I READ in the Echo on Tuesday, October 21, a letter stating that “people should think themselves lucky to be in receipt of a taxable total amount of cash in retirement, as not all British pensioners are blessed with such.”

I do take exception to this attitude as my husband and I, who worked long and hard to put money into a private pension, we were taxed on our total earnings and now we are taxed on money that we receive from it!

We aren’t “lucky”, we tried to plan for the future so that we could still enjoy some sort of civilized lifestyle in our retirement and not rely on Government hand-outs!
