DESPITE winning the Town Championship for the second time in three years, Mike Finn refuses to accept he is head and shoulders above the rest.
The 25-year-old, known as ‘The Mighty Finn’, insists he will “keep hanging on” but he reckons the chasing pack of hungry young players are already snapping at his heels. And he says it’s partly his fault!
Finn was speaking after a 4-1 success over last year’s Town Champion Nick Jennings in the 2011 final at Shirley Conservative Club.
“The standard’s so good now,” he said. “There’s five, six, seven players in Southampton that are really top amateurs.
“I’m probably paying for raising the standard a little bit a couple of years ago.
“They’re catching up with me very quickly and some of them have gone past me, but I’m going to keep hanging on,” he laughed.
“Getting results like that really makes me want to play again.”
Finn revealed he thought he had a chance of claiming the Frank Mintrum Cup again after knocking in two centuries in two days in the week leading up to the final.
On the Sunday, he made a 102 against Jordan Winbourne at a Cuestars tournament in Portsmouth and the next day he smacked in a 116 against Steve Cole in a Super League match.
He said: “I thought to myself ‘hello, we’ve got a chance here’.
“I knew I had to be good tonight. You don’t beat Nick not being good.
“It was good. I’m really pleased. There’s lots of people here and you don’t want to look an idiot. The conditions were hard and you have to adapt quickly.”
