Over the past few years I’ve heard people complain that millions of pounds are wasted each year on cycling in Southampton, claiming that the cycling facilities are good enough.
However, those who say such things are completely wrong.
After an FOI request to Southampton City Council (it’s paid for out of council tax), I have been shocked to find that less than £2,000,000 has been spent on cycling between January 2012 and October this year.
That’s a yearly spend of only £699,861, which is less than £3 spent on every person towards cycling, for the whole year, so why is the yearly cycling budget less than a councillor’s wages and expenses claim?
