SO the MPs’ £28K rent allowance is insufficient, even in addition to the salary of £89,000 (Letters, September 1). Oh dear, how sad, it’s so tough at the top!

Perhaps they would like to change places with my stepfather, a 91-year-old Second World War veteran, injured in combat, who has worked, paid taxes (still does), paid National Insurance all his life, struggled to purchase a modest home and put a little aside for a rainy day. His rainy days have now come.

He is in a care home suffering from dementia, but, though working hard, being honest and thrifty, he now has to self-fund his care fees from his savings and then with the proceeds from the eventual sale of his home.

Although not one of the most expensive, every praise is given to the relevant care home for their care and compassion, but nevertheless, the first year’s fees for my stepfather have been in excess of £26,000 and this amount does not include any other necessary treatment such as chiropody, dentistry, haircuts or any personal toiletries.
