THE last-minute panic move by the three main political parties to offer Scotland more concessions in an attempt to secure a win for the Union in the yes/no referendum will cost all of us more in taxes.

Normally, I would have a problem with politicians not keeping their promises but, in this case, I hope that they can find a way out. Surely, they have had enough practice.

Unfortunately it looks like Gordon Brown, suddenly the new Golden Boy, will ensure that the promises are made to stick.

Are not free prescriptions, no university tuition fees and free personal care enough already, compared with what is not available to those who live in England?

If Cameron and co had not panicked but carried out their own polling and research, as they do during run-ups for general elections and by-elections, they would have known that there was never going to be a majority for the ‘yes’ campaign.

An analysis of the final results will show this and so well postulated by Lewis Baston in his piece in the Observer on September 21.

So come on Dave, Ed and Nick, wriggle your ways out of this in the same way that you have on many other of your promises in the past.
