IAN and Trevor Staley’s record of seven Family Doubles tournament wins (between 1992 and 1999) is under threat.

But only if Chandler’s Ford Snooker Club owner Jim Everett hosts two more before Aaron Murray’s 16th birthday next November.

Aaron and Paul Boulton picked up their fifth title at the 52nd Family Doubles, formerly known as Dads and Lads, last Sunday.

Fourteen teams braved the icy conditions. And the defending champions nearly slipped up in the group stages.

Paul, 40, said: “Today was a bit strange to start off with. We lost the first two and didn’t think we’d get through.”

In fact, they lost to Coby and Dave Mumford who they would meet later in the final.

Eight-year-old Coby, using his dad’s cue because his wasn’t long enough, sunk the final black with the rest - a shot Paul described as “fantastic”.

And there were more cue problems for the youngster in their semi-final clash against Alex and James Walker. His tip flew off, which at least gave him the chance to wield dad’s cue again.

Meanwhile, Aaron and Paul scraped through against Mike and Martin Trigg in the second semi.

Aaron, 15, said: “That was a tough match.”

Despite Dave constructing a 42 break in the final, Aaron said: “I was still pretty confident because we had quite a lead before he made the 42. We weren’t that far behind.”

Paul added: “He is good. I said to Aaron before the game ‘we’ve got to be careful of Dave’. To meet them in the final was actually scary for me. I was more nervous than Aaron.”

Paul secured victory on the pink after a titanic battle on the brown with the scores locked at 49-49.

But both insisted their toughest final was against Suzie Opacic and her dad Steve in 2005, when Aaron was nine.
