Seeing the darker side of cycling

First published in Readers' Letters

THERE are many letters printed in the Daily Echo extolling the virtues of cycling.

Tonight I was turning into St Catherine’s Road when at the last minute I spotted (it was 10pm) a cyclist, dark clothes, no lights.

I shouted to him that I had only just spotted him, it would have been his fault, yet as I understand it, the law says it was my fault as I am a motorist.

Earlier this week I have twice seen on busy Bitterne Road two cyclists talk on their mobile phones.

A motorist may have had a fine and points, etc. What penalty do cyclists get? Nothing, I assume.

From the sidelines says...

1. It is illegal to cycle at night without the correct lighting. Highway Code Rule 60 applies.
"At night your cycle MUST have white front and red rear lights lit. It MUST also be fitted with a red rear reflector (and amber pedal reflectors, if manufactured after 1/10/85)."

- You would therefore have had the basis for a claim, had a collision occurred.

2. It is not illegal to use a mobile phone whilst cycling. They are deemed to present little danger to others, unlike motorists.

- You should therefore mind your own business.

Seriously, all this is available free on line. Perhaps you could have taken the time to educate yourself, rather than try to start another flame-war. The Echo's editor usually manages to cite the facts in these matters, but perhaps he's on holiday at the moment, or he's trying to drive up the web traffic.

Its that time of the year again, everyone!

When people write in to complain about "invisible cyclists" they have seen. Very odd. Very, very odd.

And yes on the last paragraph - you are making an assumption.

OK in reference to the "What penalty do cyclists get? Nothing, I assume" comment at the end of the letter - 4 minutes quick search on Hants Police disclosure documents shows this last statement to be nonsense.

What Hants Police write on their 2012 disclosure is this:
"The total number of fixed penalties notices issued to cyclists in the last 6.5 years in Hampshire was 3770."

(Control+F to search "cyclists" will bring it up)

No good making assumptions - find the facts instead. This works out at approx 580 cyclists a year. Across ALL of Hampshire! Southampton alone has around 5-6000 riders right now. Even if they were all in this city this would still prove that technically infringements by riders are a minority.

Back of the fag packet maths - 1,337,700 people in Hampshire.
Percentage of Southampton residents who are cyclists 3%
3% of Hants population broadly equals about 40,131 regular cyclists.
580 = 1% of all riders.

I missed one the other night. Politely said that was close to him, his reply was a swearfest.

No wonder we are hated. I see many unlit cyclists in southampton, strange that the old bill don't.

I don't disagree they exist, but I do disagree that we should be hated because of a few morons.

I dont hate all people in trackies because of a couple of chavs.
I dont hate all dog walkers because of a few that let their animal defecate and leave it...

People need to learn to look at the bigger picture, stop seeing themselves as victims and put their energy into positive change... in all aspects of life.

I really dont know why they end up not disclosing their name? There is no real risk to them from having a letter printed. We're not going to go all cycling-jihad on them LMAO!

The only thing I can think of is that they dont want their reputation tarnished as they know that which they have written is nonsense.

I guess Jeffy has been here and gave you a good old thumbs down for being pro-2-wheels. You should feel proud.
