Candidate should be local

Candidate should be local

Candidate should be local

First published in Readers' Letters

ONCE again I find myself disagreeing with the views and sentiments of D R Smith and his hostile attitude to Royston Smith in his quest to become MP for Southampton East as opposed to Labour’s offering of Londoner Rowenna Davis.

Far from being a Conservative supporter myself it would nevertheless seem to me that any straight-thinking Southampton resident who may have met Royston Smith, as I have on many occasions, would deem him to be the obvious choice – a local person, born and bred in the city, rather than a person with roots in London – to be our link with Westminster.

So here we have a local Conservative councillor offering to hold referendums on significant issues prior to voting in parliamentary debates. What could be fairer than that?

L A O’BEE, Southampton.

Why should he need to hold a referendum at every tiff and turn?

If he were a competent person to hold that office, especially as he is 'born and bred' in the area, he should always 'have his finger on the city's pulse' and know, not only what his constituents think, but also what the city needs.

Also, what the hell is the point of holding these referendums if, as he has said, he would not necessarily accept the result?

Just another example of Royston Smith's willingness to waste money on a pointless exercise.

Me obsessed!

It is not me that thinks that he can do no wrong, and has the sun shining out of his rear oriface.

If you want to see someone who is obsessed with Royston Smith, take a long, lingering look in the mirror - and I do NOT mean the Daily Mirror!

I wonder if the "local" arguement holds any water with the candidate for Uxbridge ......
.
I would suggest that the Tories on this site may well turn a blind eye ... and a deaf ear ........ as gross hypocricy seems to come as second nature to them

Miss Davis is way better looking anyway.

Why should a local be in charge? Did the same people lose their minds when Pochettino took over at Saints? I bet they didn't.

It's irrelevant where someone is from, their appropriateness for the job is the most important thing. I'd rather have a Londoner turn the city into a thriving metropolis than a local keep it how it is.
