THE poppy memorial in London was everything a tribute to those who have given so much should be. It evoked all the right instincts related to the sacrifice and horrors of warfare.

So hence yet again, I urge Southampton to cancel the proposed unrealistic glamorised tourist attraction, that is the model Spitfire warplane.

To me, rather than a respectful representation of the heroic actions of our forefathers, it is a jingoistic “Boys’ Own” representation of something supposedly exciting. It’s a wonder someone hasn’t suggested it should be converted into some sort of fairground ride with interactive graphics enabling the victorious pilot to shoot down his German enemy.

The Spitfire should be in the museum where people can choose to admire its undoubted qualities of finely engineered speed and firepower.

A real tribute and monument should be humble and profoundly understated. That is a better “advert” to the world as to our attitude towards war, and a sombre recognition of the gratitude we hold towards those who have suffered on our behalf.
