BROOK Social C left-hander Dave Burt insists the no-smoking law is killing social clubs.

The 53-year-old was speaking before he knocked in a glorious long black against Lee Osborne to snatch the win bonus for the home side against Division 4 promotion rivals Totton Rec C.

He said: “That took some getting used to, not being able to have a fag while you’re playing. It was always handy to have one on the ashtray between your shots.”

And Burt, a member at Brook Social for close on 30 years, added: “You used to come in and put your name up on the board and be lucky to get a frame during the evening.

“You could probably come in here now, put your name up, and have two or three frames before anyone else bothers you.

“It’s the way all clubs are going. The smoking rule’s killed a lot of it.”

Brook Social C’s 3-2 win took them one point above Totton Rec C into the second promotion spot in snooker Division 4 of the Southampton & District Social Clubs League.

“It’s nice to see that people are still about,” laughed Burt. “You do miss the odd face now and then; we all wonder what happened to him.

“It’s a good Monday night out. That’s what it’s about, meeting people and going round different clubs.”
