IN 2009 and 2012 I sustained a fractured left wrist, broken left wrist and head injury respectively due to tripping on the broken, uneven pavement surfaces in Shirley.

I wrote to you expressing the view that Southampton City Council should address the problem, etc, and you kindly published my concerns. I regret to say I haven’t noticed any improvements, the danger remains.

However, another danger is very much in evidence, ie cyclists on pavements.

On January 14 at 5.15pm, while making my way home via Shirley High Street, I was knocked flat onto my back on the pavement by a cyclist who came from behind and slammed into me.

Unfortunately it was my left arm which once again took the brunt of the initial impact. Two ladies ran to my aid and I am very grateful indeed for their kindness.

The cyclist, a young man, expressed his deep and sincere apologies and offered what assistance he could.

I told him how dangerous his actions are and he must never, ever cycle on the pavement. He then told me he’d had a problem with a bus while on the road which made him nervous.

However, what I would say to cyclists is this: if you consider that certain areas are dangerous for you, why on earth don’t you just dismount and push your bike on the pavement instead of breaking the law (and bones) in the process!

I am in my 80s and feel that this time it was third-time lucky – severe bruising, badly shaken up etc etc, but quite honestly all I’d like is a quiet, safe life!
