Technological breakthrough in cribbage league

EVEN cribbage players now rely on mobile phones in the final weeks of the season.

Although texting may still be a few years away.

And whether Woolston Conservative Club’s cribbage team are ready for a Facebook page yet is perhaps one bridge too far.

Woolston Cons are desperate to dedicate the Division 2 championship to the three members of their ten-man squad who have died since the end of last season.

Team captain Alan Heads said the side kept going “with difficulty” after the loss of Reg Hislop, Ron Wesson and Phil Tudgay.

“Anyway, we got there,” he added. “We all soldiered on and said we’d see it to the end of the season.”

Alan did say he’s searching for an eighth player for next season.

Alan’s wife Hazel, a highly reluctant reserve, who, according to her husband, “would only play under dire emergencies”, was called into action after the final whistle had blow on Woolston Cons’ 6-3 home defeat by title-rivals Southampton (Old) Bowling Green.

Or at least her mobile was.

A call to Totton Conservative Club at 10.45pm revealed the league leaders had lost 7-2 in their final match to visitors Park Gate RBL.

This meant all three sides were on 30 points. Totton led on legs won. And Woolston and Old Bowl each had one match left.

Woolston, lying third by just one leg, won their final match 5-4 at Bitterne Park B – a result which was relayed through to me at 10.31pm on Wednesday via Sue Britten’s mobile.

Old Bowl meet Acorn Social B on Thursday in a must-win clash.

Woolston Cons team member and club president Derrick Britten said winning the championship for close friend Tudgay “would be a nice memorial”.
