, some of those teams who have started well will falter as the season goes on, look at League 1 over the years and you will see that invariably some teams get away to a "flyer" but then struggle as injuries/suspensions etc affect their relatively small squads and fall pretty rapidly down the table - not wishful thinking, it happens every year.

My prediction at the start of the season was back to 0 points by the end of Sept and a top half finish at the end of the season with an outside chance of making the play offs should other teams fail.

There are teams - Leeds, Charlton who I believe have the squad and the resources to maintain their start and I think they will both be there to the end of the season but the rest are much of a muchness and I dont mean that in a disrespectful way its just that their resources (or lack of them) mean that they will need to be very lucky with injuries etc to be able to maintain their good start throughout what is a very tough season.

As has been said before we have no divine right to roll any team over but in terms of current squads and resources available to improve/replace we have a huge advantage over many of our rivals but this will show itself over the course of the season and NOT in the first 6 weeks!

Most honest Saints fans with any iota of football intelligence would, or should be happy if we survive this season avoiding relegation.
The delay in the takeover of our club also delayed the preparation time essential for any team to be able to perform at a satisfactory level.
Calls for AP to go boarders on lunacy – how much success has the last decade brought with the merry go round of Managers at the club – none that’s what.
We have a great opportunity to stabilise this club for a long and successful future, and not necessarily in the Premiership either – (although another couple of decades in the top flight would be spot on)
Get behind the team on Sat and the Manager and show ML he has made a prudent decision on keeping our club afloat – the in house bickering by some Saints fans on this site, and other negative posts will do little good – so go find something else to moan about. K.

I've made a few comments to this type of thread, but I've always found it really difficult to accurately articulate myself. But at last I think Lyrical Dancer has done the hard work for me. Why is it that on average teams play better at home than away? We all know they're professionals, but there's something about the home supporters that influences a game, whether it’s the premier league or the Sunday league. I agree with some of the things lyrical dancer has said - we have a much better team this season compared to last, and also better scouts and coaches but yet we aren't doing any better against weaker opposition (most of the time). However, all we need is one win to turn our season around and hopefully it'll come saturday.

Saints fans in making excuses for not winning shocker. Well, we are in L1, have money and yet still no win. If we dont win today then i am afraid the voices of contempt against the holy Mr Pardew will start to grow
