LAST November I wrote protesting about a letter from someone trying to pin the blame on Eastleigh Borough council for all sorts of things which were not its responsibility (congestion on Fair Oak Road in Bishopstoke and a shortage of doctors’ surgeries).

I made it quite clear that justified criticism was perfectly acceptable, but people should not be allowed to blame local authorities for shortcomings which were not their remit.

I thought that would be the end of such letters.

I write now to protest at the letter (Letters, April 11) in which someone in West End is saying that if Eastleigh police station is closed it will all be Keith House’s fault!

Whatever next? Perhaps someone in Millbrook will write in to complain that her husband was walking home from the pub last night and got mugged, and it’s those damned Lib Dems running Eastleigh who are to blame and she holds Keith House personally responsible.

How about: “My cat’s just had kittens – and I blame the council!” Seriously, shouldn’t such letters be junked?

If the police station in Eastleigh is closed, you know as well as I do that it will have nothing to do with the local authority but will be a decision taken by the Police and Crime Commissioner.

No doubt he’ll seek the borough council’s views, but he won’t be bound by them.

While we’re about it, why do you continue to publish letters attacking the EU written by hysterics?

One last week talked about it being run by the Germans who, naturally (because they’re Germans) are planning total domination and they hope to succeed where Hitler failed.

Again, you know as well as I do that seats in the European Parliament are allotted according to population and the Germans don’t have enough seats to “run”

Europe on their own – even assuming that they wanted to.

Other correspondents who shout about how we defeated Hitler and now 50 years later Germany’s taking over ought to be reported to the local Mental Health Association and taken into protective custody so that they can receive treatment for paranoia.

Had he won, Hitler wasn’t going to run Europe as a democracy! What has the Third Reich got to do with the European Union?

We fought against the first (and defeated it). We joined the second of our own free will, as equal partners with all its other members.

Is it too much to hope that you could exercise your authority as Editor and put a stop to these absurd letters blaming bodies (not just EBC) for things they have nothing to do with, and anti-EU nutters who see Hitler in every directive that comes from Brussels?
