SOUTHAMPTON Cycling Campaign supports the principled stand Cllr David Harrison is taking on the matter of cycling in the New Forest.

Those opposing cycling in the Forest are either ill-informed or have little concern for the future of this national park.

Presumably Ms Fudge (letter, September 4) is content to see further degradation of the Forest environment that would occur with an increase in motor vehicles.

Maybe she is unaware that cyclists do not kill either people or ponies, and even a small change in the mode of transport from car to cycle would make the Forest a healthier and safer place.

Most of those cycling in the Forest, either as a means of transport or for leisure, are from Southampton, Bournemouth or the smaller urban areas between these two.

Most of them bring with them money which will be spent in local cafes, pubs and shops.

To say that ‘cyclists are not welcome in the Forest’ is as ludicrous as saying ‘drivers are not welcome in Southampton or Bournemouth’ and as damaging to the local economy.

Southampton Cycling Campaign would like to thank the Echo for its balanced reporting of the issues around cycling in the New Forest and the recent positive editorial.
