Having read of the fight of Fair Oak residents to keep their NatWest bank branch alive, I understand that Barclays is considering closing two branches in Southampton.

As both banks always seem to show a profit, it just means that another means of trading is on the cards. I would point out that if online banking is going to be forced on us, it must be remembered that a lot of elderly people do not have computers and some would not want one, and others like me who use a computer do not trust online banking for the obvious reason that smart alecs can hack into anything eventually.

Some people will be forced to use the post office, if there is one.

A lot of the elderly get their pensions from other sources, but the inconvenience is not justified.

Perhaps some wag will state that such actions abuses their human rights to a service that should be protected. But who is going to take on a bank?

Alan Blandford, Southampton.
