A SEEMINGLY laid-back snooker team with an average age of 61 have threatened to riot.
There is not much that raises the hackles of Nursling & Rownhams Social Club B, who play in Division 3 of the Southampton & District Social Clubs League.
Except for Q World.
Team captain Dave Carter has led his troops to many clubs over the past few years.
“Q World was a favourite hate for all of our side,” he said. “They’d be a riot in our team if we had to go there again.”
It is not believed the shock closure of Q World, in June last year, was in any way connected with the snooker players from Nursling & Rownhams Social Club.
Carter admitted his ambition for the team is “survival”.
In 2007/08, Nursling B finished seventh in Division 4. Last season, they rose to sixth in Division 4. This season, they are lying joint seventh in Division 3.
“We always play badly in the second half so I don’t know what will happen,” said Carter.
Former coal miner Brian Burton, 73, who admits he’s “not going to be a Ronnie O’Sullivan”, said: “It’s a funny game. Sometimes we play brilliant; other times we’re absolute rubbish.
“We’re not going to win thousands of pounds for playing this game. If we get promotion - fine - if we don’t - it doesn’t matter.”
Team-mate Jim Rousell said: “We’re just happy to stay where we are.”
And Tony Chamberlin added: “If you can win as many as you lose in a season, you’re doing pretty well. Gone are the days when you win the first 11 up to Christmas.”
